So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

@Alexandra2001 I'm so angry the UK is dragging its feet on sanctions against Russian Oligarchs and Russian money laundering or looking again at Russians given uk citizenship based on wealth not their politics.

I read earlier this week that the £2m Golden Visa investment programme has already come to a halt and will be abolished.

FFS out local news page is reporting that a new Government Emergency Alert is due to be released where even if your phone is on silent you will get a loud 10 seconds siren to say that you are in danger.

It's similar to what I saw reported. Police are coming down hard on protesters, she said a friend she was protesting with was knocked unconscious by a police baton. She said the rest of the world doesn't realise how much dissent there is in Russia.

Thereisnolight The overwhelming opinion expressed in the previous two threads are that he has behaved heroically and has effectively mobilised the population. By staying in the capital (even when offered an escape route by the US) he has boosted the morale of the people. He has posted messages to the population that he is still in Kyiv and isn't going anywhere. Other posters on now may have a different opinion of course.
I agree with you. He is leading his country by example.

What are opinions of Zelensky? The social media hero? Pictured in military clothing with weapons but afaik he has no military training? Could he have handled things better in the lead up to this? Should he have forced the men to stay - even those who had no desire to fight? Apologies if this has been covered on this thread earlier. I don’t know anything about him and can’t find much about him now that doesn’t eulogise him. So just wondering what he is like - a good man doing his best or a glory-hunter?
I think there will be a time to look for the answers to your questions, but currently he's showing a level of bravery that is not common, and probably the majority of people want to show him backing and support.

Imagine knowing your wife and kids are no. 2 on the Russian's hit list, and still staying and fighting!

The fighter jets story is not really clear yet.

They would need to provide jets that Ukrainian pilots can already fly, apparently Poland has some old MiGs that would work.

Which is good because we don't want Putin to start firing the people who can stop him from ordering a nuclear launch

That's a relief because, if he was one of the two heavily uniformed men seen with Putin in his TV address today, when the camera panned round one of the men in particular had a rather worried/concerned look on his face at what was being said, so I had him down as a possible contender for a take out.

DuncinToffee My first thought was , I don't think Truss is really encouraging untrained people to go... more she may well be enabling British forces to enter under this guise. Although sadly some untrained people may still go, and I guess would actually give authenticity to the presence of any trained troops there...

Hell of a step up if it’s true….but it’s not just airframes it’s pilots..wonder how many of those they have left..

There are a lot Russian brand helicopters kicking around in Poland and elsewhere that the Ukraines will be familiar with…maybe that’s what’s on offer.

What are opinions of Zelensky?

He’s staying put, getting involved and playing social media to his advantage. Would have been far easier - and personally safer - for him to have left the country. There was another MP (not sure what they call them in Ukraine) on the BBC earlier saying he was staying and would be doing what he could to support fighting efforts. They are leading by example and that is surely something to be commended.

Zelensky is a million times braver than I would ever be in such circumstances. The way he is rallying his people. I hope the Russians do something about Putin sharpish.

Supplying aircraft is superb. That means rolling replacement as maintenance is required...Ukraine flies out, swaps, flies back and repeats...assuming the same types they are current on.
How? Ukraine doesn't use Western planes, they use Russian made SU and MiG 'craft. they would need training to use, say a EuroFighter.

This has been disputed if you look on the comments. It was false Information. Someone commented saying they were sure it wasn't true as there was no sign of Russians where they were. It's on this comment that it's shown to be misinformation.
