So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

@Roundeartheratchriatmas

Is there the chance of a black ops or similar to help the Ukraine by the west does anyone know ? Or is that too risky ?
You are not going to get a authoritative answer to that question here.
DuncinToffee · 27/02/2022 20:05

@Roussette

I think Russia will be banned from World Cup. Sweden have already said they refuse to play against them.

Totally agree with your post Alexandra

Current FIFA statement

Russia cannot play any FIFA matches in Russia, cannot call itself Russia.
They are to be called Football Union of Russia.
No flag, no anthem,
Russia will be banned if war does not stop.

Quite a cop out

whataballbag · 27/02/2022 20:06

Every news alert I get I'm hoping it's 'the one'

ponkydonkey · 27/02/2022 20:07

The Norwegians are going to take some of the trillions held by putin in their banks, and give it to Ukraine in the form of weapons 😀😀😀

Roussette · 27/02/2022 20:08

Total cop-out Duncin

I expected more.

What's in a name...

peridito · 27/02/2022 20:09

Um..are Russia and Ukraine meeting to talk or not ?
CNN saying not ,BBC saying agreed to meet on Belarus border .

tigger1001 · 27/02/2022 20:09

@Bunnycat101

Surely that convoy must be ripe for airstrikes? It is a bizarre world when sky news basically is reporting on tank movements. There can’t really be any possible element of surprise for the Russians.
I suspect it's the show of strength they are wanting rather than the element of surprise
ClunkyPrinter · 27/02/2022 20:10

Place mat King

RecklessRemote · 27/02/2022 20:11

Place marking also. So much more better information here. Thanks all.

PinkTonic · 27/02/2022 20:13

Why do people keep taking up space on the thread place marking? Just watch the thread.

youhadmeatjello · 27/02/2022 20:14

I was wondering that about the peace talks but now Belarus is involved surely it’s not going ahead? I was hoping it would and be more than empty words

MintMocha · 27/02/2022 20:15

Apologies if I have missed the information earlier in the thread, but how are the BBC teams going to get out of Kyiv now that flights and trains and so on are stopped/impossible? Embassy staff and British citizens must have left already if they could so there won't be help there.

I admire their courage hugely. Lyse Doucet was in Afghamistan for so much of that crisis too, and now in Kyiv.

Not surprised by that at all, FIFA are as corrupt as they come.

Choccy21 · 27/02/2022 20:17

Well it seems the world is turning it’s back on Russia. They are being isolated.

timetochangeusername · 27/02/2022 20:17

@KenAdams they're back in Ireland, leaving the poor woman in Kyiv I think

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 20:18

The Swiss are now suggesting they too will freeze Russian assets - Reuters.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 27/02/2022 20:19

@Possiblynotever I don't think China want 'in' so to speak, just they wouldn't do so badly from a situation where gas exports to Europe were reduced. As for foreign consumption, 99.9% of all PPE I have worn over the last two years has come from China, they can make whatever anyone needs, whenever they need it, cheaply and they have a big presence in emerging markets in Africa. They are very much long game players.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 20:19

Surely this is huge ^^ the Swiss are famously neutral ?

Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 20:20

It's not the job of journalists to get out. They bear witness for us, the good ones. They are to be admired.

How I wish for a new Halberstam, Arnett, Galloway, Faas, Mccullin, Burrows.

Similar to the olympics really? Where Russia got banned due to doping but compete under a slightly different name (and still,dope). 🤷‍♀️

Pmk. Thanks for new thread

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 27/02/2022 20:21

I'm curious about the impact of a civilian population which has mobile phones on this.

That brave wee woman with a bobble hat and sunflower seeds could have been killed, but it would have been filmed and evidence of a war crime.

Putin won't deal well with being mocked - so the tik tok of the young solders on snake Island saying "fuck you" will be provocative.

So, propaganda is going to be a different game now.

I keep having flashes of that scene in Downfall where Hitler loses his shit in the bunker. Perhaps Putin is doing that 24;7 and will pop a vessel. That'd be handy.

LadyEloise1 · 27/02/2022 20:22

My friend passed the UK embassy in Dublin today. She said it cheered her to see the Ukrainian flag flying next to the Union Jack.

CovidCorvid · 27/02/2022 20:23

@PinkPlantCase

If putting Kyiv under siege and starving civilians became the new strategy do we think that foreign countries/the UN would drop food in from planes? Over the active war zone.

I remember reading about I think it was ?Berlin? When the RAF were running flights several times a day to drop food because supply lines had been cut off. That was during the Cold War. Of course a very different context now.

I’d like to think so but the risk of being shot by a missile must be high.
