@strawberriesarenot I'm sorry what! A 3 year old saw you on your phone and before saying anything else or asking what you were looking at she asked if Putin was dead.....

strawberriesarenot · 07/05/2022 17:13

She was with her dad, he laughed. I suppose she'd heard grown ups talking at home. I wasn't looking up Putin- I was just waiting in the queue. We thought she was quite funny.

I wonder ...

RedToothBrush · 07/05/2022 17:25

3 Ukrainian soliders killed and 6 wounded by the Russians during the evacuation.

notimagain · 07/05/2022 17:28

I do wonder if because they are used to controlling the flow of information inside Russia that they can't comprehend that same control doesn't exist outside it. There's a real naivety imho re: the eyes in the sky that they simply haven't factored into their war gaming. It's possible to see what's unfolding in real time - what units are moving where, what assets are in play and fundamentally you can't hide war crimes by burying the bodies in mass graves that existed before the area was repatriated and say "it wasn't us guv

I suspect some in the Russian hierarchy will have been intelligent to have know about what the eyes (and "ears") in the sky can reveal.

I'd guess it's more a case of them thinking "don't care guv",plus if any gaming was done probably modelled around a one week war..

Igotjelly · 07/05/2022 17:32

All women, children and the elderly have been successfully evacuated from the steel plant. Thank fucking god!

MagicFox · 07/05/2022 17:35

Oh God, I'm so pleased to hear that. It's wonderful. I haven't stopped thinking about those children. I hope they can recover from what they've been through

Thank goodness. I hope the negotiators say to each other, โ€˜Well we did something good there. Now, letโ€™s send out for sandwiches and see what can we do about the rest of this mess.โ€™

minsmum · 07/05/2022 18:24

Next must be the wounded and dying soldiers I believe the Geneva says covers this. The UN should be helping facilitate it

minsmum · 07/05/2022 18:24

Convention

Serhiy Volynskiy,30,
the commander of Mykolaiv marines. Here's his latest post:
Just my thoughts :
โ–ช๏ธwhat do I feel?
Looks like I'm in some hellish reality show where we military fighting for life, taking every chance to save and the whole world is just watching an interesting story! Such scenarios are used in movies and series. The only difference is that it's not a movie, and we are not fictional characters! This is the real life! Pain, suffering, hunger, torment, tears, fear, death - all real!
โ–ช๏ธ what surprises me?
Cynicism!!! There are no limits to human cynicism!!! There are generally accepted rules, they are the same for everyone, certified by a bunch of laws, signatures and stamps, but they don't apply! Then what are they needed for?
โ–ช๏ธ what am I hoping for?
It's a miracle!!! That the higher powers (in the general understanding of this word) will find a solution for our rescue! And this hell of a reality show will end...
Higher powers, we are waiting for the result of your actions... Time goes by, and time is our lives!
THE SEA JEWELRY - ALWAYS FAITHFUL!
GLORY TO UKRAINE!
P.S. White flags, for the evacuation of civilians, have been used for the fourth time, during each evacuation of people.
The price of the latest evacuation is three killed and six wounded soldiers. Mariupol Garrison did everything possible to save civilians.
We ask everyone to do their best to evacuate the military.

He really does have a point

Ijsbear · 07/05/2022 19:31

Glad the civilians are out of the Steelworks.

It isn't enough but at least Guterres achieved that.

ScrollingLeaves · 07/05/2022 19:40

we military fighting for life, taking every chance to save and the whole world is just watching an interesting story!

It has been like that, and it feels shameful. I wish they knew people have been actually praying for them too, or others praying for them in the sense of hoping for them.

How wonderful that all the women and children and old people are out. That was so well done of the negotiators and the evacuators. If only the soldiers can be got out now.

The endurance and bravery of those soldiers, and the civilians, must surely be among the greatest examples ever known. How many weeks ago is it now since it seemed their last hour in the steel plant had already come?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 07/05/2022 19:48

chng.it/fyJHfQyBtY

I have just signed this petition for Mariupol. Not sure if it will achieve anything but I signed it anyway. There is a rally at Downing Street tomorrow as well asking for intervention for everyone left at the steel works.

MagicFox · 07/05/2022 19:49

God protect him. But, to you all, do you really think the world is just watching this as an 'interesting story'? Bloody hell, it's terrifying. It's horrific to witness. I think of nothing else. Is the world generally really thinking of it this way? Maybe we're in an echo chamber, it doesn't feel that way to me through.

@MagicFox I think the vast majority are appalled and very distressed by what is happening. However, I can understand why he feels the way he does. It must feel as though you are fighting on your own out there because quite frankly they are. We are in their corner, but they are alone in the ring. The dirty work is all theirs

MagicFox · 07/05/2022 19:54

I know, it's unimaginable

OP posts:
notimagain · 07/05/2022 19:55

Glad the non-combatants were able to be evacuated.

The Ukrainian soldiers staying behind are of course in a somewhat horribly different position to the civilians.

The question now is are the Russians going to be willing to stand back and watch them being evacuated back to Ukraine controlled territory and take the risk of them being recycled back into combat?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 07/05/2022 20:01

It is possible that the people on this thread are following events more closely and are therefore more emotionally invested than your average person but I'd say the vast majority of the free speaking world is upset by what is happening in Ukraine.

TheABC · 07/05/2022 20:02

What's happening to the Mauripol soldiers is horrible. I want them out of there - who does not? At this stage, though, Ukraine does not have the resources AFAIK to free them and Russia does not have the inclination. If we went in, in any guise, the war spreads outwards. At best, they will get a quick death. At worst they will be captured and tortured by Russia.

I've signed the petitions and donated but I am under no illusion I could run over there and save them. Short of digging a tunnel to the steelworks, what could?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 07/05/2022 20:02

@notimagain I'd say no chance. But I have never wanted to be more wrong.

I think many people are like you. I have been checking first thing every morning, and throughout the day till very late at night, thinking and thinking about the people in the steel plant. The petition Hills just posted apparently is the most signed ever. But at the same time, if people are not there experiencing that horror for themselves, then he is right, they are watching.
