Semantle thread 4 is almost full and there's still plenty of love (and hate 🤣) for the game, so here's a new thread for Sunday's game.

If you're lucky enough not to know what I'm on about Semantle is a word game like Wordle. You need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics, not letters. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

If you want to join in the fun follow this link and prepare to lose your sanity.

If you want to see how we've been getting on up to now our previous thread is here. We tend to use the threads to rant about how we're getting nowhere, celebrate our successes and laugh about the previous day's top 1000 but please, no spoilers. Subtle hints only here; use DMs for more obvious clues.

Enjoy!

@Donatella, you've taken the same path that I did. Think more generally, they are all a type of xxx.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2022 09:00

@Donatella

Aargh, stuck on 995 again. I also have 976 and 877, any ideas which of these would be most helpful? I'm really stuck for ideas as to what might be similar to 995.

I did have one guess which doesn't have a rank, just ??? and a similarity of 36.72 which puts it between my 976 and 877, what does that mean?

995 doesn't really fit particularly well imo. The other two are a rather less obvious specific type of a very generic category. Think a bit away from those.

Whoops wrong pic - this is today’s

I know there are two meanings - but the 800s and 900s are very thematically different when I would have thought the two meanings might have balanced better across the piece.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 22/03/2022 09:03

Aah yes Bower that path would have completely thrown me.
I got to 879 on guess 8 and it didn't take long from there (the answer is pertinent to me). I'm annoyed I did it quickly though, I'm not in work till 12 😤

SheilaFentiman · 22/03/2022 09:12

I think there’s some of both in both 800s and 900s. It makes no sense to me that 938 is closer than 889, say

Donatella · 22/03/2022 09:12

See, my 800s and 900s are thematically the same! And I'm struggling to think of any other words in that theme

ChuckBerrysBoots · 22/03/2022 09:13

I solved Semantle #52 in 166 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.21. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #30. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 28.42 (475/1000).

How very, very annoying 😆

poppym12 · 22/03/2022 09:14

I solved Semantle #52 in 66 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 4.27. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #16. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 24.84. semantle.novalis.org/. I was going round in circles with this one!

DifferentDrum · 22/03/2022 09:22

Mmm, I've read all the cryptic clues on here but still can't get further than 990 and dozens of synonyms and related words (969, 968, 963, 932 to name just a few), but I feel like maybe I'm on the wrong track....any clues??

It's a very generic word for these sorts of things, and it's got another completely different broad generic meaning!
ElegantlyTouched · 22/03/2022 09:29

@HadEnoughOfBears

I solved Semantle #52 in 33 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 12.18. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #2. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 11.24. semantle.novalis.org/

It's difficult to help people when you get it quickly because you don't have a big list of green ones to compare with them.

Once you've solved it you can follow the link to the full word list.

The exact ranking isn't accurate.
HoundOfTheBasketballs · 22/03/2022 09:33

Tricky today, but got there quite logically. And I didn't have to come to this thread for a hint!

I solved Semantle #52 in 99 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 20.54. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #5. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 6.97. semantle.novalis.org/

DifferentDrum · 22/03/2022 09:35

Thanks to @errolthedragon for another excellent clue. Got it in 2 after that!

I solved Semantle #52 in 162 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.99. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #3. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 9.75. semantle.novalis.org/

ChuckBerrysBoots · 22/03/2022 09:41

As soon as you get the word it seems so obvious but at the time when you’re firing off brain farts into the word box it might as well be in a foreign language

AliasGrape · 22/03/2022 09:54

Fuck me, this might be my worst one yet - I’ve tried not to look at any clues and it definitely shows. Rapidly approaching 300 guesses and these are my only greens - all of which are particularly unhelpful.

Short of pointing at random to words in the dictionary and trying those, I’m not really sure where to go next.

I’m going to have to have a clue if possible, much as I hate it.

Words are my thing! You wouldn’t think it but I’m meant to be reasonably intelligent (well maybe I was pre baby anyway), and yet I start this game and suddenly have the linguistic abilities of your average spaniel. I hate it, every day I say I’m not playing again yet here I am Confused

AliasGrape · 22/03/2022 09:55

That was meant to have a picture - my only greens, hard won and seemingly bloody useless

Semantle 5
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 22/03/2022 09:56

Fuck me, first guess was 350...since then nothing even close. What the hell?

AliasGrape · 22/03/2022 10:03

Ok the old post a rant and then flash of inspiration trick sort of worked, in as much as I now have 849 as well, though no idea how that fits with anything else
Saisong · 22/03/2022 10:08

849 is not a particularly useful clue, although it is a sort of synonym for one meaning (the word had at least two distinct meanings).

If you were 849ing something you might be practicing a xxx

InMySpareTime · 22/03/2022 10:11

@AliasGrape someone with a beard doing 622 is called?

AliasGrape · 22/03/2022 10:14

Oh my goodness the post and then get inspired thing does actually work, jumped to 879 and then got it Grin

Feel like 879 should be higher actually!

And really I only got 879 because I typed a longer word that rhymes with it, then thought why not try that.

This game is so strange.

I solved Semantle #52 in 307 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 22.79. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #24. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 14.99. semantle.novalis.org/

AliasGrape · 22/03/2022 10:15
@AliasGrape someone with a beard doing 622 is called?
Haha that’s a brilliant clue, I’d just got it but would definitely have got there from that I think, well I might have tried ‘wanker’ first Grin

SouperNoodle · 22/03/2022 10:27

I solved Semantle #52 in 109 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.04. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #20. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 59.96 (999/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Complete fluke but I did it!!
