Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

actually it's 'sant sonz' innit? I think you might pronounce the 't'.

Cotoneaster.
Clearly should be pronounced Cotton Easter.

iklboo · 19/03/2022 15:55

I pronounced laconic as lasonic for ages Blush

CeleriacOfTheNight · 19/03/2022 15:56

My husband pronounces the term 'per se' as

parrrr sayy

I love him dearly, but we both work from home and every time I hear him say it during a work call, I bite my knuckles and die a little inside.

Kirkcaldy.

Like I was just saying it as it looks and that got me mocked, a lot Grin

WeirdArchitecture · 19/03/2022 16:02

Oooh i have a few more:

I used to pronounce promontory as 'prom-on-try' with a stress on the second syllable.

Also visceral - I said 'vice-eeral'. But, in my defence, i think that sounds much better!

@WeirdArchitecture kir-coddy, apparently!

LizBennet · 19/03/2022 16:07

Vietmanese. I can say Vietnam no problem, but not the longer word.
Broad. I always prounouce it as b-road rather than b-rawd.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/03/2022 16:09

Krug!

Oh god, i've always said "moway" for Moèt. Not that it comes up in conversation much tbf.

I used to say 'protajonist' for protagonist.

Still don't really know how to pronounce 'archipelago'.

Still quite bitter that I got marked incorrect in a reading test in primary school for pronouncing 'meLANcholy' instead of 'MELancholy'.

Terfydactyl · 19/03/2022 16:20

Only last year I discovered I'd been saying hyperbole wrong. I heard someone else saying it, wondered how they got hyperberleee from the letters, googled and found they were right.

WeirdArchitecture · 19/03/2022 16:23

Ok the very worst one of all, is SEGWAY (segue). I can't take it seriously at all Grin

Fatarseflanagan09 · 19/03/2022 16:24

I said epitome wrong and felt a right nob, I’d been saying it wrong for ages, I’m sure there are more.

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2022 16:25

It's the segue thing that never fails to do my head in. I only discovered how it was pronounced about three years ago thanks to a thread on here. Same with Arkansas.

FuckThatBullshit · 19/03/2022 16:25

Is it beckoned call? Or beck and call? 🙈

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2022 16:26

Oh yes and the surname Featherstone-Haugh Confused

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/03/2022 16:28

Insouciance. I can read it and say it in my head but not out loud.

Also-Worcestershire sauce. It is now a running joke and that makes it worse Grin

PegasusReturns · 19/03/2022 16:32

There’s someone I work with who always pronounces chasm wrong I’m torn over whether I should mention it….

3beesinmybonnet · 19/03/2022 16:33

But...but...Freddie Mercury said Moway and Shondon so that must be right!
I always think Saint Saens is pronounced Sonsan and Dun Laoghaire is Dun Lockair, even though I know I'm wrong so I just don't say them.
But 6th is pronounced sicksth and anyone who says sickth needs a bloody good sorting out!

girlmom21 · 19/03/2022 16:33

How often do they say chasm for this to be an issue? Grin

@PuppyMonkey

Oh yes and the surname Featherstone-Haugh Confused
Featherstonhaugh is my gran's maiden name. I'd only ever heard it pronounced and couldn't understand how it it spelled as it is.
