I’ve wondered for a few years why so many children in US are homeschooled. Can only assume events like this are a big reason.
Hasn’t it been documented that when questioned later killers have said they’d not have sought another weapon if a gun hadn’t been to hand. Yet no one will ban guns.
Those poor families tonight.

You'd think that might be the case, but actually it's not. The homeschool crowd in the US are far more likely to be doing it because of religious and/or "muh freedom" beliefs than due to fear of guns. Many of them think schools are socialist doctrine centres.

CurlyCew · 24/05/2022 22:59

Individual Americans are for the most part charming, welcoming and very hospitable. Unfortunately when groups come together for a cause, be it Evangelical Christianity of the madder kind, Anti Abortionists, Pro gun law upholders and so on, the collective can be very unsavoury.

When Trump got elected I said I wouldn't visit that country again, and I haven't and won't, because I have no need to and refuse to support its economy with my tourist dollar.

The poor little innocent mites and their teacher. There is no reason any sane person or group could justify this via the right to bear arms. But therein lies the madness of America.

Artichokeleaves · 24/05/2022 23:00

Cannot imagine sending your young child off to school this morning and this afternoon waiting to hear if your child is one of the injured or the dead, those poor children and those poor families. This should not be possible, and absolutely yes the rush to control women's bodies on the grounds of precious unborn lives - it's all demonstrated as rank hypocrisy when there's no worry at all about what happens to healthy, growing kids who die at school because disturbed teenagers have easy access to guns. Every kid and family in that school will be traumatised by today for the rest of their lives.

We've holidayed in the US twice and my husband has travelled there a few times for work. I will never go back.

The last few years have been an eye opener. The US is backward and stuck in a morally bankrupt void, which is ironic considering it's self confessed emphasis on Christian ideology. I say that as a Christian.

Georgeskitchen · 24/05/2022 22:13

It seems their right to bear arms takes priority over the rights of children not to be murdered in school.
I have visited The States a couple of times and generally find the Americans very friendly people, but it's so weird and scary going into Walmart and seeing guns on display for sale 😳😳

Or being behind someone in a queue and seeing a gun in their belt!
Things will never change, too many are willing to consider this event, and all the others, as acceptable collateral damage to allow them their interpretation of the archaic Constitution. Maybe it should apply to the arms of the 18th Century or more sensibly to restrict it to certain classes of weapon, at the moment they can carry more fire power than a small nation's army.

SpaghettiSquash · 24/05/2022 23:03

Fucking Americans and their fucking guns. I used to live there and couldn't get over how seemingly nice, like minded people would carry guns.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 24/05/2022 23:06

In six months it will be the 10-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting and since that day US Congress has not passed a single piece of gun control legislation.

I guess all of those thoughts and prayers didn't work.

JanisMoplin · 24/05/2022 23:06

My sister lives in Texas with her family. She is an Asian woman so likely more at risk too. She has built her life there and can't easily leave. We spend hours pointlessly cursing the NRA and the rotten system.

I worry for her and her family every day.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 24/05/2022 23:07

RIP to all the victims of this latest tragedy - which sadly won’t be the last

Delectable · 24/05/2022 23:11

Remember they're so pro-life they ban abortion. Lowest provision of welfare assistance in comparisons to other developed countries. No free healthcare, 1 month now 3 month maternity. Mind boggles.

Beebatron · 24/05/2022 23:11

I can't stop crying. Those poor children and their poor parents and families. DH and I had a pending visa application to the US when Sandy Hook happened. We'd have been moving twenty minutes away. I wad so relieved when the visa got denied. I don't know how parents can send their children off to school every day without being terrified. Something surely just has to be done.

Cyw2018 · 24/05/2022 23:11

I always think if we didn't have a shared language and a distant shared history that has given rise to our 'special relationship' with America we would all look on it as the barbaric inhumane nation that it is, in the same way that we judge Saudi Arabia and other such countries.

Porcupineintherough · 24/05/2022 23:15

Only fetuses have a "right to life" in Texas it seems. Children not so much. Sad

A pp is right. It's increasingly hard to care (beyond sorrow for the victims) as the country chooses this, and chooses it again. The parents of those children likely support the gun laws.

Sagealicious · 24/05/2022 23:15

I hate saying this but if the United States didn't learn something from Sandy Hook then it's highly unlikely they'll learn anything from this. The cult of American gun ownership is so entrenched in their society that dead children are a minor inconvenience to them. They'll give their thoughts and prayers and then in the same sentence say they need more guns but only for the "good people".

Cartoonmom · 24/05/2022 23:16

This is so heartbreaking. I can't stand living in this country anymore. Can't go to school in peace, can't go shopping in peace, can't go worship in peace. It truly is a failed state. Nothing will change because "lobbying" is just a legalized form of corruption and the senate and electoral college make it possible for federal policy to be controlled by politicians that don't represent the interests of a majority of Americans.

Theluggage15 · 24/05/2022 23:18

It’s so tragic for the families but the country just seems to love guns more than life. If this had happened in another country I’d be so shocked but mass shootings just seem routine in America.

stanfi · 24/05/2022 23:20

Dunblane lead to changes in UK law.
America has had this tragedy happen so many times and nothing changes.
I cry for the families and despair for those that will experience this again and again and again.

Namechanger965 · 24/05/2022 23:24

’Gun deaths are now the leading cause of death for US children and teenagers, overtaking car crashes, according to research released in April.

In 2020 - the last year for which complete figures are available - 4,300 young Americans died of firearms-related injuries.’

The leading cause of death in children and teenagers and still they don’t ban guns.

I've just seen that the Texas Attorney General has suggested arming teachers.

So basically solving the problem of guns... With more guns.

CJsGoldfish · 24/05/2022 23:27

Anytime anything like this has happened in other countries, it's been "How can we ensure this never happens again?" In the US, it's 'thoughts and prayers' with a side of 'this is acceptable collateral damage for our right to bear arms'.
Won't change. Ingrained. They simply do not care until it is a loved one of theirs and, even then, those voices are simply drowned out by the $$ of the gun lobby

0pheIiaBalls · 24/05/2022 23:28

DD is a teacher. The idea of her owning a gun, and potentially having to use it to kill someone shooting the children in her class, is beyond comprehension.

What the fuck, America. What the fuck.

Spanglybangles · 24/05/2022 23:29

I am so sad tonight after seeing the news of this latest mass shooting. I love America, it’s a beautiful country, like loads of different countries in one and have I have spent amazing times there.

However I also have family in Houston Texas with 3 young who go to school there and my heart just stopped when I saw the headline tonight. I frantically checked for the location then breathed a sigh of relief for my family members whilst feeling heartbroken for all of those affected by this tragedy.

Something just HAS to change, but sadly I fear it just won’t. The NRA are just too powerful and the right to bear arms too ingrained in US society. Meanwhile, we worry about our family and pray for their continued safety.

What a genius idea.

I actually despair :( that country is completely broken

ChocolatemilkBertie · 24/05/2022 23:30

The irony of America.
They have the right to bare arms.
The people who fight the hardest to maintain this right are often the ones fighting to ban all abortion, birth control as they are pro life.
however the same people also believe universal health care is of the devil, healthcare is not a right for everyone, and would rather children get shot then give up their gun. But of course they’re pro life.
Welfare money is also evil, but guns are great for everybody!

Doing everything to get babies born but don’t give a damn once they’re here.
The logic is painful.
I know not all Americans are in this category too before I get pounced on.

This is disgusting, Those poor children and teachers.

Penguintears · 24/05/2022 23:31

BBC is reporting that the Governor of Texas says the answer is to arm teachers 🙄
