There was a brief flurry of squirrelism here, with (some) poster( s ?) insisting we devote valuable time and resources on researching Angela Merkels political career instead of trying to address the future.

I'm not sure what squirrelism means, but surely it would be helpful to understand now we got into this to be able to address the future? Of course Angela Merkel is relevant to the current position of German dependency on Russia and their position.

Wow, a Belarusian group received data from some "неравнодушные люди" (i.e. hackers or internal leakers from SDEK) that identified the people who used this parcel delivery service to return loot back to Russia. Included are names, phone, and items delivered^

Ukraine’s marines deny their troops have surrendered en masse to Russia in Mariupol … this is in relation to the video doing the rounds yesterday apparently showing that 250+ marines surrendered.

Apparently the DR are holding a £700m oligarchs yacht at their port to be handed over to the US.

We shouldn't have sat and watched that build up peace keeping forces should have gone in to hold that's border and protect Nuclear sites

I don't think it matters whether I spend a minute, and hour or a lifetime thinking about Angela Merkel and the past 20 years. It will only result in the same conclusion :

Don't buy gas from Russia

What is the best short, medium and long-term outcome for this war (that we want to see)?

For me:
Short: Russian withdrawal from Ukraine. It can be as a peace agreement, frozen conflict or settlement, but Ukraine keeps the their independence. For that to happen, we need to make the costs of war hurt Russia more than offering peace. I have no idea what, but we are only a month into this disaster and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Medium: bolster Nato security around the ex-soviet states and starve Russia of the funding and supply chains they need to wage war. Of course, in turn, we have the problem that China and India will support Russia instead - but that's why we have diplomats and treaties.

Long term - change the mafia system and mindset that makes war more profitable for Russia than peace. To achieve that, you need to get rid of the corrupt kleptocracy. To remove them, you need to remove a key source of their wealth (oil + gas) which means the world weaning off fossil fuels. If you can't dig the stuff out of the ground, you need to sell something else that requires human input. Kamil Galeev makes this point when he talks about 'mafia avocados'' on twitter.
