As an aside...I've just been shown a front page..I'm not going to provide the link but what the heck is that UK Newspaper up to (again)..

Is it being paid by somebody in the Kremlin to repeatedly to try scare the pants off people and undermine support for Ukraine?

Yes I just saw itGrin What do they genuinely gain by such headlines?

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2022 10:20

Michael A Horowitz AT michaelh992
According to an adviser of the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior, Viktor Andrusiv, Russia plans to fight until the end of the year, hoping that an energy crisis during this winter will force the West to negotiate.

Fighting for months would require significant military resources for Russia, even if Moscow decides to freeze all of its offensives and go on the defensive. I don't think it's impossible but holding the line may prove difficult.

Still, I am noting those statements, as I think they are interesting when thinking about the possible course of the war in the coming months, and what may influence the Russian decision-making process (if there is one)

They still think they can divide the west...

MagicFox · 14/05/2022 10:20

In good news though, it did clarify the Russian directive about not travelling to the UK - linked to visas and 'financial difficulty' for Russians. But yes the way they twist everything to be as inflammatory as possible is disgusting

It’s how they get clicks and thus revenue. No more and no less. It’s an utter rag for that very reason.

I am really disappointed they didn't run an ad feature below that article. Something along the lines of:

Hemail Fashion Feature
Get the Aleksey Z look guys for just 499.99 Rubles
This fetching green Disruptive Pattern Marking combat shirt could be yours for a little over 1 Ruble a day. In a cheaply printed brash pond-algae tone, you will be the talk of all your mates around the Datchas this Summer as you put on a chesty display exuding your inner weakness and complete frustration while swigging vodka neat from the bottle by the campfire.

I agree, I think it’s that simple.

Talk now of negotiations to get 60 wounded out of the Steelworks.

This article is from a civilian who was evacuated in the end. www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3482988-hanna-who-was-evacuated-from-azovstal-with-her-child.html

Some of the civilians who are pro-Russia betrayed the remaining people once they got out :s Humanity stinks sometimes. People they'd eaten with, shared sleeping quarters with, betrayed.

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2022 12:16

Finland confirm that Russia has cut electricity supplies.

Finland have war gamed for this. This isnt a biggie but the Russians feel like they have been tough and retaliated. Whilst cutting their own revenue in the process.

India banned wheat exports over food security
Despite being the world's second-largest producer of wheat, India consumes most of the amount it produces.

Two thoughts come to mind:

  1. It's good propaganda. By calling out what Russia might do, Ukraine bolsters their allies resolve and reminds them that war could drag on longer than we all hope. Just because the RU forces are predicted to collapse in the summer does not mean they will or that Russia will give up.

  2. If their reports are true, Russia hanging on and hoping for winter does not sound like a country that is confident of winning.

  3. Europe's going to have a laser focus on energy security over the coming months. In that regard, we really should send some flowers to Putin. First the threats, then the sideshow of cutting off Finland's electricity...if that does not prompt a rethink about oil and gas supplies, nothing will.

Yup, I just view it as Russia cutting its nose off to spite its face, helping Finland stop funding Russia.

It will increase prices though (which have already increased a lot, like in the UK) which is not pleasant for people already struggling but fixed term contracts are very common here so its only really the people still foolish enough to be on market rate contracts (like I was, until a few months ago when I realised how stupid that was). Though, happily, the people with the very lowest incomes won't be affected because, unless things have changed since I was in that position, the social pays their electric bills separate to their income support.

The upside of all this is the speeding up of the move to renewables and away from fossil fuels, which is a nice silver line to this massive black cloud.

I really hope karma gets those ones that betrayed the others, what a horrid thing to do after being sheltered there for so long, sharing food and everything with each other and then betraying them.

Lavrov claims the West has declared all out hybrid warfare on Russia (Sky News)

Natsku · 14/05/2022 13:46

I suppose we have, if by all out hybrid warfare he means people are being mean to me and no longer trying to appease me at all costs...

Niinistö called Putin to tell him, in a non-aggressive way, we don't care about your threats, Finland will join NATO if it wants to.

Once again, the art of bollockspeak. Unless "hybrid" in that sentence means "completely imaginary" ?

Anyway Lavrov: go fuck yourself. MNHQ will happily provide you with my details. Pick on someone your own size for a change you lapdog prick. Or I will taunt you a second time.

Its the one gutting thing. They are actually good at eurovision!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 14/05/2022 15:18

What I can't understand is why do they keep threatening everyone? Do they know they'll eventually have to follow through then it's curtains for them as well?

It reminds me of a frantic, but ineffective parent threatening their toddler in the supermarket, but never actually doing anything 🙄
