Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

posthumously

I've had to Google how to even spell it because it's post-humusly in my head and saying it takes a few goes

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 19/03/2022 16:35

remuneration as renumeration
In my mind, it is related to numbers so made sense to me. Kept seeing it written "wrong" and then the penny dropped.

2020in2020 · 19/03/2022 16:35

I pronounced “misled” as “My-zuld” had only ever seen it written down and not said out loud before! My family never let me live it down and now we always say it that way Grin

Mamamia7962 · 19/03/2022 16:35

Quinoa - I pronounced this as it's spelt. Wasn't until I saw an advert for it that I realised I was completely wrong.

Beachsidesunset · 19/03/2022 16:35

Freddie Mercury sings 'Mo-way et Chandon' in Killer Queen, so maybe that's where your DP got it from! The maker is Dutch, where the 't' is pronounced, so 'Mo-et' is correct.

Lichen.

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2022 16:40

I know it's Fanshaw and Beaver Castle. Kai-us??

Daftasabroom · 19/03/2022 16:40

I say digital as gigital, both gs having the same j sound.

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2022 16:40
Blush
Mamette · 19/03/2022 16:41

DM’s cousin pronounced “epitome” as “eppy tome” repeatedly while reviewing a book on prime time tv. It was about 40 years ago but DM still crows about it.

As a child I read “chaos” as “chowse”. I used to wonder why chowse was always happening in books but never in real life.

SpacePotato · 19/03/2022 16:41

I still say hyperbowl for hyperbole (high per ber lee) because it annoys DPGrin

PriamFarrl · 19/03/2022 16:41

Hey, if Freddy Mercury says moway then I will too.

Glorieta · 19/03/2022 16:43

Belvoir = beever
Caius = keys
Featherstonehaugh = fanshaw

Thunderpunt · 19/03/2022 16:43

Incognito is one, I always pronounced in in-cog-neeto... although to be fair that's probably because people it's the anglicised version of a forrin word innit

My mum did this one too as a child.

She also pronounced divan as die-van.

I work for a solicitor whose first language is not English. He comes out with some crackers!

Funkyslippers · 19/03/2022 16:46

I thought invigilate was pronounced inviligate. OH found it funny and also finds my pronunciation of ventriloquist as ventroloquist amusing. I've since corrected both but nobody corrected me before!

WeirdArchitecture · 19/03/2022 16:47

You should never mock/be mocked about mispronunciations - it means you've read more than you've watched. Good for you!

Pythonesque · 19/03/2022 16:50

As a child I had only ever read etiquette and managed to mangle it in my head so badly that when I used it in a game of hangman in an end of term English lesson in yr 7 or 8, I told people guessing the right word that they were wrong ...
