UK PM to discuss European security with Sweden and Finland's leaders

The UK's prime minister will visit Sweden and Finland later today to discuss the war in Ukraine, as both nations consider whether to join the Nato alliance.
Boris Johnson will meet the leaders of both countries during a 24-hour trip on Wednesday.
His official spokesman said the visit was also about the "security of Europe more broadly".
Support for joining Nato has increased in both Sweden and Finland since Russia invaded Ukraine, despite their long history of pursuing policies of military neutrality to avoid conflict with regional powers.
Both countries are expected to decide within days whether to join the alliance.

I wonder what impact destroying the Northern Ireland Protocol will have on 'security of Europe more broadly'? Will starting a trade war with the EU and alienating the USA improve or weaken security of Europe? And does Johnson actually give a shit?

Tweet - Darth Putin

I rather enjoyed this 😁

EmeraldShamrock1 · 11/05/2022 11:02

It's one that personally I hope the Powers That Be consider now; at the beginning it might have inflamed things very badly but the war is settling into a grind and actually Russia -is- becoming more isolated.

Me too.

I understand there is a million reasons why they shouldn't however it is IMO showing that the bully wins.

Months of talking, millions displaced depending on the kindness of strangers.

Ireland would be fucked seeing how Ukraine is left as a non a member of Nato with a weak defensive army in terms of man power and equipment.

Let's hope Putin doesn't want it. 😬

I take it more as a negative tbh. I am expecting France, Germany and China to try and force a settlement on Ukraine in which Putin makes gains and there are few assurances long term for Ukraine.

Worth remembering the UN permenant members of the security control who have the most influence are UK, US, France, China and Russia because of the VETO.

The other current members are
Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, United Arab Emirates

Of those I think Ukraine can only really count on Albania and Norway to fight its corner. Ireland is liable to follow France's lead. The others all have their own agendas which aren't necessarily aligned with Ukraine's.

Yes I agree with this. In the meantime Putin can attempt to move on Transnistria then, as part of a deal, give up claims to that territory while resettling those who wish to go to the Donbas.

As an aside, the UAE are going to clean up very nicely now. They will be the main safe deposit now for Russian wealth (the flows have accelerated since February) which in turn will be repackaged up into 'private equity investment' into Africa and of course Brazil, before potentially being recycled further. Non-Russian wealth will also increasingly now flow to the UAE. And there is nothing really the West can do about that.

Little ripples....

CasualObserverUK · 11/05/2022 11:35

Look at this list - very impressive.

The Pentagon just distributed this rundown of U.S. military assistance provided to Ukraine:

Distribution list to Ukraine

thereisonlyoneofme · 11/05/2022 11:47

Is Russia secretly getting weaponry from elsewhere, China, etc ?

If Odessa is taken that will be disaster for Ukraine wont it, their only port.

Well they aren't getting drones.

If they are getting Chinese weapons its not showing up on the battlefield in terms of captured stuff.

Thats not to say they won't. Think about how NATO is having to train to use their stuff rather than soviet stuff though and compatibility issues over ammunition size.

prettybird · 11/05/2022 11:55

@TargusEasting - what was the end of your post? - it stops at "An". Yet another glitch of the downgrade "upgrade", which seems to truncate posts that are replying to a quote Hmm

TargusEasting · 11/05/2022 12:00

@prettybird Another result of the upgrade is that I cannot read pictures posted when on the PC. It is too small and unclear. This is the final paragraph:

Thank you Flowers

I forgot you were likewise suffering from the poor pictures (which are ok on the app Confused) Blush It was just the last sentence that was missing Hmm

TargusEasting · 11/05/2022 12:10

@CasualObserverUK There is a comprehensive list on Wikipedia, which does get updated from time to time and includes military and humanitarian aid. See Wikipedia link here.

I suspect a couple of countries will be sending things that are not on the official list. As I have said on previous threads, wars are places where arms firms alongside the military are able to trial latest generation arms and munitions. these will be closely monitored and if necessary destroyed in the field if not used. A US official alluded to new weaponry.

Agree that I don't think we're seeing China supplying Russia with any military hardware at this stage. I expect it would have been mentioned in various bits of intelligence briefing if the US/NATO suspected it was providing such equipment.

Natsku · 11/05/2022 12:13

Finland is keeping all supplies sent secret now, to make sure they arrive safely. Bet a fair number of countries are doing the same.

A sad article giving insight into one village in Buryatia where soldiers are returning dead.

TargusEasting · 11/05/2022 13:02

@Igotjelly Somewhere in the last 72 hours I read a report from Ukranian Intelligence who were satisfied China had not been sending any goods that could be incorporated into Russian weaponry. I cannot recall where but in an EE publication I think or Al Jazeera.

That Russian general MagicFox sent a link to earlier, who was writing reasons against the invasion before the war, said Russia was disintegrating. One of the reasons he mentioned as adding to that was the falling birth rate. (Kalim Galeev wrote about the falling birth rate too.) The general pointed out how this will only get worse both in Russia and Ukraine owing to the massive loss of young men’s lives there will be in both countries.

You can only be corrupt for so long before it all starts to catch up with you. (UK please take note of this...)

Kamil Galeev keeps reinterating the ethnic tensions within the country in addition to this. There is a massive difference between the cities of Moscow and St Petersburg and rest of Russia, particularly rural Russia. He makes a big point about how the West only talks to opposition leaders from the two big cities. Never the regions. And that how Navalny has an ideology which will continue to exploit and control the regions and minorities from a white, Moscow power base.

He did a short thread about how there is this ideological gulf and how many from minority backgrounds don't feel wedded to 'The Cause' as such.

Kamil Galeev AT kamilkazani
Today is May 9. My friend had a walk around Moscow and noticed an interesting pattern. Shop, restaurant, pub owners in Moscow all cover their property with posters and St George ribbons demonstrating their adherence to the state cult of the Great Victory

You know who doesn't?

Halal restaurants. Here you see three Chayhanas run be Central Asian immigrants and predominantly for other Gastarbeiters. They have no May 9 symbolics at all. The fourth is the restaurant of Vaynakh (=Chechen & Ingush) cuisine. It doesn't have any Victory symbolics either

That was all taken by a single person during his walk over Moscow. And it's very telling. It suggests that the Great Victory cult and Russian imperial ideology in general didn't put their roots down the minority populations that seriously

Heavy participation of minorities in Z-war is well-known. And yet, in Ukraine they're fighting for the alien ideology which they don't share. They're following the orders of Moscow. Therefore, stripping Moscow of any ability to give them orders is vital for the future peace

This photo shows a degree of military hysteria imposed by the Russian gov. They literally put a military field kitchen under the USSR flag and feeding passerbys with "soldier rations". Government enforces such exaltation and businesses comply. Except for the ethnic businesses

The jokes about nutella, washing machines and toilets aren't unimportant. Ukrainians having these things and having a higher standard of living will drip, drip, drip back to communities and fuel a sense of grievance in multiple ways. Some against the state.

Emphasising this in memes and propaganda pushes the message in a subtle way too.

And DH was saying yesterday that apparently 20% of Russian internet users now use a VPN. TWENTY PER CENT. Of course you only have the internet in more affluent areas but you still have an issue. Why do all these Russians WANT a VPN to begin with? Think about it (there are numerous reasons - many of them culture related).

Russia definitely is falling apart. One of the jokes is that many Russia cities look nearly as bad as Maripol - except they haven't actually been at war. Thats how desparate life is. Seeing there is an alternative is precisely the thing that Putin hates more than anything.

The war is about Nutella Availability Not Nato.

When it comes down to it, what ordinary people prioritise in life is very different to what politicians do. Taking for granted access to the basics, will easily see a government fall. In any country. Remember even China has been struggling with this in Shanghai in the last couple of months...

UK and Sweden have signed a bilateral agreement to come to each other's help - including with military force - should either country be attacked.

That's good for Sweden. Finland is supposedly not getting a signed agreement though, just assurances, but will find out for sure this evening when they have the press conference here.

TiddyTidTwo · 11/05/2022 13:35

Why not Finland though?

Why not Finland though?

I'd imagine because Russia is far more likely to invade Finland (as a Russian Grand Duchy until 1917) than Sweden.

TiddyTidTwo · 11/05/2022 13:42

I see, thank you. Shame though.
