A family portrait illustration similar to the one pictured?

Considering them for Christmas presents (I know I'm early!) but DH thinks people would rather have a realistic portrait or canvas photo.

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 19/05/2022 18:34

Sorry, no. It's not my thing.

Riv · 19/05/2022 18:37

I wouldn’t like it at a, but then, I wouldn’t want a photograph of family as a Christmas gift either. I like them in or on cards small ones I can put in an album. The others go in a drawer for a year then in the bin.

PinkWisteria · 19/05/2022 19:09

Not for me, but to be honest I wouldn't want a realistic portrait or canvas photo either.

Only acceptable if they all autograph it.

(One of them might by famous one day.)

PinkSyCo · 19/05/2022 19:26

I would love it!

NeedSomeHeadspace · 19/05/2022 19:52

I think this is lovely - I’d take it as a huge compliment if someone took time to sort this out as a gift for me.

Greycatclub · 19/05/2022 20:28

No - I think it’s a bit marmite.

linsey2581 · 19/05/2022 20:32

Oh god those things are awful. I would rather stick pins in my eyes. Not my cup of tea a bit cringy.

puppetcat · 19/05/2022 20:38

personally not, it's a bit twee for my taste but I can see others loving it.

CelestiaNoctis · 19/05/2022 20:47

I'd rather have the £50 so my family could go for a day out or a meal.

VenusClapTrap · 19/05/2022 22:05

Not my cuppa tea. The best man at our wedding gave us a painting he’d done of Dh and I, as a wedding present. Andy Warhol style. I really didn’t like it, but Dh did, so the bloody thing ended up hung in our dining room for years. When we moved house, something happened to it and it was never seen again. Shame.

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 19/05/2022 22:19

Art is so personal, and not only that bit having the space to display it! We've been given art for our new house that just isnt our style and it's hard to say anything without offending, but we spent so long saving for this house that I really dont want stuff on the walls that isnt our style, we had years of that in rented houses, so itll go somewhere for a while then get moved/donated

User3568975431146 · 19/05/2022 22:23

Oh no!!!!

Someone gave me a canvas of my kids for a birthday once and it ended up being turned upside down and duck taped onto a table to extend a computer desk by one of my kids, it worked like a charm too.

I can't think of a worse gift in the world than a family portrait!!!! 🤢

Shinyandnew1 · 19/05/2022 22:40

No, I wouldn’t. If there was a picture of my family I loved and wanted it up on my wall, chances are it would already be up.

My MIL buys me shite she likes and thinks I should want on display in my house-I hate it! I’d much rather have any number of things as a gift, which she would probably know if she bothered to pay any attention to the things I liked rather than assuming that she knows best.

Ginburee · 19/05/2022 22:58

Absolutely no from me.
No apologies, just a no. Xx

Agadoodoododont · 19/05/2022 23:12

I really would hate a picture ( however cartoony) of myself. I avoid looking in mirrors as much as possible. But a picture of my dog……..

Pepsi2001 · 20/05/2022 08:13

Sorry I would not like this as a gift.

mjf981 · 20/05/2022 08:43

If I was Amish and living in rural Pennsylvania...maybe. Otherwise no. Sorry OP!

Jacopone · 20/05/2022 17:12

I have to add to this thread even if it doesn’t change anything. I think the reception of such gift would depend on the ages, background of the people. It felt sad to read so many negative opinions. I really feel sorry for OP and think many replies were rather ungenerous.
As a middle age woman with an art degree I can say I would love such gift. The. picture is sweet, in a not trying too hard loose inofensive style. Comparing it unfavourably to receiving £50 for Christmas is just unfair and crude. . I would love it on my bookshelf.

Runnerduck34 · 20/05/2022 18:12

Well I like it! It's not that big so could easily be displayed somewhere, hall, landing, cloakroom etc
Art is a personal thing but if they have similar taste to you then it should be fine, I actually think it's a thoughtful gift, clearly you would have put time and effort into arranging it.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 20/05/2022 18:55

I absolutely love it! Really want one like that, it's cute

CurleyMango · 20/05/2022 21:35

Er no thanks, not my cup of tea and would find it awful

BellePeppa · 23/05/2022 10:56

Hardly seemed any point in asking people’s opinions when some hate the idea and some love it. Best to just make a decision based on your own personal knowledge of the would-be recipients. (Personally I would like it).

NotTheMrMenAgain · 23/05/2022 11:40

I don’t like it at all and would be slightly horrified by the however well-meaning expectation that I would be happy to have it hanging it on my wall. But it’s personal taste, isn’t it. If you know the intended recipients well enough to know that they’d really like it and want it on display in their home, then great. If you’re not certain they’d love it, just don’t waste your money and put them in the awkward position of feeling like they have to feign enthusiasm for something which isn’t their taste.
