So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

Pmk, but quick question from my 11 year old. At what point once (if it happens) Russian troops take Kyiv (or other cities), is it considered "theirs"?

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:32

We are battling those wishing to derail with intent so I hope it can stay useful and helpful to all as it was excellent throughout the weekend but for some reason now it is Monday morning we seem to have a problem again spleen I wonder why that could be.......

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 28/02/2022 12:32

Adviser of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Anton Gerashchenko, reports that Kharkiv has been subjected to a massive shelling by BM-21 (multi launch rocket system.) "Dozens are dead and probably hundreds are wounded."

This tell place in a civilian area.

Sorry all can't contribute much right now, working but have read most recent posts.

I do think it's important to discuss the politics and economical history of the nation's involved, and how pro-russian involvement has effected foreign and domestic policy.

How we have got here, is as important as what we are doing now.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:35

The point in which the capital is captured and the government are forced or killed (or flee) I would not tell your 11year old the entire detail.
It wouldn't mean Russia had occupied all of Ukraine at that point, because to do that they would need to have captured every single major city - and having installed guards etc to secure them. At the moment we are nowhere near that - and quite the reverse seems to be happening. Fierce fighting in the second largest city now in Ukraine. The Russians badly need a win. So very sad to see beyond

When Russian soldiers or officials, not ukranians, are in charge of the government buildings and city infrastructure. There is usually a flag change.

Great Twitter thread here by Carole Cadwalladr about how Putin has been using disinformation for years and how it has led us to this point:

Emergency application for Ukraine to join the EU is apparently in the pipeline.

Hi I just wanted to say thanks to posters on this thread, really good info. I’m not up to date on the politics in this region at all, and it’s been much appreciated

Do you mean legally?

World opinion has turned against the invasion so it's unlikely that, even if Russia completely conquers Ukraine, many people would consider that they 'own' it.

But it looks like in any case Putin intended to keep Ukraine as a separate country but turn it into another Belarus, i.e. a Russian province in all but name.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:40

Yes I agree, Russian and Ukrainian policy but we do not want the thread flooded with brexit/partygate. If you want to explore that, please feel free to start new threads. This one is about update on the invasion and news. It is not going to be political and descend into a bun fight, with the loss of valuable information and insight.

Kremlin blamed nuclear alert on Liz Truss. Peskov: "There were unacceptable statements about possible conflict situations and even confrontations and clashes between Nato and Russa. I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary"

@CaveMum great thread and I posted it upthread but apparently, other forces are 'battling' to stop a thread derail and control the narrative. I wonder why?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 28/02/2022 12:42

Fucking hell! I've just seen that the Kremlin is saying they put their nuclear arsenal on alert due to comments from Liz Truss.

TheSillyMastiff · 28/02/2022 12:42

Literally is "capture the flag" sort of warfare.

Ukraine are giving a good resistance, but the question is how long will it last?

It's all well and good sending arms, but if you can't get them in, they are of no use.

Re the humanitarian crisis, as part of the talks a neutral channel for aid will have to be agreed to allow food supplies and water plus medical equipment, but nobody could transport arms through this route as it would be seen as a breech of the rules of the aid pathway. They would be transported in Vehicles carrying a red cross, part of the Geneva convention on warfare is that transport vessels/logistics vehicles displaying a red cross must not be fired upon or attacked.

We got in trouble in WW2 when we used a hospital ship to transport active soldiers and arms instead of wounded. Under the banner of a red cross.

Newrunner29 · 28/02/2022 12:43

Mentioning how the government could have ties to Russia which could obviously cause issues when it comes to what they are doing in response to situation is ,definitely not Russian bots or anyone with a bad agenda it's Legitimate comments. And has a right to he on a post about the situation

SnottyLottie · 28/02/2022 12:45

Fucking Liz Truss 😡

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:46

Kremlin blamed nuclear alert on Liz Truss

They detest Liz Truss and are trying to cause friction, division and fracture in Nato and the allies.

I didn't think it was useful telling people they could go and fight if they want to, but it is hardly reasonable to then threaten a nuclear strike!!!

This is war games, they are trying to create tension to break down the west's unity. It won't work. Not surprised they have chosen her, being a woman she is seen as an easy target.

Newrunner29 · 28/02/2022 12:46

And no it shouldn't be the only conversation but if u don't want to read scroll on

TheSillyMastiff · 28/02/2022 12:47

@SnottyLottie

Fucking Liz Truss 😡
She's really not qualified for this role, she runs her mouth too much and is prone to "inflammatory statements"

Most war time foreign secretaries are quite muted and speak only from approved speeches. They know that one wrong word could cause a antagonist response.

So what did Liz Truss say?
On Sunday morning's media round, Liz Truss told Sky News:

If we don’t stop Putin in Ukraine we are going to see others under threat – the Baltics, Poland, Moldova, and it could end up in a conflict with Nato. We do not want to go there. That is why it is so important we make the sacrifices now.

Yes, there will be an economic cost here in Britain, there will be a cost in terms of access to oil and gas markets. I firmly believe that the British public understand the price we will pay if we don’t stand up to Putin now.

According to the Interfax news agency, Dmitry Peskov has blamed these five sentences - among statements "by various representatives at various levels" - for Vladimir Putin putting his nuclear deterrence forces on high alert.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 28/02/2022 12:49

Thanks. In the typical logic of a child, he suggested not only the government being in a bunker, but keeping the flag in a bunker so it cannot be captured...
