I'd imagine because Russia is far more likely to invade Finland (as a Russian Grand Duchy until 1917) than Sweden.

And also perhaps to give a further push to Finland to join Nato?

Im giving up on the crossings out. Whether there are dashes before n after or not, some things just come out crossed out. Get yer act together Mumsnet.

As a matter of interest, if you look at it in "Preview" does it have the crossings-out? If not, then this is a truly shocking glitch. I have tried telling them on their "replatforming" thread about this problem, but they haven't answered.

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 13:45

@RedToothBrush

The trouble is that when you are used to a terrible standard of living for generations, you don't see others around living massively better because you're all in the same boat there's a strong sense of community and on top of that there's the propaganda ... and then the fear of what happens if you protest ... then I'm not sure how far people will get restive. That article from an anti-Putin site was quite revealing.

Natsku · 11/05/2022 13:46

TiddyTidTwo · 11/05/2022 13:35

Why not Finland though?

I would assume selfish reasons - much less likely to need to help Sweden than Finland! But perhaps Finland will get the deal too, rumours abound and can only wait and see which are true and which aren't.

Igotjelly · 11/05/2022 13:47

I think its interesting to note that Avril Haines, the current Director of National Intelligence, is being widely quoted as saying that Putin could authorise the use of nuclear weapons if he feels he is losing in Ukraine. What isn't so widely reported is that she was giving evidence at a Senate Select Committee on a number of global threats. She was asked if she thought nuclear weapons could be authorised for use in Ukraine and she said only if Putin thinks there is an existential threat to the Kremlin. She was then asked if she thought losing in Ukraine could be considered as such and she said that yes it is possible (what she did not say is that its a foregone conclusion - it would have been disingenuous to say no because no one really knows what goes on in Putin's head.

It's selective reporting. To be honest the only article i've found that even mentions wider things said at the committee is in the Guardian (can't link as on my phone and its hopeless).

It looks like Boris will be signing a similar agreement in Finland later on today: www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-signs-new-assurances-to-bolster-european-security-11-may-2022

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 14:17

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime yup, tried it on preview. Looks clean. Then it posts with the crossing out.

Weird that on some people's phones it's not there but on my desktop pc and my phone it is.

Incidentally I get the same when I post a link to another site. Looks fine in preview then click the post button and suddenly its all in code!

I got the crossings out of one of your posts earlier today on my telephone ( iPhone)

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 14:24

Are the round-up posts actually 1) useful and 2) readable at all? Otherwise I'll stop

Just saw it on the news here too, so the rumour I heard was thankfully not true (maybe the Swedes were just teasing us with the rumour Grin)

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/05/2022 14:34

The crossings out show on Chrome on my Android phone. Stop putting hyphens in at the beginning of your paragraphs and see if it makes a difference?

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 14:42

I don't put hyphens in at all ....

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 14:43

Hrm I winder if bullet points count as hyphens...

Cheeky Swedes. Grin I've been following the Finnish news but I still can't work out if Boris has even arrived yet. I want to know what's going on!

prettybird · 11/05/2022 14:56

Your round up posts are really useful @Ijsbear - please continue doing them. Flowers

Why not try a tild ~ rather than a bullet point or hyphen?

@MNHQ must be really fed up of people posting on the "updates on re-platforming" thread as now I can't even open that thread: it kicks me completely out of the (iOS) app every time I try to open it Shock It's obviously not every thread as I got into this one in order to post ConfusedWink

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 15:02

The bulle points are copI'd from the original article actually. Oh well

prettybird · 11/05/2022 15:02

Just posting again as I'm sure I had put in returns/new paragraphs on my last post Confused.
So this should be a 2nd paragraph.

And this should be a 3rd paragraph, only this time I did a double return to creat a space between the paragraphs.

Or is it the emoticon that "deletes" the return? let's tryHmm
Should be a new paragraph Wink.
Crazy that we need to experiment like this on a live platform. Angry

Tillsforthrills · 11/05/2022 15:12

I can see crossed out points but still read them! Please do keep posting the round ups @Ijsbear

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 11/05/2022 15:20

Yes pls keep posting round ups Ijsbear.

Ijsbear · 11/05/2022 15:28

The press conference is starting in an about an hour or two hours depending on the source, I think probably in an hour.

"the body cannot relax" :( Pure trauma.

Ukraine has upgraded its goals from seeking to push Russian forces back to territories they held before Feb. 24 to looking to push Moscow's forces out completely, Kyiv's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the Financial Times. www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/05/11/ukraine-as-its-happening-a76553

Presumably they think it's possible, which is kinda a good sign. I worry about the manpower that Ukraine is losing. Russia still has a lot of troops there.
