Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

Sell AIR ee ac, yes.

MatildaJayne · 19/03/2022 19:49

Ban AHL, whereas canal is more can AL.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/03/2022 19:50

@berlinbabylon but Anstruther is correct though isn’t it? I thought Ainster was just a nickname used by locals rather than a correct pronunciation and they would say Anstruther when talking about it more formally. Also why don’t I know for sure, I spent a week there last summer 🙈

Coldingham residents use the old Cowjum nickname too.

Thanks. In my head it always rhymes with anal 🤦‍♀️

When I was a child reading the Harry Potter books (before the films) I thought Hermione was pronounced her-me-own. It took me a long time to get used to her as her-my-oh-nee

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 19:52

@MatildaJayne how? 🤣 I can't grasp the way you say them.

For me, I say one and it rhymes with gone and don.

Some people say it and it rhymes with won, pun and tonne.

How do you say all 3 and they sound the same? Surely if you said 'one' and it rhymed with 'won', then you pronounce gone as gun?

@2020in2020

I pronounced “misled” as “My-zuld” had only ever seen it written down and not said out loud before! My family never let me live it down and now we always say it that way Grin
Same here, we say my zuld. Also awry I pronounce as all ree. Basically that's how it's written. I heard an announcer on Radio 5live mispronounce hyper bole and was delighted that someone professional got it wrongGrin
impossible · 19/03/2022 19:53

I have trouble with prosecco - I pronounce it like prosciutto (the ham) and although I know better I can't help it.
Also guacamole - it comes out something like guacamala. I call it guac now - easier but somehow embarrassing.

Howareyouflower · 19/03/2022 19:53

When I was a teenager my boyfriend told me that his best friend used to try to impress girls by lying and telling them that his father was Lord Montague of Beulieu. Only he gave himself away by saying "Bow-lee-o" !

Metabigot · 19/03/2022 19:55

@YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators

remuneration as renumeration In my mind, it is related to numbers so made sense to me. Kept seeing it written "wrong" and then the penny dropped.
I see what you did there....

The US state of Nevada is pronounced Neh-Vah-Dah not Ner-Var-dar

impossible · 19/03/2022 19:59

Also remingues instead of meringues.

And I was asked by an American the way to Looberoo (Loughborough).

sweetbellyhigh · 19/03/2022 20:08

Took me years to connect the written word miniseries with the short TV series genre.

Thought it was ma-nizza-reez like misery

And segue is all wrong. I once had a v pretentious colleague who managed to work segue into virtually every conversation which was the one thing I learned from him.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/03/2022 20:09

I was embarrassingly old when I realised espresso had no x although in my defence I don’t drink coffee.

I read The Catcher in the Rye when I was far younger than it’s target audience but the thing that confused me most was the name Phoebe, in my head it was pronounced Foe-bee. A deaf friend recently made the same mistake.

I once referred to Guiseppe Verdi as Goose-eep Verdee. I thought my Dad was going to die laughing

NeedAHoliday2021 · 19/03/2022 20:14

Dh pronounces rant in a way that rhymes with aunt. He’s adamant I’m wrong but I’ve never heard anyone else say it like that. Might now learn I’m wrong - I’m sure someone will tell me.

Phew, I got one right

Quick story.
When young I stayed at my grandparents quite often, my grandad was the loveliest man ever and nothing was too much hassle for him. Only child so read a lot of books and readers digests and stuff not really suitable for my age ( I realise in Hindsight) I was reading a grown up book and came across "honeycomb " try as I might I could not make it make sense. So eventually grandad came home from work and I asked him how to say it. He told me obviously, then looked at the book I was reading and went slightly gray. I never saw the book again and I dont recall the name but evidently it wasnt suitable.

Kirkcaldy is Kir caw di

Kirkcaldy is a very pretty place. I was there last year, got a sort of artisty vibe.

Loveletters123 · 19/03/2022 20:21

My daughter was recently learning about hyperboles in English and I thought it was pronounced like hyper bowls! Then I twigged that I had heard that word said a different way but never seen it written down. And I am currently studying English at degree level!

RAOK · 19/03/2022 20:21

@Fatarseflanagan09

I said epitome wrong and felt a right nob, I’d been saying it wrong for ages, I’m sure there are more.
Me too!

GIF was actually supposed to be pronounced JIF according to its creator, although everyone seems to use a hard g sound now

Reading class literature book aloud at school I pronounced ‘antipodes’
