So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

I look at this thread through my fingers. I am so, so scared and have hidden my sm apps on my phone to stop endless scrolling. My stomach is churning and my heart racing. I am not looking forward to the next few days.

Meanwhile a remarkable series of events sees Germany massively bump it's military spending up.

Killing Zelensky now would be counter productive, he has such a world wide following, the outrage would ensure Zelensky would become immortalised forever.

It would also give the green light for Putin himself to be on the receiving end of the same treatment, an eye for an eye.

I believe Zelensky and his family are target number one for the Russians, and it would be very unwise to follow through with that after the last few days. It would only serve to embolden Ukraine and the world even more.

DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 07:49

@CrunchyCarrot

I am so worried these 'talks' are a trap, too. I am sure Zelensky is aware of this, he's a very brave man. I have only admiration for him and how he's leading Ukraine right now.
I came on here to see what others thought about the talks being in Belarus. Given how Moscow has treated what it sees as the opposition in the past, I very much hope that zelensky is not making his first and biggest mistake by going. Surely the risk of being poisoned is astronomically high? He has been so strategic but at the same time, it might lead Putin to think if he gets rid of Zelensky, then Ukraine will lose its faith and determination.
DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 07:51

Not necessarily in Putins interests

I really hope he realises this. It’s hard to see how any of the events in the past week are in Putin’s interests.

Ripepear · 28/02/2022 07:52

I thought Zelensky was sending delegates to the meeting? He isn’t going himself is he?

NobodysGonnaKnow · 28/02/2022 07:53

A team of delegates are going and I doubt very much they’re going without assuming the worst.

I am interested in whether the UN will be able to get to worldwide economic sanctions for Russia.
I have done some research in the press on Switzerland and the belief seems to be that personal money of rich Russians peaked years ago there (although there are of course elaborate company structures so they will not know for sure). Russian investors seem to be holding Swiss francs by virtue of ownership of Swiss companies more these days.
I would like to know how much money rich Russians have in Dubai etc. That is an interesting question to me. If UAE is sanctioned to via UN surely that would be a good thing.
I personally believe there will be lots of pressure on India too now.
I expect this to be an economic war in the coming days and for it all to become too complicated for me to understand properly.

This

What a guy.

I hope beyond hopes that the talks are positive in some way.

TheNinthLock · 28/02/2022 07:57

Placemarking as have to go to work. Have been following these threads from the start. Thank you for intelligent discussion. MN at its best.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 28/02/2022 07:57

Can we stop with the anti UK rhetoric please? It’s blighting the thread.

WeAreTheHeroes · 28/02/2022 07:57

For those posting about Zelenskyy and social media, when he campaigned for the presidency he did so largely via social media. His tweets are really punchy and of course in terms of world leaders he is a young man so used to technology, etc.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 08:00

I think that is their intention. Best to ignore.

I disagree - it's an important part of the whole picture. Honestly, some Brexit remainers warned about Russian influence on the referendum and were dismissed as nutters. Who has actually gained from destabilising the EU?
RedToothBrush · 28/02/2022 08:02

Ah maybe.
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 08:02

They are derailing the thread - we have had this throughout, deliberate switching the conversation to partygate/brexit etc. Sometimes successfully, mostly not as it is transparent.

cakeorwine · 28/02/2022 08:03

I do hope that the UK steps up its attitude towards refugees as the EU has.

3 years entry, no questions asked.

I am sure we will do the the same as the EU by the end of the day as there is pressure to do so.

Roussette · 28/02/2022 08:04

Exactly WeAreTheHeroes

For anyone interested, all this goes back to 2014, here is Carole Cadwallader explaining it really well.

Really worth a read.

I think Russian oligarchs with property in London and may be in London right now are going to be as pissed as you or i about a nuke tbf.

That might focus their minds re pressure on putin...

anotherperson1 · 28/02/2022 08:04

The Russian army carrying out the war /
Do they believe in what Putin is doing or would they be too scared to not follow orders?

Who could have an impact of enough is enough?

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2022 08:05

I think we are capable of acknowledging that criticism of government policies/decisions doesn't equate to anti-uk sentiment.

Are you implying London could be nuked?

NobodysGonnaKnow · 28/02/2022 08:05

We hear you. You’re furious about Brexit.I understand and yet it’s so wearisome to hear the sentiment rehashed constantly.

It’s all over Mumsnet constantly. I’m so tired of it. I’d would be great to just focus on the current situation but I understand if I’m in the minority to feel that way.

Yes I agree, we know. I didn’t want it either but it’s constant and derailing.
