Watching Casablanca for the first time...I love old films but don't feel I've seen that many of them.

Can you please give me your recommendations?

Off the top of my head, ones I've loved in the past include The Ladykillers and pretty much anything with Alistair Simm!

Affair to remember - bawl every time. Some like it hot.

High society. Singing in the rain. Easter parade. Some like it hot.

for Alistair Simm, school for scoundrels and the green man are a must.

for romance try now, voyager and brief encounter.

also anything powell and pressburger - my faves are the red shoes and a matter of life and death.

high society or the philadelphia story are gorgeous (one is a remake of the other)

the apartment and desk set for quirky american

if you like audrey hepburn, Sabrina and Roman Holiday

Kind Hearts and Coronets.

(Alec Guinness in multiple rolls. Seriously brilliant. )

LemonDrizzles · 15/02/2022 20:27

I seemed to remember enjoying it happened one night

whiteroseredrose · 15/02/2022 20:28

Kind Hearts and Coronets?

Metheven · 15/02/2022 20:29

A Matter of Life and Death is a classic.

I know Where I'm going is just gorgeous, Roger Livesey's voice is like velvet.

The Seventh Veil is one of my favourites, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Pimpernel Smith and The Scarlet Pimpernel is basically the same film set in different time periods. With the same lead actor, Leslie Howard.

Lover Come Back and Pillow Talk for a lovely bit of Doris Day/Rock Hudson.

Do you like musicals? Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, High Society, White Christmas, I could go on for hours!

Poshjock · 15/02/2022 20:29

Oh and Miracle on 34th Street - original 1947 B&W film. It's utterly charming. Another Christmas film.

I love a good old Christmas film me

DepthOfTheAbyss · 15/02/2022 20:29

I watched Gaslight after hearing that’s the film that the term gaslighting came from. I really enjoyed it.

Went The Day Well.

And I second all of the previous suggestions Grin

Riverlee · 15/02/2022 20:31

What sort of films do you like?

Mandy - old b/w film about deaf girl

Sister Kenny - about a nurse who helped paralysed children regain their mobility (based on real life)

St Trinians - original films (and more recent updates) (and has Alastair Sims in it)

Reach for the Sky - classic WWII film about Douglas Bader (also based on real life)

Dambusters - another WWII true story

Summer Holiday

sandgrown · 15/02/2022 20:32

Gone with the Wind

notthatonethisone · 15/02/2022 20:32

If you like the ladykillers try kind hearts and coronets

Peter sellers said he was emerald with envy when he saw Alex Guinness play more than one part

So when he was cast dr strangelove he said he wanted to do all the roles. Also a brilliant film and well worth checking out. It has my favourite line in it - gentlemen you can't fight in here. This is the war room

MMAMPWGHAP · 15/02/2022 20:33

I also recommend Ice Cold in Alex. One of my absolute favourites.

cortex10 · 15/02/2022 20:34

Mrs Miniver
Now Voyager

shangelawasrobbed · 15/02/2022 20:35

Goodbye Mr Chips is one of my favourites (the original, not the terrible Martin Clines remake).
