Would you be happy to receive this as a gift?

A family portrait illustration similar to the one pictured?

Considering them for Christmas presents (I know I'm early!) but DH thinks people would rather have a realistic portrait or canvas photo.

I love it. I would commission it for my own family. I would be wary of asking for it as a gift as I would want control over the image used to create it from (I don’t like many photos of myself). I’m not sure I’d commission it for others - again due to choosing images that others are happy with.

Erm - PPs - it’s the OP who is designing these… as gifts.. featuring the recipient’s family (in theory)…
Right, OP?

Exactly!

Simple reading comprehension people. Come on!

I have a rule to only give perishable/edible/drinkable gifts now.

I wouldn’t want to impose my taste on someone else’s home and I would hate to have someone impose theirs on mine. I’ve had lots of shockers over the years from people I thought knew me well and it makes me sad to see them go to waste.

A dear relative is an ‘artist’ and I have been given a couple of their paintings. I hate the pieces. I can’t even bring myself to display this dear person’s art so if I got a pic like you posted it would sadly go in the bin as it can’t even be donated.

sorry if that seems blunt and rude, I just think it’s best to leave people to choose their own home decor otherwise it can be embarrassing and wasteful.

If you're giving a family portrait I think that's a nice way of doing it, but I can see that it wouldn't necessarily be universally welcome. As these things go I'd say it was on the more tweee side of the spectrum and some people aren't in to that. There may be other styles available that would suit who you're giving it to better. You need to look at the style of the people you're giving it to and make a judgment based on their taste, not yours.

icelollycraving · 18/05/2022 19:03

Not my taste at all. I’d feel duty bound to have it on display somewhere though. If it was v small I could cope with but if it was a large canvas I’d actually be a bit irritated.

Doingmybest12 · 18/05/2022 19:06

I think it is quite sweet and if on a card to display for a while and put away or choose to frame it and leave it out on a shelf I might like it. But I wouldn't want a picture sized version to find wall space for as it is a bit too cutsy for that.

Happylittlethoughts · 18/05/2022 19:06

I immediately thought of Oxford Reading Tree illustrations.

Looks like a Reading book page to me ... just missing Biffy n Chip.
Sorry ..maybe cos I'm a teacher

saraclara · 18/05/2022 19:07

My sister, brother and father would rather chew broken glass than have something like this.

They sound like my sort of people!

Bimblybomeyelash · 18/05/2022 19:07

its absolutely the sort of thing that would sell. I think I may look for something similar for my I laws for Christmas, as it’s their kind of style.

TomatoorChips · 18/05/2022 19:16

Looks like an image cut from an Oxford Reading Tree Book.

Ha Ha - didnt see the same said above

bananaboats · 18/05/2022 19:38

Not my taste at all and I wouldn't display it. Id only buy something like that for someone if I was sure it was their kind of style.

Cherrysoup · 18/05/2022 20:12

Really subjective, I wouldn’t risk it.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 18/05/2022 20:16

Depends on the style of their home. There's a lot of people selling this sort of thing now, some better than others!
It's too twee for me but I know some family members would think it's ok.
Are you buying them or are you the artist?

steff13 · 18/05/2022 20:29

If the person who gave it to me had drawn it, yes. I have a painting my brother did for me for Christmas that is my favorite thing. But purchased from another artist, not really.

trailrunner85 · 18/05/2022 20:34

Oh god no. If someone bought this for me I'd think they didn't know me at all. And I'd then feel pressured into displaying it even though I hate it.
It's so twee and a bit cheesy - if the people you're buying it for are into Cath Kidston prints, vases of twigs, inspirational quotes and the like, then they might go for it? But only risk it if you know them reasonably well enough to think they'll like it..

TheWayoftheLeaf · 18/05/2022 21:44

Yes it's sweet

KyaClark · 19/05/2022 05:27

Personally, I'd hate it but I'm sure lots of people wouldn't.

The larger chap looks just like my brother.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/05/2022 05:58

Personally no, I'm not a fan of things like that, I don't even have photos of people in my house.

Sweetener12 · 19/05/2022 10:01

I would love getting it! I enjoy all kind of arts, like drawing or digital art, so thiswould be a hit in my house for sure. That being said, it all depends on people and some would really prefer a more realistic portrait or even a photo book of old family pictures that are restored and colorized. If you think people you are preparing this gift for are more like this, then maybe check out lists of photo restoration software and apps ( www.ephotozine.com/article/a-roundup-of-photo-restoration-software-and-apps-available-in-2022-36017 ) or photo to painting services ( www.snappycanvas.com/6-photo-to-painting ).

FearMe · 19/05/2022 17:53

I would not like to receive this and it would go straight in a cupboard. I couldn't even pass it on to a charity shop or regift it so I would be quite irritated by receiving it! 😁

Mrssheppard18 · 19/05/2022 18:03

They’re lovely!

glamourousindierockandroll · 19/05/2022 18:20

It wouldn't be to my taste but my sister would love that sort of thing. Depends on the person and how well you know them.

clumperoo · 19/05/2022 18:32

Depends who gave it to me and who is in the pic

I wouldn’t want a photo of us with PIL or SIL but maybe my side of family would be ok 🤣

or perhaps just me DH and kids would be ok

Jack80 · 19/05/2022 18:32

I love them do you make them?
