Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

A friend of mine used to say Pret a Manager. We corrected her, but the name stuck and now sometimes I say it without thinking and people give me pitying looks. Grin

How do you people pronounce Bognor Regis?

Bog-nuh Ree-jiss

Almond...

Pemba · 28/11/2022 14:37

Well how do you say almond though? I say ah-mund, not sounding the 'L', but I hear a lot of people saying al (to rhyme with pal) - mund. I have the idea that both are correct..

AllOfThemWitches · 28/11/2022 15:43

I've been told your way is correct and I was saying it wrong. I really have to force myself not to pronounce the 'L' though, it turns out I use the word more than I thought.

I pronounce it like the French - "boh-noir re-jeess".

Lee-dle and Al-di is the German way. All-di is wrong.

Interestingly this came up on another thread and I was told that all-di was right and al-di was wrong! I checked it with two German friends who confirmed that I was not going mad. I said the al rhymed with calculator.

I wonder if the person saying it thought that calculator was pronounced to rhyme with Salisbury Grin
