What did we see last night..?

We had been away for a few nights and travelled back quite late. Towards the end of our journey, this was about 2am, we were driving along an A road in a rural area when something crossed the road in front of us in full headlights for about 3 seconds. It was about the height of a person, maybe 6 feet or over, but had short powerful legs and hips which seemed to move in a circular fluid fashion. It was not a deer because it stood on two legs. This was in the midlands and the area is traditional rolling fields and woodland. In this particular spot there are no houses or buildings, nearest is over a mile away. We drove back today as its only 7 miles from home to look at the road layout and whatever it was moved into a wide bowl shaped field dropping down to a stream. Any ideas?

@CaMePlaitPas

Why on earth would the devil be hoofing around the English countryside during one of the worst storms in recent years? Confused
Didn't see the Met Office warnings?
FGSWhatNow · 21/02/2022 23:04

In support of the deer theory, was it near here where you saw the, er, thing?

I haven’t quite RTFT (nearly though…) but I’m thinking maybe it was a wheelie bin ?

It’s the ‘moving in a circular motion’ that got me thinking. A bit of wind and a flappy lid, the stuff of horror movies…..

EmmaH2022 Yes there's so much to explore, I've just though of yet another place which I am actually too frightened to go in to which is Clapham Woods on the way to Worthing, there have been so many mysterious happenings there it boggles the mind, you're meant to keep your dog on the lead because dogs have just vanished into thin air if left to run by themselves, apparently there's a witches coven which worship the goddess Hecate, rumour has it the dogs are used as sacrifice, there's also UFO sightings in the wood, it really has a horrible vibe, there's a house for sale in the village which backs on to the woods but no way am I buying that! There's something going on because Clapham Wood, Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring are linked by ley lines which probably explains why they all have the same evil atmosphere.

I'm going to look all this up tomorrow

Or at 3am when I can't sleep....

EmmaH2022 · 21/02/2022 23:28

JohnStone I would totally buy that house though I'm sure I can't afford it!

OhWhyNot · 21/02/2022 23:28

I’m sure I once saw a wallaby in Norfolk

bemusedmoose · 21/02/2022 23:28

escaped cassowary? Any zoos in the county that might have lost animals in the storm?

Failing that a giant Ewok?

JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 23:29

There's a video on YT about the Clapham Wood mystery.

MCamp10 · 21/02/2022 23:31

Orang Utan?

BluTangClan · 21/02/2022 23:31

It wasn't wearing a green hat, white collar with a black tie and carrying a pickernick basket, was it? Ay Booboo?

Ooh, no that's a step too far even for me! The village is strange too, if you drive through it it feels like everyone views you with suspicion and you can almost feel the curtains twitching, of course the locals all deny the witches coven exists (only natural) The house that was for sale was not a bad price for Sussex but it was empty, you could walk to the woods from your garden in about a minute, just jump over the smallish hedge and off you go, but no, it's way too close, I like a degree of separation!
JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 23:48

EmmaH2022 The video on YT is called "Hunting Hecate"

EmmaH2022 · 22/02/2022 00:01

John does the house look like this?

www.magicpaintings.com/

Thanks so much for the YT rec! I will definitely watch that.

I love that someone has said cassowary, I think we've covered all options now!

No, not quite! That's a gorgeous cottage, the house was fairly modern.
PrincessFiorimonde · 22/02/2022 00:21

I haven't RTFT, but depending on where and who you are, it was either a:

  1. yeti
  2. sasquatch (Big Foot)
  3. yeren
  4. nightmare
  5. drug-induced hallucination
  6. start of a novel

Hope you sleep well!

Apologies, OP. Not only had I not RTFT, but I hadn't read the whole of your first post either Blush, so I didn't realise you are in the Midlands.

I therefore retract my original 1-3 suggestions, and offer instead:

  1. trick of the light
  2. Rodney Trotter someone in fancy dress
  3. umm
sashh · 22/02/2022 02:21

@GallopingHighRoad

OK, that's a great idea *@Laiste*. Virtual drawing until I get home and retrieve my dubious portrait.

Firstly, it was going right (gateway) to left (hedge and field that drops away). The head shape is about right, but it did not have horns. More like woven hair sweeping up/back that made it look 'goat like' and have the appearance of horns. The hind legs were not as distinct as you have drawn and I would not say they were hooves at all now with recollection. More like large plate-sized feet, but something was making them difficult to pick out the detail - hair or something making it blurry at the lower level as it moved. It was also more upright. It had stripes or similar on its nose now I recall.

The hair - was it Donald Trump?

Maybe Harvey the Pooka?

Furries · 22/02/2022 02:49

@Mostlyjustrunning - me too! I can go months not thinking about that post, and then something like this pops it back into my brain again. I don’t want to remember that forest story (don’t care if it’s made up, it freaked me out)

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 22/02/2022 03:56

Another one for standing up deer

EmmaH2022 · 22/02/2022 05:39

As predicted, I am awake in the middle of the night and wondering how OP got on...

Zonder · 22/02/2022 06:21

Could it just have been a person?

WobbleMolly · 22/02/2022 06:52

she saw a man standing with just his head and shoulders visible grinning ear to ear. At 5 am.

How did she react, OP?
