Cyber attacks are happening all the time, my friend came round last night and told me about his girlfriend's family who live in Eastern Finland, not far from the border. GPS pretty much does not work at all there now, its constantly being messed with. My bank has been hit twice, defence ministry website was hit, all just a lot of little annoying stuff (though the GPS thing is more than just a little annoying I imagine, I was relying on GPS last night and it cut out due to no phone signal and it was bad enough for that one time, so all the time must be quite annoying).
What's more of a worry is something similar to the Belarus border immigrant thing, pushing immigrants over to overwhelm and destabilise our services. That would not be good.

Igotjelly · 15/05/2022 19:44

Tbf cyber attacks aren’t a new thing. In my line of work we get a weekly update relating to ongoing issues that effect the country (anything from cyber issues to buses not running on time) and cyber attacks of varying severity crop up fairly frequently.

The dog of the guy who walked to safety is looking worse for wear.
I'm sure if the Guardian crowd funded for him he'd soon have enough to go to a vet and the balance could be donated to the Ukrainian cause.

I saw she is nine. She must be very tired and it says her paws are in a bad way. I wondered if you have written to the Guardian by any chance Desdamona? Even without a crowd fund it would be good if their contact there in Zaporizhia could be handed on some cash to pass on to the man. I suppose they can’t generally get involved.

We all know that Russia is the greatest supplier of tanks to UA.
Also they are killing off wounded.

1: The guys are telling us how their own wounded men would get finished off
🇺🇦: what do you mean “finished off”?
1: just like that, a wounded soldier is laying there and the commander of the battalion just shoots him with the gun and that’s all.
1: young guy, wounded laying on the ground. Commander asks him “can you walk?” No? He just took out his gun and shot him.
2: not even just one. the important part is it wasn’t just one. The commander shot 4-5 people this way. young guys…
3: they could have been saved, transported somewhere, receive some help, but he simply just killed them
🇺🇦: and why did he do this?
3: I don’t know.

Natsku · 15/05/2022 19:57

Bloody hell, hope word of that gets around Russia, discourage young men from joining up.

EdithStourton · 15/05/2022 20:11

The Russian state has form for behaving horrendously towards its own population, ethnic Russians included. Back in the days of the Gulag, districts would pretty much get given a number of people to arrest and send off for slave labour. Russian troops who had been taken POW by the Nazis were routinely sent to the Gulag when they returned to Russia.

Many. many Ukrainians (and Balts, and Poles and etc...) ended up in the Gulag, They won't have forgotten.

I was reading replies. Someone posted that there is a tradition in the Russian army of ‘mercy’ killings, which I can understand. This sounds simply perfunctory and absolutely dreadful though. Not being able to walk could be an easily cured leg wound for instance.

Meanwhile in Kherson, there isn't any shelling but the Russian troops are just as ruthless. I've received the following...

The military is constantly driving around the city with machine guns on "tigers", blood appears on the roads, people are kidnapped, a dead man is floating on the river and no one cares. Explosions are not far away several times a day. And this is a small part of that what we are going through.

If anyone knows how to escape such a place and survive filtration please PM me.

Did you mean this? I got it from PestonPeston’s post I thought. See if this works. I found the bit about the tradition of ‘mercy’ killings following through replies but wouldn’t be able to link that I don’t think.

That poor wretched soldier. It is surprising that he has no handcuffs or anything as a POW and someone is filming him.

Someone in the replies posted a translation which I have copied and pasted below.. It mentions in the link (but has not come out in what I pasted) that the soldier asked the filmer if he could turn the loud speaker off as the echo (?) made it difficult for him the hear.

It seems this is from about 1 March.

A captured Russian occupier tells of atrocities in the Russian Army - officers kill their wounded soldiers, leave the dead on the battlefield, do not inform relatives. : r/ukraine

Translation:

POW: "They sent us there to die. Everyone. Everyone died.

POW: "Well, thats how things are. While I am still alive there may be a way to exchange me for another POW". You can help make it happen if people over there start trying. You know, you can write a letter, go to the head (of the base), maybe they can arrange an exchange"

POW: Thats the shit thats happening

POW: Ok say it again
Phone: I love you, come back home

POW: I love you too
POW: Go to the head, and write a letter to the union of mothers (this is an organization in Russia for mothers of soldiers, often investigating what happened to their sons since the government doesnt say anything)

POW: Because, these bitches dont even take the 200s (this is Russian Military code for dead, when they ship a body back its "cargo 200"). They shoot the wounded (from context it seems like he is talking about the battlefield), and its a question if they will even consider exchanging POWs.

POW: Do you understand? They fucking killed everyone. Everyone! They dont even take back the corpses.

POW: What did those fucking bitches (back home) say? Noone got a notification that their loved one died? Its been a whole week and not even a notification?

POW: You dont go too loud over there, dont say that everyone is dead and that they dont take the bodies, or FSB will take you. Just say that they should at least exchange POWs. Because if you get too loud FSB will get you.

Phone: How are they treating you?

POW: They dont beat us, dont torture, they are feeding us.

POW: I love you, kiss our son for me.

@ScrollingLeaves re the dog, I've sent an email to the journalist asking if they can set up a crowd funding page, help Igor to do so, or failing that put me in direct touch with him so I can pay the vet bills. I'll let you know if there's any response.
I know it's only a dog and the poor people of Ukraine are going through much worse but I just feel like that poor man has been through so much and if his dog dies as a result of the journey to safety it will break him.

I am so glad you have. Just a second ago I was writing to the Guardian international desk to ask if they had a fund ( thanks to your idea). A few hours ago I had also written to the journalist, Daniel Boffey, ( who is in Kviv I saw) to ask if he had any contact in Zaporizhzia who could be sent money and find the man.

As you said before, with a crowd fund, any extra money could be used for others who need it.

I agree with all you said.

www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3484143-zelensky-appoints-new-commander-of-ukrainian-territorial-defense-forces.html

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Major General Ihor Tantsiura as Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, dismissing Yurii Halushkin from the post.

This seems odd. Halushkin seems to have done a good job so far??

RedToothBrush · 15/05/2022 22:42

Just seen an interesting figure for my council.

There are roughly 700 hosts signed up for the homes for Ukraine scheme. Just over 10% have been actioned and have guests coming or already here.

I've no idea how representative this is. I think we haven't had a huge number of people sign up for the scheme compared with other councils, particularly in the south.

ScrollingLeaves · 15/05/2022 22:58

@RedToothBrush re your council having actioned 10% of the 700 signed up with Homes for UKraine, and wondering if there are more signed up in the south.

It would seem so from this map:

I know there are definitely a lot more people signed up in the South East. But there are more people in the South East to begin with.

It also seems to be following patterns of affluence quite significantly too (for pretty obvious reasons). This means that the NW is at a disadvantage too.

Its more the 10% figure of people converting an offer into a firm visa application.

(Noting here that 30% of all applications are single men over 40...)

ScrollingLeaves · 15/05/2022 23:25

10% seems low after all this time.
Do you mean 30% of those offering homes are single men over 40? If so I don’t know why they aren’t banned from the list.

Yes, the word 'dismiss' is troubling. The war seems to be going well for Ukraine so why this. Pure conjecture on my part but I wonder whether Zelensky and Halushkin disagreed on the strategy re: Mariupol.

Large scale NATO exercises starting today in Estonia. Some of the largest ever in the block’s history. They’re code named……. Hedgehog. 😐
