Recommend to me old films!

Watching Casablanca for the first time...I love old films but don't feel I've seen that many of them.

Can you please give me your recommendations?

Off the top of my head, ones I've loved in the past include The Ladykillers and pretty much anything with Alistair Simm!

Just thought of another. "The Heiress" starring Olivia De Havilland. Brilliant film with a fantastic ending.

Oh yes, I remember sitting in a darkened room (all the better to see the TV) with my female cousins, aunts, my mother and grandmother all bawling our eyes out watching this one!

I found a lot of old movies for sale on DVD in charity shops. 4 for £1 and some have just started charging a pound for 10! Plus they are happy to accept them back to resell when your done.

We took a box down to a care home with a spare dvd player and now the residents have twice weekly movie nights and weekend matinees.[/quote]
How lovely!

Some less well known films — ‘The Heiress’ starring Olivia DeHavilland

‘Jezebel’, Bette Davis

‘The Night of the Hunter’ Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters

‘They Were Sisters’ with Phylis Calvert

‘The Bad Seed’ — about a psychopathic child.

AuntMasha · 16/02/2022 16:33

Sorry, didn’t see the other posts mentioning’The Heiress’.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/02/2022 16:55

Can't have too many recommendations, AuntMasha.

Proper old-school weepy melodrama.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/02/2022 17:40

The Birds
The Time Machine
Rope
Vertigo
Westworld

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/02/2022 17:52

Depending on your definition of ‘old’ I also recommend Steven Spielberg’s 1971 directorial debut, Duel. The whole film is available on YouTube

Bridge Over The River Kwai

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Hobson's Choice is a wonderful film. I had to read the play for CSE English Lit (showing how old I am), surprisingly I enjoyed it, then saw the film years later.

MaitreKarlsson · 16/02/2022 18:17

Coming on to say 'Notorious'. It's the first film where I ever really 'got' Ingrid Bergman. She's playing against type as a bad girl with a complicated past. Plus Nazis and Cary Grant and exotic locations. The scene on the bench....

Also OP, many recommendations for Barefoot in the Park already - there are lots of great films on here but few that are so life-affirming and funny with such gorgeous stars!

And Psycho. Mainly the first half if I'm honest until Janet Leigh disappears.

The Audrey Hepburn film where she is blind is Charade.

Film club a great idea Smile

Goodbye Mr Chips

A580Hojas · 16/02/2022 20:08

Going to save this whole thread for recommendations!

I haven't read back so some of mine will no doubt already be on here but in terms of classic movies I really do recommend

North by Northwest
Rear Window
Dial M for Murder
West Side Story
Three Days of the Condor (1975 so pretty old)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 16/02/2022 20:15

The Audrey Hepburn film where she is blind is Charade

The blind one is "Wait until Dark".

Charade is an absolute classic where Audrey's eyesight is absolutely fine.

Nopetryagain · 16/02/2022 20:16

Philadelphia Story is one of my favourite movies of all time. Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and James Stewart- brilliant!!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 16/02/2022 20:23

The Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell

Most films with
Carole Lombard
Jean Harlow
Clark Gable

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/02/2022 20:23

@shangelawasrobbed

Goodbye Mr Chips is one of my favourites (the original, not the terrible Martin Clines remake).
I loved the MC remake! And yes, I’ve seen the original. MC is a brilliant actor IMO.
MaitreKarlsson · 16/02/2022 20:49

@StarbucksSmarterSister you're right! Blush

@A580Hojas Three Days of the Condor - another gem

Susu49 · 16/02/2022 21:24

This is fantastic- I've 200 films on my To Watch List Grin

I don't think anyone mentioned Laurence of Arabia but I haven't seen it since I was a little girl (when I was a bit disinterested) so I've added it on. And recommendations for 'any film with' or 'any of the _ films' get a placeholder entry each. Even if I watched 1 a week it would take me about 4 years to get through 😆

Starting tonight though! If anyone fancies joining me, I shall be watching Nosferatu on YouTube later Grin #MNFilmClub

'Double Indemnity' fabulous thriller.

Spudina · 16/02/2022 21:39

@StarbucksSmarterSister thanks I have been wracking my brain to think of that. I love it. (Much more than Breakfast at Tiffany’s)

Susu49 · 16/02/2022 21:39
