Watching Casablanca for the first time...I love old films but don't feel I've seen that many of them.

Can you please give me your recommendations?

Off the top of my head, ones I've loved in the past include The Ladykillers and pretty much anything with Alistair Simm!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I totally agree, Roger Livesey should have been a huge, huge star. Oh yes to a thing for James Mason, have you seen him in The Wicked Lady? Again, the voice.

I love My Fair Lady and The Bridges if Madison County

ClariceQuiff · 15/02/2022 21:13

Coming forward a bit, there were some cracking films in the 1970s

The Wicker Man is a fantastic film from the early 70s. Look for 'The Director's Cut' or 'The Final Cut' because the original theatrical release had some of the best bits cut.

Do not confuse it with the dreadful 2006 remake starring Nicolas Cage!

The Franchise Affair
Bunny Lake is Missing
Woman in a Dressing Gown

notthatonethisone · 15/02/2022 21:16

Oh I'm going to Chuck in a few more!

School for scoundrels if you like Alistair sim. Terry Thomas is brilliant in it...

And the smallest show on earth. Peter sellers and Margaret Rutherford. A young couple inherit a decrepit old cinema and its three ancient staff and try to get it going again...

niki26 · 15/02/2022 21:16

I came on to say 12 Angry Men but someone beat me to it!

The Apartment. Also agree with Roman Holiday.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2022 21:18

High Noon. Fantastic film. Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. Both on top form. Excellent music.

Great piece of hokum: Where Eagles Dare. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

Frankly, any early film with Clint Eastwood. Play Misty for Me terrified me when I first saw it. The Outlaw Josey Wales is atmospheric.

catlovingdoctor · 15/02/2022 21:19

The man who came to dinner- from the 40s and in black and white but so funny!

Also, for a noir thriller, Footsteps in the fog...one of my favourites

Joxster · 15/02/2022 21:22

@DickVanDyke26

I like Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.
I came on to recommend this! Love this movie.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/02/2022 21:24

The Odd Couple. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.

Also, very different role for Walter Matthau - The Taking of Pelham 123. Better than the remake (as so often).

Dog Day Afternoon. Al Pacino and John Cazale. Interesting heist/hostage taking movie in early 1970s New York.
