Think I’ve come to the conclusion that in the event of nuclear war I can safely assume I will not be amongst the ‘lucky’ ones 😂😂 I have zero survival skills.

That would be the worst thread ever! I take the point about speculation in the event of, but I don't think it can be excluded from the discussion. I've found discussions of it helpful and I know those with anxiety have too. For example, Coffee made some brilliant, calming and informative points about it at the last panic crescendo on the thread. But when it gets to imagining the worst case I agree it's a bit overwhelming.

Fair enough! I am not one of those with anxiety myself so I will leave it to those of you who are to say what helps.

notimagain · 15/05/2022 18:03

It might be worth remembering we headed back into discussing nuclear issues today not because people felt a need to raise anxiety levels but because somebody expressed concern about a sensationalist story in the MSM about nuclear weapons..

Frankly I don’t think it’s healthy or even sensible to think we can somehow sanitize this discussion and keep debate away from one of the highly highly unlikely but possible consequences of the current conflict..in fact IMHO it’s quite dangerous to try and do that.

MagicFox · 15/05/2022 18:04

Yeah I agree, that's well put @notimagain

Just heard from my Ukrainian friend from Kharkiv. Adjusting well to life in Denmark. She’s quite concerned as both she and her son are beginning to show signs of PTSD, which I guess it normal unfortunately. Her husband is still alive, if not totally safe, in Kharkiv.

EdithStourton · 15/05/2022 18:26

@katem98 just to let you know that I informed MN that I can't read the images in your posts. The only way I could think of doing this was to report them and whinge.

Bloody upgrade: WTF did they bother?

Ijsbear · 15/05/2022 18:30

Euromaidan said that rescue operations will begin in Azovstal but they were linking an article from two days ago. It's difficult to know what will happen. It's not like the Russians keep their word.

The newly recruited troops from the oblasts around Ukraine have started training

⚡️ General Staff: Russia plans to send up to 2,500 reservists to Ukraine.

The new recruits are being trained at training grounds in Russia’s Voronezh, Belgorod, and Rostov oblasts, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

katem98 · 15/05/2022 18:34

Well that wasn't very helpful of me then @EdithStourton Grin sorry! I'm unsure how to link specific BBC online posts without linking their whole live feed of updates! And 9/10 links don't work for me!

I know it is not safe to read anything into what Putin says but I wonder whether he has lost his mojo somewhat.

First the muted V Day speeches and then not threatening the Finnish President.

Threats are easy so no reason why he isn't coming up the goods?

I don't think he would have threatened Niinistö over the phone in any case, they have a pretty civil relationship, meeting twice a year for the last 10 years so threatening in person wouldn't fit with that. But I do think he's realised all the threats haven't deterred Finland at all, only made us more determined to join NATO so no point escalating them.

The images didn't load for me either until I refreshed the page

If anyone can remember 1986, the Chernobyl disaster was first detected in Sweden. Nobody is going to set off a nuclear devise in Europe. The swirly weather patterns ensure that all countries are effected.

Some MSM wants us to be scared and capitulate to Russia. Maybe that is the problem we should be addressing.

Our own PM is as Corrupt as anything but reasonably unbribable. May people have paid him money but due to the Teflon coating, his response is likely to be..."but I thought Bob was my friend and wanted to pay for my wallpaper, well actually I thought Bob was a bit bonkers but you know...You meant he was trying to bribe me? Shock horror, I am much disappointed"

PestorPeston · 15/05/2022 18:54

Images load for me but are so tiny on a laptop that I can't read them.

katem98 · 15/05/2022 18:55

Sorry everyone, will copy and paste going forwards.

I am sure PTSD sets in just when a person feelssafer. What a terrible thing for them to live through, and they will be constantly worrying about her husband.

The dog of the guy who walked to safety is looking worse for wear.
I'm sure if the Guardian crowd funded for him he'd soon have enough to go to a vet and the balance could be donated to the Ukrainian cause.

Has everyone noted the shift in dialogue from Russia lost X amount of BTG to Putin lost X amount of BTG.
The off ramp squashes Putin.

DFOD · 15/05/2022 19:11

I wonder if Russia will attack Finland and/or Sweden ….. before their NATO membership comes into place?

Just to flex their muscles knowing that NATO can’t respond yet?

MagicFox · 15/05/2022 19:14

They've joined de facto - they have security agreements from the UK. Finland, anyway

OP posts:
DFOD · 15/05/2022 19:14

Maybe a cyber attack or continuing to punish with energy blocks to destabilise these countries.

MagicFox · 15/05/2022 19:14

Yes but the Finns are prepared for that

OP posts:
PestorPeston · 15/05/2022 19:18

Boris only had to dash over to Scandinavia last week and sign the mutual defence agreements because he forgot that now we have left the EU the old agreements are void. In my household the joke was that the EU lawyers had drafted the treaties because we forgot to.
Finland and Sweden are safe, even without NATO

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 15/05/2022 19:18

Haven't Finland and Sweden got assurances that they are covered by the NATO umbrella whilst the application goes through? And Bo Jo was over there signing a defence pact with them last week because we're no longer covered by the EU defence treaty.
Plus I'm hoping Russia are doing so badly in Ukraine they won't even consider attacking Sweden & Finland, I'm thinking the stopping of electricity was a nod to the 'retaliation' that was mooted by Lavrov.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 15/05/2022 19:19

Cross post.

Ijsbear · 15/05/2022 19:23

I suspect any physical attack on Sweden or Finland will create a huge response that Putin isn't ready for - if he has any sanity left. But there are still people around him who might have!

I don't think Russia would dare.
