Recommend to me old films!

Watching Casablanca for the first time...I love old films but don't feel I've seen that many of them.

Can you please give me your recommendations?

Off the top of my head, ones I've loved in the past include The Ladykillers and pretty much anything with Alistair Simm!

Sunset Boulevard
Paper Moon

Metheven · 15/02/2022 20:38

Oh, The Ghost and Mrs Muir is good, too.

Topbird29 · 15/02/2022 20:38

The great race. Bit of a farce, and best custard pie fight ever.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/02/2022 20:39

Second all those mentioned so far, plus
The Mouse That Roared
Miranda
The Ghost and Mrs Muir

Poshjock · 15/02/2022 20:41

I only saw The Ghost and Mrs Muir very recently as it's my best friend's favourite old film. I loved it. Funny and charming.

kennelmaid · 15/02/2022 20:42

All About Eve - Bette Davis, George Sanders, Anne Bancroft and Thelma Ritter. Truly brilliant dialogue, won loads of Oscars.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 15/02/2022 20:43

Twelve Angry Men

Susu49 · 15/02/2022 20:43

Oh wow, lots to check out so far!

I've seen a few - love the old St Trin films, Some Like it Hot, Roman Holiday etc but I'm making a list of the rest. And it sounds like Kind Hearts & Coronets and Ice Cold will have to be at the top :)

Please keep them coming!

I was coming on to say Casablanca 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. It's the one film I've rewatched many times.

@Metheven

A Matter of Life and Death is a classic.

I know Where I'm going is just gorgeous, Roger Livesey's voice is like velvet.

The Seventh Veil is one of my favourites, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Pimpernel Smith and The Scarlet Pimpernel is basically the same film set in different time periods. With the same lead actor, Leslie Howard.

Lover Come Back and Pillow Talk for a lovely bit of Doris Day/Rock Hudson.

Do you like musicals? Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, High Society, White Christmas, I could go on for hours!

We'd get on, @Metheven! I adore I Know Where I'm Going. Roger Livesey is an overlooked genius. Anything by Powell and Pressburger is good.

I also love The Seventh Veil. I have a thing for James Mason.

Talking of whom - you can't really go wrong with Alfred Hitchcock. North by Northwest (starrring the aforesaid James Mason with Cary Grant and Eva Ste Marie) is wonderful. So many others too. Rebecca, just for starters.

All-time classics not mentioned above (haven't read the whole thread yet): 12 Angry Men, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Third Man*

Musicals: Oklahoma, Oliver!, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins.

Film noir: The Maltese Falcon, Laura, Double Indemnity.

*If you only watch one from this list, make it this one.

HelenaJustina · 15/02/2022 20:58

Dial M for Murder
Rear Window
Top Hat
Brief Encounter

Love Casablanca so much, it’s my DMum’s favourite.

mejon · 15/02/2022 20:59

Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill Mob are great if you've enjoyed The Ladykillers (my favourite film).

Another fab one with both Alistair Sim and Margareth Rutherford is Happiest Days of Your Life - St.Trinians-esque and a hoot to boot!
The Titfield Thunderbolt
Mr Blandings Builds his Dreamhouse with Cary Grant
North by Northwest
I'm Alright Jack
Two Way Stretch
The Wrong Arm of the Law
Heaven's Above... bit of a Peter Sellers theme going on here... the Pink Panther movies are a must too
The Rebel with Tony Hancock

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2022 21:00

@StCharlotte

Went The Day Well.

And I second all of the previous suggestions Grin

I don't know how many times I've seen this film. Pops up regularly on Film4. Wonderful. Written by Graham Greene. Makes me cry every single time.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2022 21:03

@shangelawasrobbed

Goodbye Mr Chips is one of my favourites (the original, not the terrible Martin Clines remake).
Robert Donat is so wonderful. I'm a wreck after watching the original Goodbye Mr Chips. He's also in the original 39 Steps, which is better for my money than any of the remakes.
DepthOfTheAbyss · 15/02/2022 21:06

These look great. Someone needs to set up a Mumsnet film club Smile

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2022 21:07

@notthatonethisone

If you like the ladykillers try kind hearts and coronets

Peter sellers said he was emerald with envy when he saw Alex Guinness play more than one part

So when he was cast dr strangelove he said he wanted to do all the roles. Also a brilliant film and well worth checking out. It has my favourite line in it - gentlemen you can't fight in here. This is the war room

Second all of this!

Coming forward a bit, there were some cracking films in the 1970s and very late 1960s.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Sting
The French Connection
The Conversation
Taxi Driver
Chinatown
Apocalypse Now

And my absolute favourites: The Godfather and The Godfather Part II.
