Biden’ earth day tweet yesterday, probably nothing but in light of recent fires in Russia struck a chord,

On this Earth Day, I signed an Executive Order to strengthen our forests on federal lands and make them more resilient in the face of threats like wildfires.

It really struck me. Both in that regard but also in terms of the fact that humanity face so many challenges that we should be working together to solve, without needlessly adding to it

re Brexit it’s depressing how many people around me still don’t understand what they’ve done and still think bojo and crackden are worth voting for.

I thought this was an interesting Twitter thread about the significance of the Dmitrievsky chemical plant explosion. I have starting using Twitter since this thread started, thanks to links being shared here. This thread comes from within a thread by Trent Telenko. I am still working out who I think is worth following and am aware that there are all sorts of nutters out there ….

I've just read that France, Italy And German firm's all sold arms to Russia last month inspite of a ban since Crimea.
I just despair I really do.

HappyWinter · 23/04/2022 13:09

This isn't directly relevant to Ukraine but relevant to the global fallout. Article about the far reaching consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how it is going to affect developing countries due to higher food prices. It also talks about a debt crisis for developing countries. China has a lot of influence here as it owns as much as Western countries and often secures the loans against ports and natural resources, you can see how they are trying to increase their resources and power.

I just watched a very sad video on Bloomberg (on twitter) talking to evacuees who had just got off the bus from Mariupol, one lady said that she had watched Mariupol be built and become more beautiful and now it was dying Sad.

Odesa has been hit. 4 rockets. I've seen images but can't share. It's looks bad.

Igotjelly · 23/04/2022 13:35

Just heard from my friend in Kharkiv. Her dog was killed this morning on its walk by falling debris caused by bomb damage. She’s understandably absolutely devastated and says that walking her dog was one of the few “normal” things she still got pleasure from doing despite the war.

in other news curfew imposed between certain times each day in Lviv due to “new intelligence” - wonder what that is?

Zelensky: “The territory where it’s worth worrying about the ‘rights of Russian-speakers’ is Russia itself. Where there’s no freedom of speech, no free elections. Where poverty reigns and human life is worth nothing. Their dream now is to steal a toilet and then to die.”

The Ukrainian city of Odesa is under the shelling of the Russian troops. An apartment building is reportedly damaged, & civilians are hurt.

I'm so sorry for your friend and her poor dog Flowers.

I hope the situation in Odesa is ok, I've read it is a residential area (from Iuliia Mendel) but no further details.

Wtf?

How did they get round sanctions?

Is an armoured landrover a weapon of war, or for the police?

RedToothBrush · 23/04/2022 14:02

Its easter Sunday tomorrow. Its a big day in Ukraine. There has been talk that there will be a lot of attacks tonight / tomorrow to target civilians who may try to gather.

Possibly the reason for the Lviv curfew.

dibly · 23/04/2022 14:04

So sorry for your friend @Igotjelly, losing a dog is awful in any circumstances but can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be to lose one of your only sources of comfort during war 💔

I found this video on France

The story of how France used a loophole in an EU embargo to send weapons to Russia that are now being used against Ukraine

On Germany,

twitter.com/krides/status/1517621458880634880?t=wcOt8pEkZ_sOk01dIf-bLQ&s=19

It should be noted that, among other things, German companies are refusing to sell field rations to Ukrainian volunteers.

Food.

They are blocking food sales for Ukrainian soldiers. It’s beyond sabotage: it’s collaboration with the aggressor.

Lots of comments are asking for my source.

It is AT AKhadzhi from the Ukrainian humanitarian aid organization AT palyanytsyaorg on Poplava Show, a famous Ukrainian wartime radio hosted by AT olehbatkovych and AT saver_ag, where volunteers share their stories.

Specifically, the comment was given at 1:00:00. Rough translation:

"Look, we were looking into this issue [manufacturing of rations] because we faced the situation where there is nowhere to buy American and Israeli rations, the same goes for the French ones. We tried to..."

"...find German ones, which refused to sell the rations to us. It was the same story with Israel."

Later, she adds:

"Yes, if you had just seen the letter that I received as a reply to my request. I even made a request that said that my company was ready to buy.."

"...individual ingredients for the rations, and they refused to sell those to me as well."

AT saver_ag asks: "Is it because you are from the wrong country?"

She replies: "Yes, naturally, the way it was formulated was that for the time being, they cannot cooperate with Ukraine."

Today, I reached out to AT A_Khadzhi for a comment. She clarified:

"We received a refusal, where they stated that they will not deliver to Ukraine during the war. This was the exact statement."

She also told me that, after the show, people from the Ukrainian diaspora in Germany reached out and are helping resolve the issue.

The ultimate outcome is unclear. AT A_Khadzhi will report on that later. I'm hoping that they manage to convince the German company to sell us food.

For obvious reasons, no one will name the company while the negotiations are ongoing.

I just want to add it's baffling to me that so many people doubted my original tweet. This is a widespread occurrence, self-evident to any Ukrainian volunteer.

This is something Ukrainian volunteers face constantly: German companies and authorities routinely refuse to sell and transport any and all aid when they learn that it is going to Ukraine.

We have been inventing clever schemes to go around Germany since day 1 of this war.

It's even the case that when something for the Ukrainian army is bought in another country, it's often risky to transport it through the territory of Germany because the shipment might get arrested or delayed.

This thread isn't an isolated case.

If someone qualified wants to write an article about this German sabotage, I have a contact list full of sources for you.

Do it Right AT sonia_weisman
It's not just on political level. When we wanted to buy hiking shoes and backpacks from private companies (natürlich for our army),we received a refusal citing that was the order from the above.
Just decide on which side you are because you are not neutral

Keep an eye on this story developing.

Germany supplied weapons around sanctions, won't stop buying Russian fuel, keeps saying it will supply arms to Ukraine but doesn't or makes excuses and then won't sell food to Ukrainian volunteers.

That doesn't look pro Ukraine. It doesn't even look neutral.

Ijsbear · 23/04/2022 14:26

Christ. Germany's attitude is appalling.

Is an armoured landrover a weapon of war, or for the police?

I see. So these firms are splitting hairs to avoid coming within the scope of the sanctions even though there is a likelihood that vehicles for the Russian police will be used by Russian military in the war.

How very cynical. I wonder whether those countries will actually enforce their sanctions against these companies (or at least take them to court).
