Semantle thread 4 is almost full and there's still plenty of love (and hate 🤣) for the game, so here's a new thread for Sunday's game.

If you're lucky enough not to know what I'm on about Semantle is a word game like Wordle. You need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics, not letters. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

68 guesses and I have one green (505).

Is that green a curveball or is it related to other greens in a way I haven’t thought of yet?

None of the obvious connections to 505 seem to work!

Connected in a roundabout way... but mostly a curveball.

How are you all getting it so quickly? My highest so far is 652 after 140 guesses. This is driving me mad.

Edwin, I would definitely not get to the answer from 505.

I’ve got 371 and 436 so far

I got 453 early on, and before that some of my warmer colds, so not green but close, were along that line, so I’ve just fired out about 40 more related guesses all of which were cold.

I then got 505 and another 20 guesses later still colder than a cold thing.

I find it really hard with the lower greens because my mind fixates on them even when they’re clearly not leading anywhere.

I know what you mean. I’ve now got 879 and 888 which does broaden it out but I can’t get any purchase. All related things go nowhere.

Double, those two are good words, especially 888

It's difficult to help people when you get it quickly because you don't have a big list of green ones to compare with them.

879 is nearly there, I got it from 879 with no higher words

Quite quick for me today, jumped to 990 as my first green and then a bit of fumbling around got me there. I think I prefer having it to play for a few hours even though that often irritates me! Now it's back to reality.

I solved Semantle #52 in 39 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 18.81. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #26. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 33.37 (827/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Slightly unexpected since I hadnt got anything in the 900s.

I solved Semantle #52 in 76 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.31. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #17. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 6.67. semantle.novalis.org/

Found after just five greens (260, 312, 505, 555, 879).

I solved Semantle #52 in 74 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.86. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #12. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 29.27 (555/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #52 in 9 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 11.89. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #7. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 23.38. semantle.novalis.org/

I got it quickly because one of my normal opening round of words is 879 so this was just my exploration from there.

Well, that was unexpected. I got 260, 156, then suddenly 990!

There are definitely 2 major routes to the solution, irl 990 would have been my preferred means!

I think the problem with lower greens is sometimes they’re incredibly close to the answer, and sometimes you need to abandon them and think differently eg if word 400 is “dog” you might need to try eg “farm” rather than cat.

Looking at the 900s it’s really hard to see how the 800s relate! They seem to be heading in two different directions.

Aargh, stuck on 995 again. I also have 976 and 877, any ideas which of these would be most helpful? I'm really stuck for ideas as to what might be similar to 995.

I did have one guess which doesn't have a rank, just ??? and a similarity of 36.72 which puts it between my 976 and 877, what does that mean?

Yes, sometimes you need to try some rather generic loosely related words rather than more specific ones. 962 intersects both themes!

Quick here too, started on a specific path and got to a logical conclusion quickly. Suppose I have to do some work now!
