Watching Casablanca for the first time...I love old films but don't feel I've seen that many of them.

Can you please give me your recommendations?

Off the top of my head, ones I've loved in the past include The Ladykillers and pretty much anything with Alistair Simm!

The 39 Steps with the glorious Robert Donat. A wonderful film for a weekend afternoon with the teapot and the toaster. In fact, I might just pencil that in for tomorrow...

Thanks, Bore! That may be our evening sorted. I adore that film.

Noir - Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, Laura. I see the Wikipedia article on film noir says The Maltese Falcon qualifies. Also mentions Out of the Past, with Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer, which I have seen, but can remember little about. Robert Mitchum is marvellous, so may seek that out to refresh my memory. Touch of Evil, an Orson Welles masterpiece.

Oh good call. I adore that film, and RD is so suave.

Thanks Gasp0de I'll take a look at that. Not watched 39 Steps in years, agree it's a complete classic.

A real treat this afternoon:
Brief Encounter BBC2 3pm

Ooooooh! Glorious. I've no idea how many times I've seen that one.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/02/2022 13:21

I just love the clipped accents!
Of course, it's been endlessly parodied (Victoria Wood, The Archers) but it's deservedly a classic and I love it Smile

  • You're veyy engry, aren't you?
  • Not engry, Elec. Disappointed.

This bit of dialogue pops up frequently chez Gasp!

  1. Angels with dirty faces (James Cagney) neighbourhood kids hanging out with local gangster.
  2. Mandy. Little girl who is deaf.
  3. Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) Woman doing all she can to pander to her spoilt daughter.
  4. Sleepers (Not as old as the others but seems older) loosely based on a true story. Excellent film. (2) has always made me cry)
