It is an absolute outrage of such magnitude it is actually hard to take in.

For sure, the gloves will be coming off now in the west, we can no longer pretend Putin can be 'contained'

Up to now there has been a naivety certainly in Europe.

This has really upset me today. Ukraine has done nothing to deserve it. Imagine how terrifying it must be for the poor Ukrainian civilians. The children will be terrified Sad

On a selfish level, just things were starting to return to more normality with the pandemic this happens.

Unsure33 · 24/02/2022 07:39

@Crookedman

We need to completely cut them off. Tbh though Europe gas dependency on Russia makes this basically impossible. It doesn’t matter if Nordstream 2 has been stopped europe is still and will continue to buy their gas from them. Britain needs to completely shut down any economic activity with Russia, every single penny needs to be frozen. It won’t stop them but it will at least make it harder for them to finance this travesty.

There are veiled threats of nuking anyone who intervenes. I hope every single politician who has taken money from Russians associated with Putin or made excuses for Putin by blaming the west and Nato hangs their head in shame. Every single one of them, and thats across political parties.

It’s all very well you saying that but they have already started cyber attacks on the USA . If they do that here they could bring us to a halt pretty quickly without firing a shot.

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

The UK is not small fry, is has a powerful army and navy with nuclear weapons, of which I am glad we now have. The EU/US/NATO combined would defeat the Russians over night if needed.
Fair enough

The idea of what next is very worrying

supermoonrising · 24/02/2022 07:42

Britain won't do much about it, Johnson and much of his party is in the pocket of Putin. Why was the Russian Report never published? Because it exposes how compromised Johnson and his cronies are.

Precisely. Corruption isn’t just “morally” bad, it has real geopolitical significance. The Tories are now constrained at a time of crisis by the potential legal ramifications of their past illegal activities.

*Britain has been accused of becoming a global hub for money laundering after new figures revealed £1.5 billion worth of property in the country has been brought by Russians facing allegations of corruption or with ties to the Kremlin.

Much of the property is held by companies registered to Britains overseas territories and crown dependencies, according to data uncovered by Transparency International, The Times reports.
But Transparency International director Duncan Hames warned these figures are only the tip of the iceberg and said laws that force overseas companies holding property in the UK to reveal their owners was long overdue*

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 07:43

Germany now providing weapons

Diplomatic relations upheld with Kremlin now passed

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 07:45

What can we do?

We can completely cut Russia off for one. Not just with sanctions but in every conceivable way. We can stop flights immediately and we must be willing to really follow through on making this extremely painful for Russia. Now is the right time. Cut off their internet, electricity, banking, money markets, property, every fucking thing. No one should be any doubt what happens when a state goes rogue like Russia.

We now need to show some serious metal. He only understands action, real action so lets give it to him. Enough is enough.

Gotmyprincecharming · 24/02/2022 07:46

Terrified for the people in Ukraine..DHs parents and sisters live there. They were terrified during the morning when it started and had to find a safe place in Kyiv..they obviously are not getting any information about what's happening so asked us to keep them updated. DH gone to work crying with worry. We feel so helpless. I feel sick, I can't even begin to imagine the fear they feel.

I don’t think nuclear war is anything to be glad about.

China is watching and waiting. If they start for Taiwan then we are truly fucked.

Refrosty · 24/02/2022 07:47

I remember listening to LBC and hearing how Ukrainians were mostly used to Putin's threats. One British guy rang up and said his Ukrainian wife was going to visit family there as she wasn't worried (she'd be there now). Little stories like that make me so sad. I hope she is safe I cannot express my anger and disgust towards Putin. We need the heaviest sanctions right now!

Riverlee · 24/02/2022 07:48

Depressing.

Today was supposed to be the day we all relax slightly about covid, and to start ‘living with it’ rather than being afraid of it, and then this happens.

Another black cloud hanging over us.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 07:48

Our PM should be suspending all flights in and out of Russia right now.

Suspending all banking, property, companies - everything should be cut off immediately not in a few weeks/months.

We may not be able to fight and stand up Ukraine but we can help them in all other ways.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 24/02/2022 07:50

I don’t think sanctions will stop him.

Will the west really abandon Ukraine because they aren’t in NATO ? Surely they can’t just let him take the country.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 07:50

Ostryga We can not continue to be threatened with Nuclear war from a crazy tin pot dictator that has lost his mind. It is not the west that are starting wars, and doing nuclear drills, it is that crazy fucker in the Kremlin.

Problem is if we follow this route we are opening ourselves for major loss of life for British civilians. Don't forget that big red button for nuclear weapons is in the hands of a clearly unstable person at the moment
EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/02/2022 07:51

I got woken up in the middle of the night by army planes overhead, heading East. So scary.

I can't imagine what those poor people in Kiev and other parts of Ukraine are going through.

anotherperson1 · 24/02/2022 07:51

I literally cannot comprehend this at all. How is this man unstoppable????? How can he just say I fancy a war and go to war???

Why can't someone get to him, destroy him for the sake of humanity and put a final stop to all this???

I should tune out of the news but I know I'm going to be completely overwhelmed by it all and not able to step back.

In all seriousness, what do you think the west should do? Are you prepared to go fight? Would you send your kids?

If NATO wanted to fight this then our troops should have been in there weeks ago. If they had been, then it would be claimed that we provoked this attack.

Tynetime · 24/02/2022 07:55

So sad and worrying. Really feel for the people of the Ukraine and those with families there.
Wonder what the implication will be for the Premier League clubs with funding from Russua.

PatchworkElmer · 24/02/2022 07:59

I’d be surprised if we actually did anything about it. I think our politicians will do a load of posturing that that’ll be it- which would be shameful. I feel very sorry for the people of Ukraine.

Fuckitydoodah · 24/02/2022 07:59

This is so fucking awful. All the innocent women, men, children and animals that will die because of one mad man's thirst for power. I wish someone would put a bullet in Putin's head.

I feel sad and scared.

Tiredmum100 · 24/02/2022 08:04

@Bloodyshittystorms

This frightens me more than Covid ever did. God knows what that man is capable of.
And me.
TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 24/02/2022 08:07

I'm absolutely devastated. Evil evil man to kill and injure innocent civilians. I've been in tears since I saw the news. And really very scared about how this will all end.
