I agree with the pp on 9 May - the only things I have seen or heard about it have been speculation outside Russia that something significant will happen/by announced. Nothing from Russia itself.

I suspect he has a speech writer but contributes a lot himself, as he is a good communicator, a key skill in his past profession, which is why he was successful (I believe he's very good at getting research/background information). He can do that because he is, by all accounts, a good delegator Smile - unlike Putin.

It's a real strength Smile

@DFOD
I s j b e a r

Thank you for Zelensky’s speech.

Tears, no words.

Someone once taught me this line from Virgil, and it came to mind:

*sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangent.
www.faena.com/aleph/lacrimae-rerum-or-the-tears-of-things)

Book 1, verse 462), standing in a temple to the goddess Juno in Carthage, the Trojan hero, Aeneas, observed a mural on which was represented the long ago battle of Troy. Watching his ancestors and compatriots struggling and losing their lives in the legendary Trojan War, the hero finally exclaimed: “sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangent.” “There are tears of things, and mortal matters touch the mind.”

I read his wife was a writer. From the way he operates, I would guess a very intelligent collaboration with several people. There's been nothing like them in the public eye since Mandela.

From the ISW:

Key Takeaways

Russian forces destroyed several bridges to slow Ukrainian forces and may be conducting a limited withdrawal northeast of Kharkiv city in the face of the successful Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Ukrainian forces are making significant progress around Kharkiv and will likely advance to the Russian border in the coming days.

Ukrainian forces continued to repel Russian advances toward Barvinvoke and Russian forces have likely abandoned efforts to drive directly southeast toward Slovyansk. ISW cannot confirm claims of a Ukrainian counteroffensive toward Izyum at this time.

Russian forces claimed to capture Popasna on May 7 but remain largely stalled in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government confirmed the last remaining civilians trapped in the Azovstal plant evacuated on May 7, though the remaining Ukrainian defenders appear unlikely to surrender. ISW will likely be unable to report any discrete changes in control of terrain until Russian forces capture the plant as a whole due to the poor information environment in Mariupol.

By all indications, Russian forces will announce the creation of a Kherson People’s Republic or possibly forcibly annex Kherson Oblast in the coming weeks to cement its occupation administration and attempt to permanently strip these territories from Ukraine.

Russian forces continued to target Odesa with cruise missile strikes and conduct false-flag attacks in Transnistria over the past several days.

From UkraineNOW telegram channel. Highlights only.

▪️Ukrainian aircraft struck at Russian positions on Zmiiniy. The enemy suffers significant losses, both in the "island forces" and in naval vessels. "Bayraktars" destroyed two Russian boats, and one more — damaged.

▪️In the Donetsk and Luhansk directions, Ukrainian troops repulsed 9 enemy attacks, according to the Joint Forces Operation. During the day, the invaders lost 19 tanks, 20 units of armored combat vehicles, 4 special armored vehicles and 6 vehicles. Ukrainian air defense units shot down one "Mi-28H" attack helicopter and six "Orlan-10" drones over Donbass.

▪️The United States, France, Germany, Italy and Britain have agreed to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

▪️A radioactive flask was found in Bucha, which the invaders took out of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant during the occupation [!]

▪️The international organization "Save the Children" will allocate 72 million UAH to support Mariupol families through the I-Mariupol centers. The funds will be used to purchase food and hygiene kits, as well as organizational support.

▪️The threat of rocket and air strikes on the territory of Ukraine from the territory of Belarus remains.

▪️In the Slobozhanskiy direction, the enemy focused its main efforts on preventing the further advance of our troops towards the state border of Ukraine, to the north and northeast of the city of Kharkiv.

▪️The enemy is preparing to advance in the directions Izyum — Barvinkove and Izyum — Slovyansk.

▪️In the Lyman direction, as a result of the attack, the enemy captured the northern outskirts of Shandrygolov. [one of the more rare admissions of Russia taking a place]

▪️In the South Buh and Tavriya areas, the occupying forces, with the aviation support, strike at military and civilian targets, regroup and strengthen units, increase the system of fire damage and logistics.

▪️The situation in the Bessarabian direction remains tense. Armed formations in the Transnistria region of the Republic of Moldova and units of the operational group of Russian troops are in full combat readiness.

▪️On the previous day, one "Mi-28H" helicopter, seven "Orlan" UAVs, two "Outpost" UAVs and two cruise missiles were hit by anti-aircraft missile units of the Air Force. In addition, two "Orlan-type" UAVs were destroyed by anti-aircraft missile units of the Land Forces of Ukraine

from the BBC
Azovstal fighters to give rare news conference
The fighters holed up inside the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol are expected to hold a rare online news conference shortly, in what will likely include a plea for a plan to guarantee their rescue.

Ukrainian officials say all women, children and elderly who were sheltering in the site's underground bunkers and shelters have now been evacuated.

But with the civilians out, there are fears Russia may step up its attacks on the site. Russia says the fighters, believed to number in the hundreds, must lay down their arms. They reject this, saying they won't surrender.

We'll bring you updates from the news conference as it happens.

Those expected to speak to journalists include the Commander of the Azov Regiment, Lt Col Denis Radis Prokopenko and his deputy, Cpt Svyatoslav "Kalina" Palamar.

Ijsbear · 08/05/2022 12:05

Interesting article with Andrei Soldatov, 'a Russian investigative journalist who has covered the country’s shadowy security services for decades' .

www.rferl.org/a/russia-ukraine-war-setbacks-strategy-generals-putin/31839737.html

Clearly a lot of the military is highly pro0war and pro taking over Ukraine.

But it seems that the culture in the military and in the FSB - everywhere in fact - is to never take blame; to point fingers any other way than at themselves.

This will make it harder for the military to adapt and learn because before you can really become flexible and adaptive you have to be willing to say ' Ok this didn't work'. If it is too dangerous for someone to say "ok I got it wrong, this is why, this looks like it will work better" without getting shot at, then it will badly affect their ability to improve.

It kinda explains some of the awful way they treat the Ukrainians too. They are weaker and blame-shifters always act worse towards the people who are lower-status.

This Sunday is a sunny day for gardening where I live.
I just saw this which is something to think about if you are doing this today.

The BBC reporting on people who escaped from Izyum:

Elena misses the days when she would plant flowers in the garden with her granddaughter.

"We did not realise how lucky we were," she said. "Now I realise I was living in a paradise."

20 IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) cargo planes have done the return trip to Russia in the last 15 days.
So looks like Russia has been getting supplies from Iran.

Is it just supplies do you think? I was wondering if it might be soldiers?

Sorry, I had read that Russian troops were being withdrawn so as to send them to Ukraine and was muddled.

It's because you're using '-' as bullet points putting a dash either side of written content will cross it out (standard web behaviour, and though confusing, probably intended to work that way).

If it were Iranian soldiers, there would be no reason why (say) the US, France, UK etc could not subcontract some of their soldiers to the UA. So, doubtful I think because that would be such a massive escalation towards an undeniable WW3.

❗️Defenders of Mariupol estimated that they had killed almost 2,500 occupiers and wounded about 5,000 Russian soldiers.

More than 60 tanks were destroyed and 30 damaged. This was announced by Ukrainian fighters from the blocked Azovstal during an online conference.
