I find it very distressing and I'm in a safe place.

can that money be got in a usable cash form? Sorry to understand so little: are there cash points?

The Ukrainian banking system is still operating there, or at least card payments are. I send some food money every three days or so. Via PayPal to her PayPal. She draws it down onto her debit card and uses it to buy bread etc. at the nearby store. There might be an ATM there too. In this area there has been no conversion to Roubles. The Hryvnia still applies, however some of the inflation might be caused by anticipating the currency possibly being withdrawn in the area as well as scarcity?

Ukraine is not a rich country but someone in their mid-20s will often have an iPhone and do electronic banking / use bank cards.

Image is of an assessment of the current front lines. If you go East from Kherson on the South side of the river, they are about half way to where it is dammed, so roughly North of the Russian forces kite symbol.

I need to work. I'll check this thread later today.

Quoting and agreeing or as ScrollingLeaves says 'he believes in'.

Is anywhere "safe" ? You'd have though Salisbury couldn't be more safe and yet the Russians got away with murder there.

Igotjelly · 08/04/2022 13:45

I know they aren’t to be trusted but Reuters reporting that Dmitry Peskov suggesting that Russian’s operation in Ukraine could end in the “foreseeable future”

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 08/04/2022 13:48

Why aren't Reuters to be trusted?

Igotjelly · 08/04/2022 13:50

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Why aren't Reuters to be trusted?
I mean the Russians in what they say (in this instance Peskov)
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 08/04/2022 13:52

Oh ok, that makes sense.

BREAKING NEWS - ukraine willing to hold talks in Turkey despite Bucha- reports Turkish official

DuncinToffee · 08/04/2022 14:00

More lies exposed

Max Seddon
Russia’s defense ministry claims it doesn’t have the Tochka-U missiles used in the horrific rocket attack on Kramatorsk today.

But just weeks ago they were boasting about using them in exercises just before the war.

Not even bothering to find a good excuse

RedToothBrush · 08/04/2022 14:01

Liberal Nazis. The West is going to be taken over by liberal nazis.

Holding talks is a great way to know what your enemy is planning if you can eavesdrop on the communication (or lack thereof ....) between the negotiators and their backers.

Pictures from the scene of this morning's rocket attack at Kramatorsk railway station in eastern Ukraine. 39 people are believed to have died. There's a claim that one of these rockets has "For the children" written on it. @BBCJoeInwood has just got there

The Mayor of #Chernihiv says about 700 people were killed during the battle for the city in northern #Ukraine.

Vladislav Atroshenko says that includes troops and civilians. He added "another 70 bodies remain unrecognised, and 40 people are missing."

Ijsbear · 08/04/2022 14:09

If that's true ... all this is just going to inflame the West.

Alexandra2001 · 08/04/2022 14:11

Thought i was beyond being shocked by what these Russian xxxx's will do but Sky showing the air burst missile, with the Russian words "For the Children" written on it.

Russia claiming Ukraine fired on itself.

These people are absolute scum and we can never ease sanctions until Putin is gone and the people who ordered and carried out the attack are on trial.

In all fairness translators have been quick to point out that the way it’s written actually translates to something along the lines of for the children in terms of retribution for the children killed (or claimed to be killed, by Ukraine).

Peter Jukes @peterjukes
I always used to argue with [former] Polish girlfriend Hitler was worse than Stalin. She disagreed: Stalin’s terrors lasted longer. She texted me a few weeks ago, just after Putin started his Stalinist strategy in Ukraine to say ‘See. I was right’. I now find it hard to disagree

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 08/04/2022 14:21

This. It doesn't mean it's aimed at children, it means it's retribution for them.

Doesn't make it any better though.

Ijsbear · 08/04/2022 14:29

When aimed at the railway station where there are hundreds and hundreds of women and children hoping to flee - it's vicious.

I wonder if our pet shills have any shame at all, or if they are as dead inside as Putin is.

Are there Russian children in Ukraine?

Stop defending these monsters, either way, its irrelevant.

Alexandra ... They are still human. What the Russians are doing, what the US troops did in My Lai, what happened in Syria .. these people are doing what people at almost their worst do.

It's part of what we are capable of, unfortunately.

Ijsbear · 08/04/2022 14:37

from the ISW:

Key Takeaways

Russian forces claim to have successfully captured central Mariupol, but Ukrainian forces retain control of the port southwest of the city. Russian forces will likely complete the capture of Mariupol in the coming days.
Russian forces are setting conditions for a major offensive in eastern Ukraine in the coming days, but damaged units redeployed from northeastern Ukraine are unlikely to enable a successful Russian breakthrough.
Ukrainian forces repelled continuing Russian attacks from Izyum southeast toward Slovyansk and Barvinkove.
Russian and Belarusian forces are conducting “demonstrative actions” to fix Ukrainian forces around Kyiv in place. However, these units are highly unlikely to launch new offensive operations, and Ukrainian units around Kyiv can likely safely redeploy to eastern Ukraine.
Western sanctions are likely successfully disrupting Russia’s military-industrial base.
Saltedeggplant · 08/04/2022 14:39

Unless you know what was going through the mind of the person who wrote it, you don't know.
You can tell from the words used, as people are pointing out.
Its also not defending to correct translations etc, with how much fake stuff there is, misinformation, it's important to get things correct, not just because it's important to have things correct, but also what it means and leads to, they're ramping up the narrative that this is a mission of saving/revenge for Russians.

PestorPeston · 08/04/2022 14:45

The Ukrainians wanted to claim borscht as theirs and only theirs and didn’t want to share with others. This, says Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, is “xenophobia, extremism and nazism.”
From Ukraine World

I'm making borscht, to a Ukrainian recipe, I am responsible for WW3 and a fascist.

Igotjelly · 08/04/2022 14:47

@Alexandra2001 100% not defending, simply pointing out that linguistically it doesn’t read strictly as ‘for children’ in terms of intended to kill children.
