So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

@SugarAndSpiceIsNice Perhaps they should be heading the other way and India can fly them out from their friends in Russia?

Ukraine treated them well pre invasion but India sided with their enemy, Ukraine is seeing its country destroyed by Russia, i don't condone it but i don't blame them either, the only one to blame here is Russia.

India has made its choice, i hope Truss never sets foot in the place for another one of her trade deals.

I had to laugh at this:

"BREAKING: every woman in your life now has at least a small crush on Volodymyr Zelenskyy and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it"

Wrongkindofovercoat · 27/02/2022 21:21

Yes, he is very good at soundbites

I suppose we need to compare him with other leaders who have had their countries invaded by Russia ? Who else has been in a similar situation, how did it pan out for the country and leader ?

vera99 · 27/02/2022 21:22

Before he was President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy created and starred in a Ukrainian show about a history teacher who accidentally becomes the president after one of his rants about political corruption goes viral. Boris take note.....

This thread is great. I was feeling very anxious, but am finding the information here very calming and informative. Thank you, OP and all the other posters here.

WigglesWaggles · 27/02/2022 21:23

I've been here reading since the beginning. I've not really commented because I'm trying to educate myself. I've found this thread a great place to find information and non hysterical conversation. Thank you.

My heart hurts for all the Ukrainians, I can't even begin to imagine their reality right now. They are showing incredible bravery and unity. Zelensky is a hero in my eyes. His courage and his dedication are unfaltering. I can't see many presidents/PMs showing the same commitment to their country.

The 'peace talks' supposed to be taking place. Are these likely to happen with missiles coming into Ukraine from Belarus earlier today?

Very interesting point - would a land bridge to the Crimea plus assurances that Ukraine would not join NATO be enough to get Russia to withdraw (and save face)?
I am not suggesting that is the correct course of action just wondering what he would consider enough.[/quote]
I don't know. I would have said yes before Putin gave his war speech. But in that speech he said the aim was to completely demilitarise Ukraine + regime change. So it's difficult to see what he would settle for.

Also he will not want to seem weak or military ineffective when NATO/EU countries are suddenly super gung ho and calling his bluffs.

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 21:24

I just watched a video on twitter of a Ukrainian man, with a fag in his mouth moving a Russian placed anti tank mine by hand in to a forest 😳

In his loafers, jeans and jumper. These men literally fear nothing do they!

BREAKING: Russian airline Aeroflot says it has cancelled all flights to European destinations.

It comes after the European Commission shut down EU airspace to Russian planes.

They've not got a lot of choice have they?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/02/2022 21:29

@vera99

Liz Truss has said we need to understand that we are in this for the long haul which leads me to surmise that his grip on power at the top is absolute and any coup is not thought likely.
Liz Truss is as thick as pigsh*t.
Greattimestroubledtimes · 27/02/2022 21:29

@Papyrus

On a lighter note, I just read that Zelensky is the Ukrainian voice of Paddington.
And won Ukrainian Strictly in 2006. Taking legendary to a whole unexpected dimension
SnottyLottie · 27/02/2022 21:29

Crossed post with @Roussette Looks like we’re following the same news sources 😆

EsmaCannonball · 27/02/2022 21:29

Zelenskyy also won Ukraine's version of Strictly. (The footage is worth checking out.) Between him and Vitali Klitschko I'm starting to believe we should replace Boris and co. with Bill Bailey and Frank Bruno.

RJnomore1 · 27/02/2022 21:30

Can I ask a really stupid question that might already have been answered in a previous thread?

Why are the UN not trying to organise peace keeping forces to go in?

Roussette · 27/02/2022 21:30

Yes! 😂

And of course, their planes could be siezed I presume...

Notonthestairs · 27/02/2022 21:30

I've seen that video Mastiff - extraordinary watching him wandering off in to the woods with a land mine.

On a similar note Johnny Mercer has a video of a Ukrainian tractor towing a tank.

Notonthestairs · 27/02/2022 21:31

Russia vetoed UN action. I think they chair the UN Security Council this year.

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 21:34

@RJnomore1

Because Russia is a "original" member, so it has the power to veto anything. Last night it vetoed against the security council declaring Russia's invasion of Ukraine as illegal, meaning nothing gets done.

Now the UN can progress to the "general assembly" where every member state gets a vote and no veto by a founding member can be activated. But it takes time to call them all in.

EsmaCannonball · 27/02/2022 21:34

Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and would veto the use of troops. Some are now arguing that Russia should lose its permanent status.

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2022 21:34

Slight conflict of interest going on there!
IsabelHerna · 27/02/2022 21:35

My thoughts and prayers to all x

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 21:36

So the UN counts for precisely fuck all. What a joke.
Notonthestairs · 27/02/2022 21:36

"Now the UN can progress to the "general assembly" where every member state gets a vote and no veto by a founding member can be activated. But it takes time to call them all in."

Didn't realise that it can be referred on. Let's hope they can speed up normal processes.

dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 21:37

The General Assembly can't authorise the use of force so it doesn't really matter that Russia can't veto anything there.
