Well, we are still going! And still learning about subjects new and old!

As before, only rule is no spoilers!

I don't know if it's more american or if I'm just old.

If you read the first sentence of the piece you'd know! GrinI'd never actually realised there was any difference in usage, just two words used more or less interchangeably except in the phrase 'valence bond theory' where only that form works.

Somebody said yesterday that valence was used by proper chemists and valency was more likely to be learned at GCSE. Given that I am too old to have done GCSEs, I thought maybe modern industry usage had picked up the American as standard.

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 150 guesses with an accuracy of 18.00%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Well I got there eventually. This is probably a topic I hate more than any so I'm not surprised it took a while!

GuppytheCat · 30/05/2022 18:04

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 76 guesses with an accuracy of 47.37%. Played at www.redactle.com/

should have got this one earlier but I headed down a very wrong track!

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 31 guesses with an accuracy of 32.26%.
went off at a tangent, should have got this much sooner!

For once something i know about... my best score.

dapsnotplimsolls · 30/05/2022 18:27

Absolute stinkers yesterday and today!

Fifthtimelucky · 30/05/2022 18:41

@Etinoxaurus, this is how I got yesterday's in two:

I noticed that there were a few examples of words using subscript in the middle and end of words which I guessed were chemical formulae, so my first guess was chemistry. Then I guessed valence based on the description in the opening paragraph.

Given what it says about valence being the American version and valency being the UK version, I'm surprised I got the right spelling.
I haven't done any chemistry since my O level in 1977 so it's not exactly my specialist subject. All credit to my old chemistry teacher, Doc Taylor!

Now off to try today's.

AuntieStella · 30/05/2022 18:45

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 139 guesses with an accuracy of 31.65%. Played at www.redactle.com/

It took a while to get going (my usual starter words not featuring at all!) but once I did it was pretty straightforward

VivienneDelacroix · 30/05/2022 18:47

I gave up yesterday. I got it in 145 by Googling, but didn't post as if I Google I don't count my score. I was never ever going to get that.
First time I've quit /had to Google. Gutted.

Today's is totally confusing me to. But I'll persevere.

That's impressive - my chemistry O level is of the same vintage but I've a couple of degrees and >35 years working in the field! I was sufficiently sure of 'chemistry' from that typography not to enter the word. Then the second para looked like a series of things with different numbers but there were no + or - signs which ruled out some other possibilities.

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 124 guesses with an accuracy of 37.10%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Googled at the end after getting most of the words but not able to remember the specific name!

Good God I think Redactle hates me.

I got to 152 be before I had any idea then had to Google (I knew what the answer was, just not the word) as i have no memory of this subject!
Please can tomorrow be less frustrating!

VivienneDelacroix · 30/05/2022 19:18

Did it in 82 today, but on work laptop so can't copy my score over and cba to type all 82 words out on my phone! Really not my area.

Made heavy work of that one - took me ages to get anywhere near. And it was something I really should have got much faster given it was sort of my field!

Back in the room, I was very busy last week and couldn't get into it.

I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 117 guesses with an accuracy of 29.91%. Played at www.redactle.com/

that was a bit better than yesterday’s fiasco, I gave up after trying goodness knows how many different spellings/variations around the word.

although I’m now an expert in chemical bonding types🤦🏼‍♀️

Fifthtimelucky · 30/05/2022 20:14

Today's has brought me back to earth after my success of yesterday.

I'm giving up at 187. I know what sort of area it is, and I think I've guessed just about every relevant word I can think of. Clearly I don't know enough relevant words!

BestIsWest · 30/05/2022 20:28

Got the area almost straight away so it was a bit of guessing then.
I solved today's Redactle (#54) in 29 guesses with an accuracy of 41.38%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Lougle · 30/05/2022 20:43

Only by googling a phrase that I uncovered.

WheelofLife · 30/05/2022 21:32

I gave up and googled at 145. I would never have got this and had to google yesterdays too. I hate that. :(

GrouchyKiwi · 30/05/2022 21:37

Needed DH to help me again. Knew thing it was, not specific.
