A family portrait illustration similar to the one pictured?

Considering them for Christmas presents (I know I'm early!) but DH thinks people would rather have a realistic portrait or canvas photo.

You’d need to know the person to make that decision. If they’re the kind of family that have loads of pictures of each other up then they’d probably like it. If they don’t, they won’t.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 18/05/2022 15:56

I think I like it - but the picture is a bit too small to see properly.
From a squint it looks a bit like the illustrations in the Biff, Chip and Kipper books, (so might give me flashbacks/nightmares about teaching my son to read!)

Rosehugger · 18/05/2022 16:01

I'd rather just have the nice photo up.

I do wonder how many of these "artists" have actually just run the photograph through some computer software also. I know some people can paint something to the detail of a photograph but there are just so many of these services available it does make you wonder.

Try some software and run it through yourself (even my phone does it to a reasonable quality), put it in a frame and save yourself ££.

I zoomed in - it's very cartoony and all the faces look the same. Biff and Chip is a good call!

Zoutdropje · 18/05/2022 16:03

I quite like it but art is very personal. I think you would really need to be sure that the recipient appreciates the style. Can you ask in advance.

My DD does portrait commissions but they tend to be realistic drawings or paintings. Generally it’s of the commissioner or they and a partner or someone who has died or even a pet.

Some people would hate it.

Alternatively give a gift voucher/Etsy voucher so the recipient can decide what exactly they want? But I guess that defeats the purpose.

CMOTDibbler · 18/05/2022 16:03

I really wouldn't want one. Nor a canvas or photo thanks

Blowyourowntrumpet · 18/05/2022 16:04

I think it's dreadful. I'd probably put it in the bin, but others may like it

Pbbananabagel · 18/05/2022 16:07

Love it way more than a canvas

EspeciallyDistracted · 18/05/2022 16:08

I don't like it at all, sorry. I don't like canvases either and would only want a photo if it was very small, eg 7x5" to go on a bookcase or similar.

viques · 18/05/2022 16:09

Another thought : you wouldn’t even be able to pass that on to a charity shop, so a complete waste of money and resources.

Hereforthedramaz · 18/05/2022 16:10

The style is nice but tbh, assuming you are giving it to people outside those in the portrait, I would absolutely not want to display or keep a portrait ( or photo particularly) of another family.

Seems a tad self absorbed!

I do feel similar about photos being given as presents but at least I can just put the in a photos box and I might look at them one day.

rodham · 18/05/2022 16:11

Personally I don't like it, Biff and Chip style is spot on! I'd feel awkward that I didn't want to display it and would hope the giver never noticed.

I would hate it. I like to choose my own home decorations, paintings, artwork etc.

I don't like modern portraits, paintings, photographs up in my home. But if I did have some up they'd be of me and DP, not random other families.

You do understand that the hypothetical portrait would be of your family, the one in the OP is an example. It's tickled me that you appear (unless I've misread/misunderstood you it has been a long day so entirely possible) to think the OP would be handing out portraits of some random family to her loved ones 😂

BellePeppa · 18/05/2022 16:14

I like it. I have a friend who has one similar on their wall and I have commented to her how much I like it. A great present I think!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 18/05/2022 16:14

I'd like it if it was of my cats, but no, not people.

lurchermummy · 18/05/2022 16:15

Not for me sorry

ElenaSt · 18/05/2022 16:16

Not my thing but would be a nice idea for families to have made into greeting/Christmas cards to send to long distance relatives etc

Have I totally misunderstood the OP?

Surely the actual gift would be a portrait of the family receiving it, not the person giving it?

Bloodybridget · 18/05/2022 16:17

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but do you mean a picture of you and your family that you would give as a present to someone else, or a picture of another family that you would give to them?
If the first, I wouldn't want it as a present at all, and can't imagine who would.
If the second, I guess some people might like it, but would v much depend on their taste; personally I don't like the picture you posted at all.

Intrigueddotcom · 18/05/2022 16:18

100% yes

Crikey are some people not realising the picture would be of their specific family. 😳

Lulu1919 · 18/05/2022 16:19

Love it

Doggydarling · 18/05/2022 16:21

No. Not my style. Looks like it goes alongside Laugh,Love, Live or whatever those signs say.

RosieRoww · 18/05/2022 16:22

No, sorry but this is very cartoony.

picklemewalnuts · 18/05/2022 16:25

I like it! What's the price point?
