Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

@KloppsTeeth

I love that others have mentioned epitome too! For me, I have been reading it in my head as “eppy tome” forever, as it is a legit word as well as epitome that I will say outloud correctly. I only found out there weren’t two different words meaning the same thing when I was 40! Grin
Oh yes I always thought it was eppytome until I did the Legal Practice Course at college Grin

but honestly, how would you know a lot of these if you didn't work in the sector or had never heard it?

berlinbabylon · 19/03/2022 19:01

I deliberately wind up ds by saying me-me for meme :)

flashpaper · 19/03/2022 19:01

Wait, have I been pronouncing Skelmersdale wrong? We don't live too far from there, so I guess I just say Skem!

ImustLearn2Cook · 19/03/2022 19:04

Quinoa has been mentioned a few times and that is a word I continue to mispronounce.

I have pronounced it as it's spelt for years. Last year a friend corrected me and told me that quinoa is pronounced keen-wa.

I didn’t believe them and said that can’t be right. But I googled it and it’s true.

Every time I read the word quinoa I still hear it the way I had always pronounced it, because that feels right. Keen-wa just feels wrong.

felineweird · 19/03/2022 19:08

Wait, what? Incognito isn't pronounced 'in-cog-nee-toe'?! Like incognito tab on a device? 😱

ImustLearn2Cook · 19/03/2022 19:09

I have to say that's how I say it!

Thought of another Scottish placename out to get us - Anstruther.

As for Sunny Skem, I didn't think you pronounced the L in the long version.

1Logan1 · 19/03/2022 19:15

My worst pronunciation was asking A question on trivial pursuit about Galypolly, friend still goes on about it yet 😳 my daughter's was Gee o pardy , ( Jeopardy)

foxlover47 · 19/03/2022 19:19

@RaininSummer that's brilliant that's made me proper laugh that the assistant did that 😀😂😂😂😂

felineweird · 19/03/2022 19:21

I have googled and incognito really is pronounced 'in cog nee toe' it's originally Latin. In situ is something else I think? Unless I am totally nuts (which is more than possible tbh Grin)

starfishmummy · 19/03/2022 19:21

@Fatarseflanagan09

I said epitome wrong and felt a right nob, I’d been saying it wrong for ages, I’m sure there are more.
I remember DH laughing his head off at me for eppy-toam. I actually have good pronunciation - honest - but epitome was a word I had read but which had never cropped up in conversation
Qwill · 19/03/2022 19:22

@MatildaJayne

“Qwill
‘My MIL says gillet as in fillet for gilet 🤦🏼‍♀️‘

Oh god I do this too! How do you pronounce them then? I say them as jeelay and feelay.
@Qwill, are you American by any chance? Jee lay, with a shj is how I’d pronounce gilet in the French way, but a fillet steak in the UK is pronounced fill it with no French pretentions!”

😂 not as far as I’m aware (I am half French so that’s probably the issue)!! I read it as filet as in filet mignon! I do say fill-et as in to fillet a fish. Think my eyes ignored the double ‘t’!

ThatsNotMyGolem · 19/03/2022 19:23

There's a suburb of Liverpool called Fazakerley, which I used to call "Fazzaccarelli", as if it was Italian 😓😂

foxlover47 · 19/03/2022 19:25

Gillet I never like saying aloud , my dd is almost 10
And wanted one for riding , I didn't want to ask in store so ordered online .. always feel such a bellend saying it as never know the correct pronunciation

midsomermurderess · 19/03/2022 19:33

Dundee United play at Tannadice (Tanna Dice), pronounced many years ago by a commentator as if it was a suburb of Rome.

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 19:34

OP. I'm from Yorkshire and I do say Poo-er, moo-er and too-er. Poor, moor and tour. I don't say 'cort' for coat though, that's not something I've heard in my particular neck of the woods.

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 19:35

Great thread BTW

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 19:37

I also say one pronounced like gone and not as in won.

Bytrgrewd · 19/03/2022 19:41

You know those peas you get in the pod? Well I’ve been pronouncing the as if they’re French “mange tout” and only just found out it’s “MAN GET OUT”
Wink

Sherrystrull · 19/03/2022 19:41

I thought vehemently was veeHEMently for years!

GetOffTheTableMabel · 19/03/2022 19:43

I once pronounced Beauchamp Place as Bo-Shom Place in front of someone who delighted in telling me that it is Bee-Cham Place.

I also realised in my late 20s that I had been pronouncing minutiae as min-you-tie, when it should be my-new-she-eye. I had used it in important meetings.

MatildaJayne · 19/03/2022 19:44

@Qwill, no pretentions if you’re half French!

@Nightdancer, I pronounce one, gone and won all the same! Confused

Terfydactyl · 19/03/2022 19:45

I read celeriac before hearing it and said celery-ac

I daren't ask, but ok how is it said?
Sell air ee ac?

TheBearAndThePiano · 19/03/2022 19:46

quay. I can just about manage if its on it's own as it 'a quay' if I stop and pause, but in a longer word I say kway. New-kway. Tor-kway.

Bytrgrewd · 19/03/2022 19:46

I did have to ask my mum recently the correct pronunciation of “banal”. I was like is it pronounced like canal or erm anal 😆
It’s more like canal apparently but not quite
