Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

Sliver
(I.e cut my a sliver of cake)

In my head its Slither and Sliver sounds like a mispronounciation!

Nothingclever · 25/03/2022 07:49

I regularly go to a place called Killin with friends. Doesn’t matter which way I say it, and as far as I can tell, I’m saying it the same way as everyone else, they all laugh and correct me . KillIN KillEN K’Lin -

I'd say your last one K'lin.

Emphasis on the IN

I have the exact same problem!
Pemba · 25/03/2022 15:02

No! Slither is how a snake moves, shouldn't have anything to do with cake.

Yes but when I say sliver it feels like I’m mispronouncing slither like saying muver instead of mother.
Pemba · 25/03/2022 20:32

Oh yes, I know what you mean, like how people with estuary /cockney accents say 'muvver' for mother, or 'fevver' for feather?

It's just the association of 'slither' with creepy crawly things is stronger than that, for me.

Bytrgrewd · 25/03/2022 21:13

Ah I see. I am happy thinking of slithery cake 😆

CaptaNoctem · 25/03/2022 21:30

@Beachsidesunset

You should never mock/be mocked about mispronunciations - it means you've read more than you've watched. Good for you!
Exactly!

Husband calls squirrels “screw-holes”

@PuppyMonkey

Oh yes and the surname Featherstone-Haugh Confused
Featherstonhaugh is my gran's maiden name. I'd only ever heard it pronounced and couldn't understand how it it spelled as it is.

How is it pronounced?!

Fanshaw

Schlaar · 20/11/2022 09:07

I pronounce Moët correctly so at this time of year when there’s a bit of it floating around I always get told I’m saying it wrong!

newnamethanks · 20/11/2022 09:16

Someone above has mentioned 'mayor'. Pronounce it how you like but, tv and radio announcers, mayoral is pronounced mare-ull. Not may-OR-ull. Please, I can't bear to hear it and elections are on the horizon.

Wretched politicians. There's one on tv now, expounding, "It's all hyper bowl". Grrr.

FearofQueefing · 20/11/2022 19:15

Awry - pronounced it aw-ree for years

I have struggled with 'Domino' since childhood. Have to consciously make an effort not to say 'donimo'..

FearofQueefing · 20/11/2022 19:25

While we're on the subject of Scottish place names. Has anyone flagged Kirkcudbright etc?

lieselotte · 20/11/2022 19:52

Yes Kirkbudbright and Kirkcaldy have featured quite a lot :)

I think places like Magdalen and Caius are just pronounced that way to be affected and make it obvious who the plebs are. Ditto Althorp. If it's Altrop spell it Altrop!

lieselotte · 20/11/2022 19:54

I say Leedel for Lidl but everyone says Liddle to the extent that they do plays on it in the advertising eg "Farnham is a lidl brighter" as it was recently renovated. But I first went to Lidl in Germany and so always say it the German way.

youcantry · 21/11/2022 16:47

In my first job there was a guy named St John.... I had no idea at 16 that it was pronounced Sin-gin and actually still think it's bizarre
