Get well soon @TargusEasting

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 10/04/2022 22:11

That was a very big explosion. Any detail on it? 🙈 Isn't that basically next door to Odesa? They were expecting attacks today.

TiddyTidTwo · 10/04/2022 22:11

Targus ❤️

What causes an explosion like that. It's huge. Thermobaric?

DuncinToffee · 10/04/2022 22:17

Euromaidan PR just tweeted

Mykolaiv updates: It was not blast, Ukraine's air defence intercepted russian missile - official. via Vitaliy Kim
The wreckage of the Russian missile caused the fire; it was extinguished at 23:30pm - Vitality Kim

PestorPeston · 10/04/2022 22:20

Blast from different angle twitter.com/Worldsource24/status/1513260155584065544

PestorPeston · 10/04/2022 22:25

Well Duncin, I'm going to have to disagree with Vitality Kim. That was a blast, a very big one. Might well be an intercepted missile. Definitely a blast though.

DuncinToffee · 10/04/2022 22:29

That's fine with me Pestor, I am only re-tweeting Smile
Can't find a lot of info at the moment

TiddyTidTwo · 10/04/2022 22:32

Me neither Duncin. By Twitter standard updates very slow!

South of mikoliav? Unconfirmed though

Igotjelly · 10/04/2022 22:38

It did look similar to the Beirut explosion (to my highly untrained eye)

PaperTyger · 10/04/2022 22:41

Targus, hope you feel better soon

Re pirates that's exactly what the oligarchs are,I did start to call them pirates a few thread back.

PaperTyger · 10/04/2022 22:54

Tiddy that's an horrific explosion! Dreadful

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 10/04/2022 22:55

I showed DH the footage of the explosion and he said the light blast was unusually long and in his opinion could have 2 causes. The first, which he ruled out instantly was a nuke. He ruled it out as he would have been contacted immediately if that were the case (nuclear scientist). The second is a something called a fuel air blast, which is where something incendary is spread through the air and then a second device ignites it. Thermobaric bombs do this but it's also possible that it occured by accident if the report about taking out a missile is correct.

PaperTyger · 10/04/2022 22:56

Bring back, thank you!

TiddyTidTwo · 10/04/2022 23:33

Thanks Bringback. The knowledge available on this thread is incredible.

MagicFox · 11/04/2022 06:35

Wow, thanks for this info @BringBackCoffeeCreams

Igotjelly · 11/04/2022 07:37

Yes @BringBackCoffeeCreams very interesting thank you! Not much about the blast in the press this morning.

What is being reported is that Finland and Sweden could join NATO as early as summer 2022, that should please Putin.

Wow, a quick update from Vitaliy Kim, Governor of #Mykolaiv. He now confirmed my info - missiles did hit to a Qatari business. This can only be Olvia, which I reported last night, and it now seems v likely saltpeter was stored there causing the huge blast

Igotjelly · 11/04/2022 09:11

What is saltpeter?

Igotjelly · 11/04/2022 09:14

Ah Google has informed me it’s potassium nitrate

FatCatThinCat · 11/04/2022 09:15

@Igotjelly

What is saltpeter?
Dunno. I'll ask DH about it when he's finished his meeting. (I'm BringBackCoffeeCreams but can't change my user name on my phone for some reason)
Igotjelly · 11/04/2022 09:25

Google then goes on to tell me it’s a key component of gun powder. Got to love the internet at times 😂

Motorina · 11/04/2022 09:27

Potassium Nitrate, Sodium Nitrate, or Calcium Nitrate. Gunpowder is made up of carbon, sulfur and saltpetre. It's also used in fertilizers.

As a kid (when the world was different...) we used to make DIY bangs out of fertiliser and flour. Happy days...

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 11/04/2022 09:28

@Igotjelly

What is saltpeter?
Fertiliser.

Or explosive. Depends.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 11/04/2022 10:03

Dh says he doesn't believe that explosiion to be a missile hitting a saltpeter store. He says saltpeter is used in explosives but isn't explosive by itself. It has to mixed with other components in advance and then ignited. He says it's impossible to tell on the evidence available what the actual mechanism of the explosion is (could be thermodynamic bomb, intercepting a missile or something else) but the actual explosion itself appears to be caused by something igniting vapour in the air. ie a fuel air blast.
