⚡️Railway traffic resumes on rebuilt Irpin bridge.

The bridge was rebuilt over the course of one month after Irpin was liberated. It was destroyed in March when Russian forces tried to cross the Irpin River in the direction of Kyiv, during the battle of Kyiv.

#Russian shelling in the #Kharkiv Oblast has destroyed the Hryhorii Skovoroda Literary Memorial Museum

(However a lot of the most valuable exhibits had already been removed for safety)

Considerable mutterings about Ukrainian counterattacks around Kharkiv, and it seems to be accepted that the Russians have been pushed back in 6 - 10 places in the last few days, including a big push by the Ukrainians 40km East.

May 6, 2022. Ukrainian forces conducted a significant counteroffensive alleviating pressure against Kharkiv City and driving Russian forces from being about 5 kilometers be out of tube artillery range.

Update on Germany and the damn flags. They've really pushed the boat out, eh? kyivindependent.com/

Berlin allows Ukrainian flag, symbols for 1 hour on May 8.

Russian flags will also be authorized for one hour. Berlin authorities previously forbade Ukrainians to bring Ukrainian symbols, putting them on the same list as Russian imperialist symbols such as the “Z” sign in support of Russian aggression, to demonstrations on the Wo

sorry about the truncated post at the end. At least there were no Mumsnet-created crossings out this time. Are we sure Justine isn't a Russian general?

ljsbear, thanks for sharing the link. It looks like no one in Russian Elite is happy with the war and they are all suffering. But they reap what they sow.

Natsku · 07/05/2022 13:04

Some Russian website is saying Finland wants to join NATO because of a Hitler-cult. I wonder how they come up with this nonsense.

Has Anyone studied Russian history from the pov of their perception of European countries that are further west?

The emphasis on the UK being a dangerous foe might come from the mitary training that the UK gave Ukranian forces + the perception that the UK Is an unofficial state of the US, but I wonder if there's a deeper link going back over 150 years or so. Marx died in the UK and(might be wrong about this) but hasnt Britain been a home for nobles fleeing the Russian Revolution ? Wondering if there is a deeper resentment / fear of Great Britain in the Kremlin that goes back a long way

EdithStourton · 07/05/2022 14:25

@Ijsbear a fair number of White Russians found sanctuary not just in the UK but across the British Empire.

Also, for a very long time, the UK was not just a major power but the major power. IME, that still influences how this country is perceived abroad.

They are right to be afraid. A chirpy little girl (about 3 or 4) saw me scrolling my phone at the Wilko's checkout this morning and asked very hopefully, 'Is Putin dead?'

Kalim Galeev 5 May

Watch these mobilised Ukrainian nationals from the Donbass who are being press-ganged into the army by Russians and sent into the frontal assaults as the cannon fodder. This gives some context to how the male population of Donbass is being "recycled" (утилизировать) in Z-war

(video is shown of young soldiers in a truck who say they were forced to Russia without their papers and are now being used.)
t.co/eS9gySb0cx

That's how a mobilisation is proceeding in the Donetsk People's Republic. Males 18-60 can't show up on the street because they will be press ganged immediately. Some hide at home. Others live at their jobs and never leave the building. If you show up outside, you'll be recycled

Let me give you an example. A famous pianist from Donetsk was killed in action near Mariupol in April. How did he even get to the army? He was press-ganged and according to the unconfirmed info from the social media, press-ganged by a trick

Philharmonie was cheated!!! they were told to come to "record a nice video, and then go back home... but instead they were all taken in an unknown direction!!"

"We were told the same, they cheated us too. Opera, circus. Donbass"
"He was not a volunteer!!! Like all musicians!"

It's dangerous rhetoric because not being directly involved is what prevents us slipping into a world war

It is extraordinary that they think it is ok to sit there in the Black Sea, no one else allowed, shooting off deadly missile then to object if anyone else says, “Watch out for that war ship over there”

Pah - if they really thought that they'd be bombing New York. Not only are they now. They never will.

More bollockspeak. And frankly quite embarrassing from what used to be regarded as a superpower.

The only constant thing about this war has been the inverse relation between Russian ability and Russian threats. Truly they are the Wizard of Oz.

When Toto pulls back a curtain, the Wizard is revealed to be just an ordinary man

Well said.

I do wonder if because they are used to controlling the flow of information inside Russia that they can't comprehend that same control doesn't exist outside it.

There's a real naivety imho re: the eyes in the sky that they simply haven't factored into their war gaming.

It's possible to see what's unfolding in real time - what units are moving where, what assets are in play and fundamentally you can't hide war crimes by burying the bodies in mass graves that existed before the area was repatriated and say "it wasn't us guv".

Interesting piece that (sort of) makes sense of how and why the Nazi rhetoric is being mobilised.

Part of me thinks we should actually dig out the feldgrau and deaths head patches and turn up at the Russian border just to scare the shite out of Putin. (Is that pretty much Our Man In Havana ? Or Foucault's Pendulum ?)
