Daily Haiku

Hello!

Anyone else fancy a thread where we write and share a haiku daily?

I used to write a lot of haikus. I find they're a good mindfulness exercise 🙂

I've just started writing them again about my baby son but will try to branch out into other topics.

Here is one from last night. Distracting the boy with a toy boat while putting him in pajamas (he's a wriggler). Title in bold.

Tug Boat
A toy boat sailing
The blue ocean of your sheets
Night night tiny boy

Too far from the kerb,
Hill start, bright sun, busy road
And smug men smirking.

MrsWooster · 31/01/2022 12:36

DD has covid.
Is it wrong to be so pleased
To have her at home?

Rogue1001MNer · 31/01/2022 12:58

sighs another mon
Day morning begins. Half term
Just around corner

Aw @MrsWooster how old is your daughter?

@weemouse what's 'coorie'? I used to live in Sutherland and Argyll, loved hearing Scottish words although took a while for my English ears to work them out sometimes 🙂don't think I came across coorie. Er I'm assuming it's Scottish apologies if I'm wrong!

@NotInMyFrontGardenYouDont bloody smug men. What do they know, anyway?

MsNorth · 31/01/2022 13:08

Lovely@weemouse!

Honourofgrayskull · 31/01/2022 13:09

I've never heard of Haiku but I think I get the idea!

It's raining again
But the fires lit and cosy
Snuggle up with tea.

Have I got it right? Such a lovely thread.

ChocolateButtonsOfShame · 31/01/2022 15:56

@Honourofgrayskull yes you've got it 🙂 evocative.

I was thinking, I will post an example of a published haiku every day too. But I'll start tomorrow.

I went to a mini zoo place this morning. The gibbon was cheerful, but I wasn't so sure about the birds of prey. And the flamingoes looked pretty odd against the drab Cumbrian backdrop.

The Hawk
Late January sun
The hawk tethered to a stump
Dreaming of mountains

Building myself up
To put the recycling out
On the path outside.

It’s too cold by far
To put the recycling out
I’d rather stay in.

Pascha · 31/01/2022 16:06

Just changed dental check
For kids as isolating
April! Bloody hell!!

iklboo · 31/01/2022 16:57

It's too bloody cold
I'm not going out tonight
Stay in with the cats

NancyDrawed · 31/01/2022 17:14

My kids caught Covid
Always told them they should share
So they did - thanks boys!

SpicyTinkle · 31/01/2022 17:24

Boris is a cunt!
Why isn't he resigning?
I feel full of rage.

ChocolateButtonsOfShame · 31/01/2022 18:49

@SpicyTinkle a haiku for the nation

OP posts:
MsNorth · 31/01/2022 19:06

@SpicyTinkle yes!
You are absolutely right
Surely he must go

Peachandpearl · 31/01/2022 19:49

Can't decide what to
Watch on the television
On mumsnet instead

Toddler eating cheese
The greatest ever joy, yes
But no sharing, no

Need to do laundry
Or maybe just check what's clean?
Not doing either

Not doing so well
Feel worried, stressed, tired
Life is relentless

Child playing iPad
Time to come off now, sorry
'Please, five more minutes'

Five minutes later
Really, its time to come off
'You are so mean, Mum'

PsychoSyd · 31/01/2022 22:04

In honour of the upcoming cherry blossom season in Japan:

Cherry scents the air
Fallen blossoms cloak the ground
Crushed blooms like my heart

NotInMyFrontGardenYouDont · 31/01/2022 22:12

Loving all your brilliant haikus 👏👏

Pillow spray, wool socks,
Soothing valerian tea,
Hope swift sleep follows...

weemouse · 01/02/2022 08:06

ChocolateButtonsOfShame

to "coorie" means to snuggle in/cuddle in. It is a Scottish word - I love it. I've always said that to my boy, come and have a coorie, and he knows that's a safe, warm place in my arms.

Can be said as "coorie doon wi' me" which is snuggle down with me - lovely Smile

MrsWooster · 01/02/2022 08:13

Today I am tired.
The sky feels low and heavy
But this too will pass.

Giggorata · 01/02/2022 08:27

Today I will dig
A large hole in claggy clay
For the cherry tree

ChocolateButtonsOfShame · 01/02/2022 08:29

@weemouse ah that's lovely! How old is your son? Mine is 6 months. Still a very little guy.

@MsNorth 👏

@Peachandpearl is prolific. I'm looking forward to today's edition 😊

@PsychoSyd I like the juxtaposition 🙂

Really enjoying reading all of these, thank you!

Today's published haiku, a classic:

Autumn moonlight-
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.

Matsuo Basho (17th C)

Ironically (or not) it is actually National Haiku writing month in February!

I'm doing some daily prompts for Haiku this month and today's is through a window

Frosted wide panes frame
Curling round a courtyard
Withered in winter.

FawnDrench · 01/02/2022 08:36

Chinese New Year starts
today - year of the tiger -
chicken chow mein tea.

rifling · 01/02/2022 08:38

Can I join you all?
A month of haikus stretch out
Like a pleasant view

Rogue1001MNer · 01/02/2022 09:28

All is as normal
I smile. But his death was ten
Years ago today
