So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

EU is also apparently to provide fighter jets to Ukraine. I hope they do it fast.

Apologies if I have missed the information earlier in the thread, but how are the BBC teams going to get out of Kyiv now that flights and trains and so on are stopped/impossible? Embassy staff and British citizens must have left already if they could so there won't be help there.

I admire their courage hugely. Lyse Doucet was in Afghamistan for so much of that crisis too, and now in Kyiv.

Lyse Douset also covered a lot in Syria as well. She's a fantastic journalist.

My friend passed the UK embassy in Dublin today. She said it cheered her to see the Ukrainian flag flying next to the Union Jack.

Not a big fan of this performative stuff. Leave this kind of thing to Facebook.

"Russian Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, reportedly fired today. Gerasimov was very highly regarded, the most important military leader of the past generation, & the architect of today’s Russian Armed Forces. He’s served as the head of the military since 2012."

He'll be falling out of a window soon

Respectfully I disagree. There is a place in this thread for all comments and observations. This was a strong image noted by the poster and it's a legitimate point of view.

This appears NOT to be true now

Which is good because we don't want Putin to start firing the people who can stop him from ordering a nuclear launch

FFS out local news page is reporting that a new Government Emergency Alert is due to be released where even if your phone is on silent you will get a loud 10 seconds siren to say that you are in danger.

Today of all days!

I would rather not know if the end is near.

Handy that Ukraine have pilots who know how to fly them! Wink Glad everyone is showing strong support - and so hope the firing of the General is true.

The Swiss freezing assets is as incredible as the foreign secretary telling would be volunteers they are supported in this. It's big.

Lets hope the ruble becomes cheaper than toilet paper tomorrow.

How can they do this without putting boots on the ground, just push them over the border ?

What are opinions of Zelensky? The social media hero? Pictured in military clothing with weapons but afaik he has no military training?
Could he have handled things better in the lead up to this?
Should he have forced the men to stay - even those who had no desire to fight?
Apologies if this has been covered on this thread earlier. I don’t know anything about him and can’t find much about him now that doesn’t eulogise him. So just wondering what he is like - a good man doing his best or a glory-hunter?
