Would you be happy to receive this as a gift?

A family portrait illustration similar to the one pictured?

Considering them for Christmas presents (I know I'm early!) but DH thinks people would rather have a realistic portrait or canvas photo.

Chikapu · 18/05/2022 16:55

Personally I'd hate it, it looks tacky and badly done.

C152 · 18/05/2022 16:56

I would hate this, sorry. Art is so subjective, it's hard to strike the right tone with a gift unless someone shows you a particular work and says they'd love to have it hanging in their living room. If you're not absolutely certain the person you're buying it for would love it as much as you, choose a different present and buy the illustration for yourself.

SoManyTshirts · 18/05/2022 16:56

No, I’d hate it so much I’d either pass it on to somebody else in the picture - perhaps a child? - or destroy it. I’d display a group photo though.

Mm feeling maybe mn isn't for me after this thread... Lots of talk about 'art'. Am thinking grabbing a cheap canvas pic from Home Bargains isn't what is meant here!!

Moonface123 · 18/05/2022 16:59

No, not for me. l don' t have any photos around the house, just not my thing, but as with everything its each to their own.

Wexone · 18/05/2022 17:02

Apologies i don't like it. I love Art and to me that this is not well don, it looks like a generic computer generated pic of a picture you sent it. I would rather spend more money on an artist that can do a better more realistic job

CounterTop · 18/05/2022 17:03

@Triffid1, I think I might be your sister!

Sorry OP, but I’m another one in the “no” camp. It’s twee and I dislike the style of the drawing- all of the people’s faces look exactly alike. It’s a little creepy.

But anyone who knows me well knows I’d not like a gift like that and presumably you know your audience and how it would go down?

thevanilla · 18/05/2022 17:04

It’s not to my taste but I’m sure lots of people would like it

Antarcticant · 18/05/2022 17:07

Yes, I like it.

hanahsaunt · 18/05/2022 17:11

Artworks for homes are deeply personal. I would hate it. DSIL would love it. I wouldn't buy it for anyone in case they thought I liked it and reciprocated.

VeryTrying22 · 18/05/2022 17:11

I wouldn’t no, I’d categorise it as tat people who don’t know me well enough would buy. Wouldn’t stick it on the wall or anywhere on display so would be a bit pointless.

IamNannyPlum · 18/05/2022 17:17

I would hate it. It’s actually really poorly drawn and £50! 😯

Qwill · 18/05/2022 17:19

No, definitely not. Art works are very personal items, and it puts pressure on the recipient to have it up in their home (or remember to get it out when you come over!).

Blue4YOU · 18/05/2022 17:23

Erm - PPs - it’s the OP who is designing these… as gifts.. featuring the recipient’s family (in theory)…
Right, OP?

Maireas · 18/05/2022 17:26

Is this your new business?
Bit of a mixed reception on here. Not to my taste.

Lesperance · 18/05/2022 17:35

I personally find that sort of thing cringeworthy, but I am sure some people would like it very much. A gift for somebody who you really know really well to know it would be to their taste.

reesewithoutaspoon · 18/05/2022 17:39

No I wouldnt like it and I wouldn't buy anything decorative for someones house unless I was 100% sure it was to their taste. I dislike receiving ornaments or pictures that don't go with the kind of stuff I want to display. Everyones tastes are so different and I wouldn't want to feel obligated to put something up on my wall that I didn't like so as not to offend the buyer.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 18/05/2022 17:42

Ooo for £50 definitely not. Maybe worth the risk for £20 but I would be upset if someone spent £50 on a picture like that for me.

The photo won't go big enough for me to actually see it properly on my phone so I can't tell how big it would be or if it is hand painted so that might shape my view on the price.

MajesticElephant · 18/05/2022 17:48

I would only want this if the giver is the person who drew it. I don’t value computer generated animated prints.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/05/2022 17:49

Awful Imo. Just hate the animation.

SpeedofaSloth · 18/05/2022 17:50

No, not for me, thank you.

NamelessNancy · 18/05/2022 17:51

It's nice enough but I'd never give anyone art as a gift. It's absolutely not my place to decide what anyone else displays in their house. My mil enjoys painting and likes to present us with her portraits (of us) as gifts. It's so awkward as we feel under pressure to display but they are really not to our taste. I actually think it borders upon rude to give people gifts they will feel an expectation to put up in their homes. As a commission for your own home, great, go for it!

Scout2016 · 18/05/2022 17:51

Not mad keen to be honest. I'd want to see the photos it was based on too so I could judge whether it actually looked anything like them or not. A lot of these type portraits miss the mark I think. But I wouldn't want a realistic portrait or canvas either.

FloraGreysteel · 18/05/2022 17:56

Better than a family photograph but I wouldn't display it. I like to choose what I put on my walls.

Also, are you thinking of just doing one and then reproducing it, in which case the recipients would receive a colour copy? Or will each picture be individually made? And if people don't want to display them is it going to get awkward? If I were you, I wouldn't offer it as a gift, but offer it as a greetings card.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 18/05/2022 17:58

No I wouldn’t want to receive it and I would not display it if I received it.
