I know a young couple in their early 20's who have a young son, who is nearly 20 months old. The Girl's mother is dating her boyfriend's dad. So if they were to marry, they will be step brother and sister, her mother will be also her stepmother and also mother in law, if the girl marries her boyfriend.
I know there is no blood relation, only by marriage, but think this is werid and borderline incest.

Slightly unusual but not incest.

NeedAnOffSwitch · 08/05/2022 16:36

I grew up with my stepbrothers so me getting into a relationship with any of them would certainly have an incestuous feel to it. However, if my husband's mother (who has seen my family at our wedding and that's pretty much it) and my father met and got together then no, it would not feel incestuous. It's no worse than two sisters dating two brothers. They aren't related but do have relatives that are married.

FixItUpChappie · 08/05/2022 16:37

I don't understand how it's disgusting for two unrelated adults to be in a relationshipConfused

NumberTheory · 08/05/2022 16:42

It's nothing like incest. There's no blood relationship, no family familiarity built from living in the same house with a caring relationship between then and no power imbalance.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 08/05/2022 16:45

Get over yourself. No Blood relatives and surely everyone deserves to find someone and be happy. Stop being so judgy!

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 08/05/2022 16:46

You could have saved yourself the bother of a thread by just looking up incest in a dictionary and realising what you're describing is not it. Hmm

tuliplover · 08/05/2022 16:50

That's like saying two siblings can't date two siblings. It will be unfortunate if one of the couple has a bad breakup but no it's not borderline incest.
I have a friend who married one brother, divorced and is now dating his brother. I find it weird but the brothers are perfectly fine with it and are currently all sharing a house!!

StopStartStop · 08/05/2022 17:01

Where do younger people get off, telling older people who they can or cannot shag?

Who's suggested anything of the sort?

Luculentus · 08/05/2022 17:04

Not incest, not disgusting, not weird. The way your mind works is a bit strange, though.

OnoNotagain · 08/05/2022 17:10

Not at all. They are adults who can have a relationship with whoever they like (assuming they're both single). I don't see a problem.

MangyInseam · 08/05/2022 17:11

No, it's not incest as most people think about it.

But incest taboos are not indentical in every culture and it is common in many societies for them to cover some non-blood relations. Probably because the purpose of such taboos is not only preventing inbreeding, but to prevent social problems. SO, you aren't supposed to marry your step-father, not because he's related, but maybe because it creates inheritance issues, or that kind of thing prevents the society from developing the wider family connections that it needs to thrive.

In this case it seems like a bad idea because if things go wrong in the relationship it will have ongoing impacts on the next generation.

Wise up !!

bridgetreilly · 08/05/2022 17:30

You are clearly judging and with no good reason. Mind your own business, OP.

3peassuit · 08/05/2022 17:36

Bit awkward if there’s a bad split but not incest.

iheartmybeachhut · 08/05/2022 17:38

How does it actually affect you? They aren't related and they are free to make their own choices. Take the judgy knickers off !

Cookiecrumble22 · 08/05/2022 17:40

They are not blood related so how is it incest

whynotwhatknot · 08/05/2022 17:41

no you clearly dont know the meaning from your op

nothing like incest

Butternusquish · 08/05/2022 17:44

Nc for this.

My DPs sister has been having an affair with her daughter's estranged husband for years. They aren't divorced and her grandchildren live with him rather than the daughter.

It's an unholy mess as the daughter has found out and isn't happy about it but her mother refuses to completely end the relationship. She wants to be 'friends' with him. So potentially his sister could end up as both stepmother and grandmother to the children. Not incestuous but mind boggling.

Abraxan · 08/05/2022 17:45

It isn't incest and it is considered perfectly acceptable at this stage, whilst none are married, or brought up together as children.

There are some rules if they were married though. Not all step relations can marry and there are rules in place regarding age and relationship.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/05/2022 17:48

Google incest (and grow up).

hellcatspanglelalala · 08/05/2022 17:54

I assume the young couple weren't brought up together as brother and sister? If they have then yes it's weird. If their parents started seeing each other more recently then YABU.

IhateLillac222 · 08/05/2022 17:58

Hey OP, does her name begin with M,
I am curious

canonlydoblue · 08/05/2022 17:59

Its not incest, not even borderline. And its not weird. You are quite clearly judging by referring to it as weird. My brother and I once dated a sister and a brother. Its no different from that.
