Do you think Putin made that statement after Liz Truss made her speech about how we should all give planes now to Ukraine? I have to say I’m not keen on Liz as she doesn’t seem very measured at all.

I wondered this. I think she's an idiot.

Sunnierdays · 27/04/2022 16:57

@YorkshireLondonMiss I think you may be right she’s seems out of her depth completely. She comes across as someone who is trying to hard to stay in the public eye , I know she has a key role but her job should be to try and defuse this situation not openly escalate it 🤐

Alexandra2001 · 27/04/2022 17:05

UK (and other) politicians should be careful of mouthing off "walk quietly but carry a big stick" comes to mind.

The UK has zero say in planes to Ukraine, we don't have MiG 29's, no airbases in the region and cannot back fill with Eurofighters as we don't have enough of our own.

I also thought Heapie's comments on uk providing longer range missiles to attck targets in Russia is just provocative as is all the stuff that we will beat Russia/make sure they can't do this again....

Doesn't need to be said, carry on doing as we are/up the supply etc but stop the shouting, achieves nothing, in fact all it does is solidify Russian resolve.

Wholly agree. I raise a brow at most things that have been said publicly tbh.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:12

@katem98 @Sunnierdays @Alexandra2001 completely agree. I don’t think James hs statement had any point what so ever to it other than to just inflame the situation. Moreover I’m not sure I agree with us saying that Russia’s bluster is dangerous when we seem to have been doing an awful lot of the same the past few days. I don’t get what purpose it serves at all. It just brings us down to their level. I’d feel much more confident if we had a measured approach, like how Austin responded to the nuclear war comments from Lavrov he just came across firm but sensible and in control rather than just throwing out aggression.

Thereisnolight · 27/04/2022 17:15

Oh how I agree. Some of them seem to think they are in Star Wars. Goodies vs baddies.

notimagain · 27/04/2022 17:15

Yep, there's a lot of noise being made by some people who seem to be working overtime trying to sound "hard" for the benefit of an electorate (both at a national and at party level).

Sometimes it is indeed best to quietly get on doing what can be done.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:17

@notimagain personally not after voting for someone who is “hard” would much rather someone who was tactful and not making me feel on edge constantly 🫣

Igotjelly · 27/04/2022 17:17

I’ve noticed how quiet Ben Wallace has been. I suspect this isn’t accidental and actually trust that he is working away in the background. More so than these other buffoons.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:20

@Igotjelly i hope so too. I’m getting pretty pissed off with the rest of them. I don’t get what the strategy is.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 27/04/2022 17:29

YorkshireLondonMiss I agree, her comments are unhelpful and extremely dangerous.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:31

In fact I’ll be honest, I’ve found today really difficult mentally. It’s been one of those days where I question why we are doing cancer research/trying to save lives when it feels a bit like we are hurtling towards anhilation. I’ve felt like this to be honest quite a lot throughout the war thinking about how the world has been trying to prevent deaths from covid for the past two years only for now for that to have been flipped on it’s head and so many lives be needlessly wasted. What was the point? Anyway that sounds really macabre but today has really got to me. I know we have to keep pushing on as normal but sometimes I just wonder what it’s all coming to.

What a clever little dog.

katem98 · 27/04/2022 17:35

@YorkshireLondonMiss You're not alone. I end up feeling like this most of the time too. I looked at my children yesterday and just started to cry. You'd think Liz Truss, having kids herself, would be a little bit more careful of how she's coming across and potentially escalating a situation.

Alexandra2001 · 27/04/2022 17:36

Well, he was the one that gobbed off that Putin had Gone Full Tonto! so perhaps not a great example to follow.

I think the only one who has talked any sense in all of this is Ellwood... if the powers that be had listened to him last year, its likely this war would never have started.

ScrollingLeaves · 27/04/2022 17:41

@YorkshireLondonMiss

but today has really got to me

I agree. And I agree with all the posters recently about the careless, hung-ho, aggressive talk.

I am getting the impression that there are acts being carried out all over the place. Including outside Ukraine with no one knowing who is doing what. We need someone very calm, extremely well-informed, and measured to be in control. Others should keep quiet.

Hubris is never good either.

Then there is the dreadful hell of the steel works. It feels dark.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:43

@katem98 yes sorry I know you’re anxious about this situation too. Hopefully it’s just more bluster from Putin, today has just been quite an escalatory day. We have been pushing the “boundaries” for a while now with sending weapons etc so perhaps this is just more subliminal line drawing from Russia. Ludicrous considering what they’re doing though.

Igotjelly · 27/04/2022 17:47

I genuinely think it’s just bluster, from both sides. Every decision taken by the west will be carefully considered and the response analysed. It all needs to be put on context too. Yesterday 40 nations met to discuss how to help Ukraine, Russia as a result must feel increasingly isolated and obviously isn’t doing as well as it had hoped in Ukraine. In essence they are now stamping their feet and shouting about how big their weapons are because they’re worried (in my view) and it’s the only thing they have that has even the slightest chance of swaying the West in its response.

katem98 · 27/04/2022 17:48

@YorkshireLondonMiss No need to apologise. It's just a crappy situation for all. As much as I hate to admit it, I do really think we should start taking threats a little more seriously. Putin has been seen to push a lot of blame for things on to the UK which I find quite worrying. As much as I really do hate what's happening in Ukraine, I think we really need to start thinking about how many more lives will be lost outside of Ukraine if he's continued to be further pushed into a corner.

Ijsbear · 27/04/2022 17:49

Personally I think that nothing Russia says should be paid attention to. They appear to be uncontrollable liars and I'm wondering why we twitch every time this trained manipulator makes a threat.

Going to leave any reacting to what they -say- and concentrate on what they do.

The only people who have any chance of getting anything worth listening to out of Putin and Lavrov are the US president and his aides. Even then I'm not sure it's got any value at all.

Cool heads that don't get scared at every threat that Putin makes, and don't want to go in gung ho, are needed.

And I'm afraid that the future for the people, including women, wounded and children, under the Steelworks is bleak. I think this has to be accepted, just as we accepted the thousands of deaths when Syria was bombed to smithereens and Grozny flattened.

Do what you can, give what you can to support Ukraine and then step away from the news for a while.

Igotjelly · 27/04/2022 17:50

Multiple sources have stated that they think the chance of Putin using tactical nukes is vanishingly small, and that will be based on actual evidence not just guesswork - remember how accurate all the intel was pre-invasion. If that’s the case for tactical nukes it’s going to be even more so for large intercontinental ones. But, in Russia’s view, it doesn’t hurt to try and threaten.

YorkshireLondonMiss · 27/04/2022 17:50

@ScrollingLeaves not that I’m a huge fan but boris came across quite well in his latest comments regarding what we were trying to do in terms of arming Ukraine. He also sort of bigged up Putin suggesting he’s so popular in Russia he has enough room to manoeuvre a withdrawal if he wanted to.

metro.co.uk/2022/04/27/boris-dismisses-nuclear-threat-after-russian-world-war-three-warning-16541557/amp/

not sure what people will have to say after putins outburst though today. I’m not sure what he means by interference either as everyone’s been interfering the whole time anyway. How are we meant to know what constitutes interference.

Sunnierdays · 27/04/2022 17:52

I still can’t get over that ridiculous comment Liz Truss made on national TV about supporting UK people wanting to fight in Ukraine. These politicians are suppose to be highly intelligent and have the best interests of the British people at heart 😂The woman has a mouth which is dangerous and she needs to consider her choice of words more carefully. I am worried about her speech tonight !
