So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

Also Klitschko is saying he was misquoted about Kyiv being completely encircled.

It's still going to be a horrible night for them with that huge convoy headed down.

Alexandra2001 · 27/02/2022 20:39

@Roussette

I think Russia will be banned from World Cup. Sweden have already said they refuse to play against them.

Totally agree with your post Alexandra

Thankyou.

I'm so angry the UK is dragging its feet on sanctions against Russian Oligarchs and Russian money laundering or looking again at Russians given uk citizenship based on wealth not their politics.

This cXXt is threatening our very existence but Boris is more worried about party funding and still hasn't even got the laws drafted to deal with this - the EU has and they are the ones who are supposed to lack nimbleness.

SeanMean · 27/02/2022 20:39

Amazing thread, thanks for the clear and relevant information.

@fucketyfuckwit

FFS out local news page is reporting that a new Government Emergency Alert is due to be released where even if your phone is on silent you will get a loud 10 seconds siren to say that you are in danger.

Today of all days!

I would rather not know if the end is near.

This was already true; they tested it in our area a few months back.
Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 20:39

@Wrongkindofovercoat honestly I haven’t a clue.

Roussette · 27/02/2022 20:39

This appears NOT to be true now

That's interesting because I picked this up from Alexander Vindman who has met and knows him.

Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 20:41

Supplying aircraft is superb. That means rolling replacement as maintenance is required...Ukraine flies out, swaps, flies back and repeats...assuming the same types they are current on.

@DuncinToffee

Warning from Tobias Elwood re Truss supporting UK people to fight in Ukraine

We say NO to tasking the NATO alliance - but now endorse UK civilians, with no military training, to go and fight in Ukraine!

Please do NOT go if you have no combat experience.

You may get yourself and others who have to look after you, killed.

Notable that people with actual military experience like Elwood and Rory Stewart are essentially saying "Don't even think about it"!

I don't trust this Government to make the right decisions at the best of times and find it terrifying to have Johnson, Truss, Patel et al in charge during this crisis.

This is not new. The Govt have had this in place for some months now. That's your local news page scaremongering.

@Cam77

My friend passed the UK embassy in Dublin today. She said it cheered her to see the Ukrainian flag flying next to the Union Jack.

Not a big fan of this performative stuff. Leave this kind of thing to Facebook.

I disagree; I think it’s adding to the overall picture of a world uniting against a dictator.
GreenClock · 27/02/2022 20:41

That surrogacy story was sickening. I hope the poor mum is recovering and safe. Maybe she will be reunited with her so one day

This "performative stuff" is important. Look at how propaganda was used in WW2.

No one expected the Ukrainians to hold on as long as they have. Putin has long manipulated the media so we all believe he has a vast and superior army, and to make Ukrainians believe they have little to no support. It turns out Putin has been very wrong.

I have a friend in Ukraine who has remained in the country for various reasons. It means a lot to them that people are allied with them. Obviously protecting Ukrainian airspace, providing weapons and support would be preferable but don't minimise the impact that the "performative stuff" has on people.

Choppingonions · 27/02/2022 20:42

I don't think the invasion has stalled. A few teething problems due to overconfidence in the mood but they haven't got their big guns in yet, they have the south cut off nearly and the capital encircled (so belated arms will struggle to arrive) and they're, I'm sorry to say, just getting started.

I am trying to find concrete confirmation of this

I agree with you. It’s a way to show support when you can do little else right now.

Somebodylikeyew · 27/02/2022 20:43

@Thereisnolight

What are opinions of Zelensky? The social media hero? Pictured in military clothing with weapons but afaik he has no military training? Could he have handled things better in the lead up to this? Should he have forced the men to stay - even those who had no desire to fight? Apologies if this has been covered on this thread earlier. I don’t know anything about him and can’t find much about him now that doesn’t eulogise him. So just wondering what he is like - a good man doing his best or a glory-hunter?
I think he’s a fucking legend. And proof if ever it was needed that “ordinary” people are worth a million “career politicians”.
Ripepear · 27/02/2022 20:43

This government agency alert from the phone. Is this uk you are talking about ?

Drybird2020 · 27/02/2022 20:43

It's similar to what I saw reported. Police are coming down hard on protesters, she said a friend she was protesting with was knocked unconscious by a police baton. She said the rest of the world doesn't realise how much dissent there is in Russia.

Choppingonions · 27/02/2022 20:43

Putin hasn't been wrong. Don't get carried away. It won't help.

notimagain · 27/02/2022 20:43

@Roundeartheratchriatmas

EU is also apparently to provide fighter jets to Ukraine. I hope they do it fast.
Do you have a source for that?
dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 20:44

@Roussette

Yes I saw that but people trying to verify it are saying they can't find any confirmation. I will post if I see anything more on this (it would be such a big deal).
BreadInCaptivity · 27/02/2022 20:44

@Roussette

Looks like this is true....

"Russian Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, reportedly fired today. Gerasimov was very highly regarded, the most important military leader of the past generation, & the architect of today’s Russian Armed Forces. He’s served as the head of the military since 2012."

He'll be falling out of a window soon

What's the source for this please?

Thereisnolight
The overwhelming opinion expressed in the previous two threads are that he has behaved heroically and has effectively mobilised the population. By staying in the capital (even when offered an escape route by the US) he has boosted the morale of the people. He has posted messages to the population that he is still in Kyiv and isn't going anywhere.
Other posters on now may have a different opinion of course.
