Semantle thread 4 is almost full and there's still plenty of love (and hate 🤣) for the game, so here's a new thread for Sunday's game.

If you're lucky enough not to know what I'm on about Semantle is a word game like Wordle. You need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics, not letters. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I solved Semantle #52 in 72 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.31. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #28. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 42.30 (983/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Took me far too long to get this. The greens I had were something I know a lot about. This led me on a narrow mindset, needed to think more broadly!

So many greens but not getting any further. Am I on the right track at least please?

Well that was an easier day. Just one green and then I got it!
I solved Semantle #52 in 30 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.37. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #24. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 24.16. semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #52 in 173 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.19. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #4. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 29.27 (555/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Sort of disappointed as I just got it by random fluke. I had some low greens getting me nowhere for ages. Did some random guesses and got 879 completely unconnected to them. Starting working around 879 and it was one of the first words I tried relating to that. Off to examine the list now...

I solved Semantle #52 in 221 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 4.18. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #45. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 28.74 (508/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I made hard work of that by going off on the object route, rather than the process route.

Well, after yesterday’s annoyance, this was much more straightforward.

I solved Semantle #52 in 66 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.52. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #36. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 37.60 (932/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

@squirrelnutkins1 I think you’re coming at it from the same route I did. 990 was my first green, then I got a good few lower ones before I hit on the answer. I think looking at both routes, the way forward is to generalise rather than specialise!

Today is a tough one

Took 75 guesses before I even got a green… is there some sort of strategy that I’m unaware of?

Got there in the end . Didn't get any of the top 100 but on looking at the words don't think they would have helped at all.

Lucky today, got the word in a very different train of thought to what the word is usually associated with!

Got it in 54. Ended up on the less helpful route (to me) so wasted a lot of guesses.

I solved Semantle #52 in 81 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 13.87. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #17. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.57 (784/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #52 in 50 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.61. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #13. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 33.37 (827/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I got 990 really quickly but faffed about with different types for ages. If I had got any words from the other route I don’t know if I would have been mightily confused or if it would have been a good clue.

Well, that was unexpected. I got 260, 156, then suddenly 990!

How are you all getting it so quickly? My highest so far is 652 after 140 guesses. This is driving me mad.

I didn’t have any in the 900s, so I’m surprised I got it (though the 900s do seem to be a particularly specific theme on the word, doesn’t make sense to me that they were more commonly linked to the answer than the lower down ones I was on).

68 guesses and I have one green (505).

Is that green a curveball or is it related to other greens in a way I haven’t thought of yet?

None of the obvious connections to 505 seem to work!

Actually I’m really thick, I’ve just realised why lots of the 900s are linked to the answer. Not as random as I thought. Slow brain day.
