So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

[quote dreamingbohemian]I had to laugh at this:

"BREAKING: every woman in your life now has at least a small crush on Volodymyr Zelenskyy and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it"

Agreed!

Truly strange things are happening today:

The President of Switzerland has announced that the country will join the EU sanctions against Russia.

Apparently 30% of Russian foreign assets are held in Switzerland - probably precisely because of its historical neutrality.

And its not just Switzerland doing odd things.

Brazil, normally votes with Russia at the UN. Thats the ultra right wing President Bolsonaro. They've just voted to support the emergency session of the General Assembly to bypass Russia's veto in the Security Council and has demanded a full cessation of hostilities.

SugarAndSpiceIsNice · 27/02/2022 21:41

@prh47bridge - It's Ukrainian Border forces. That thread has several videos showing Indian students facing ill-treatment at the hands and feet of Ukrainian forces. You can hear men and women speaking in Hindi commenting on what's going on. This has also been reported and corroborated by reputable news sources in India.
It seems Ukraine wants to help Putin by displaying how racist they are. Unfortunately African nationals have also overwhelmingly reported ill-treatment against them.
I'm really appalled at how selective European reporting is that such appalling, racist behaviour is not being highlighted.
You can be against Putin and against racism at the same time. It doesn't have to be either / or. Real life is not a fairy tale where there is a "good" one and a "bad" one.

TraceyLacey · 27/02/2022 21:43

I've been watching live streams from @xenasolo on tiktok, she's in Ukraine and is very informative and calm.

EU announces it has agreed unanimously amongst all member countries to take in Ukrainian refugees for up to 3 years without asking them to first apply for asylum. Just been announced following a meeting of EU Interior ministers

And us?
We're a disgrace.

quiteathome · 27/02/2022 21:44

Reading with interest. Whilst i try and understand it all.

FatFucker · 27/02/2022 21:44

Is anyone in the financial sector be able to give an educated opinion as to whether the Russians will indeed be queuing at their banks tomorrow to take all their cash out. Or is this propaganda to scare them?

FatFredsFriedEgg · 27/02/2022 21:46

With a despotic Russia on the Security Council at this time the UN feels like the League Of Nations in 1936. Sad

ilovebrie8 · 27/02/2022 21:46

@SugarAndSpiceIsNice you are posting the same posts on another thread about this specific topic. Best stay there and not try to derail this thread which is very informative

ilovebrie8 · 27/02/2022 21:48

Not sure why you are cross posting on here when there is a thread about this ...that you are posting on

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 21:48

@dreamingbohemian

The General Assembly can't authorise the use of force so it doesn't really matter that Russia can't veto anything there.
No but it can do a U4P. Then it can progress to condemning Russia and station it's act of aggression, this will then allow them to table sanctions against Russia.

Sanctions are then voted on by members.

They had to do it before when Russia decided to piss about in Korea, because it vetoed itself in the security council.

Whilst it doest equate force on the ground and military mobilization, it can further sanction Russia such as impose travel bans on leaders.

Yes I have been watching too and would agree.
RJnomore1 · 27/02/2022 21:49

Thank you all for explaining. Slight flaw in the UN design then?

Also yes to developing a crush on Zelensky…

Lampface · 27/02/2022 21:50

Placemarking, thank you for these threads.

ilovebrie8 · 27/02/2022 21:51

Let’s hope this comes to an end soon it’s terrible 😞 I can’t believe how brave the ordinary people are and putting up such a fight ...their president is an inspiration...yeah everyone has a crush on him Wink

FatFredsFriedEgg · 27/02/2022 21:52

Slight flaw in the UN design then?

It was very different times.

OfstedOffred · 27/02/2022 21:53

All of this really serves to illustrate how the current set up of Nato, UN Security council is actually pretty limited in curtailing Russia from doing something fucking stupid.

Putin is mad.

Gladioli23 · 27/02/2022 21:54

The points previously being made about how NATO doesn't step in for Ukraine because they aren't NATO, with the discussions then of the (hopefully exceedingly unlikely) option of Russia using a "very small" nuke on Ukraine - wouldn't this require them to step in per the Budapest Memorandum?

It's already been broken by Russia in most ways but I don't think by the US or UK?

I didn't know you owned this thread and so you get to decide what constitutes derailing a thread.
I will take myself away from this thread as clearly highlighting the plight of brown people who are trying to escape across the border to go back to their country only manages to elicit annoyance from you. After all, you are the imperial master of this thread and you get to decide whose plight in a war is of sufficient importance to be highlighted here.

SnottyLottie · 27/02/2022 21:55

In regards to FIFA, Russia play Poland next and then (if they win), either Sweden or the Czech Republic. All 3 have refused to play against Russia. That is going to give FIFA a decision to make.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 27/02/2022 21:55

How come Russia retained the "founding member" status once it was no longer the USSR?

dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 21:55

I don't think @SugarAndSpiceIsNice is derailing the thread. Lots of people are concerned about refugees and people trying to get out of Ukraine, it's worth letting people know that some people are having a harder time than others.

There is a lot of organising happening on social media to try to help African students get out, for example. It's a real problem.

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 21:57

@OfstedOffred

All of this really serves to illustrate how the current set up of Nato, UN Security council is actually pretty limited in curtailing Russia from doing something fucking stupid.

Putin is mad.

Hence why to date he's been able to get away with so much. Russia has held strong positions since the end of WW2.

But I think he's played his hand this time and ended up shocked to find the west unite like it has.

He didn't expect this backlash, as far as he was probably concerned he was just invading some poor East European nation that couldn't get in to the EU and couldn't get in to NATO, so in his paranoid and mentally unwell state has decided to invade it.

Arseholes must be twitching in Russia, because Putin will not bare the responsibility of his invasion stalling he will look to blame others at the table and make an example of them.

ParsleySageRosemary · 27/02/2022 21:57

My inadequate understanding is that the aim of the UN is to provide a talking shop for all sides. It needs trust. We are past that now, but avenues need to be there. (back to lurking)

ilovebrie8 · 27/02/2022 21:58

Calm down @SugarAndSpiceIsNice I didn’t mean to offend you .I was simply stating there is a thread about this topic already ...and you are posting the exact posts on both ...not sure why!?
