Can you burp?

Odd question I know! Following on from a conversation with my partner he thinks it’s really odd that I can’t burp. I am pretty sure I’ve heard people before saying they can’t either but his made me wonder if I’m just an odd ball that isn’t able to perform a natural bodily action.
I used to be able to when I was a kid but I think after I was really ill once I’ve now got this block where I just can’t burp!
So... can you burp? 😂

No!! I also think mine might be due to a mental block which I just can't get over.

Fifipop185 · 25/01/2022 19:00

Nope! Everyone else in my house can (and often does) but I can't. My burps seem to die a weird gurgling death in my throat. Can't say it's held me back in life but...I'm the odd one out. Grin

Turniptracker · 25/01/2022 19:07

This was me!! And then sometime in my twenties I just suddenly burped at the dinner table from out of nowhere and now I burp all the time (it's not ideal but my god it reduces the number of stomach aches I suffer from)

Yes, massive ones especially after drinking dandelion and burdock. I think that's the reason my DM stopped buying it when I was a child. My niece, to her chagrin can't and thinks I'm an awful Auntie that I can 😂

TiffanyIceberg · 25/01/2022 19:43

I can burp the alphabet Grin adult son can't burp, very strange.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 25/01/2022 19:44

No. I had surgery on my stomach and oesophagus about 8.5 years ago and haven't been able to since.

Boood · 25/01/2022 19:45

I couldn’t until about ten years ago. I don’t know what changed 😂

EsmeraldaandTeenytiny · 25/01/2022 19:46

I can’t burp either! I’ve burped maybe 3 times in my life that I can remember.

Suzi888 · 25/01/2022 19:46

Nope! Can’t say I feel like I’m missing out to be honest.

lalaloopyhead · 25/01/2022 19:47

I would say no, as I have only done a proper burp a handful of times in my life and they have been pretty tame ....all my excess air seems to escape as gurgles and croaks...so unsatisfying!

PiggyPlumPie · 25/01/2022 19:48

Couldn't burp at all until I had children. Now I can't stop!

Amberheartkitty · 25/01/2022 19:49

I can’t burp. Neither can my daughter.

NewYearEveryYear · 25/01/2022 19:49

I burp about once a year and it's always a surprise, and always a cause of jubilation!

There's a who subreddit #noburp for people like us!

TeaStory · 25/01/2022 19:50

Nope, not at all. I thought I was alone in my freakishness until I read this: amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/jul/03/bloating-pain-gurgles-read-this-if-you-cant-burp

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/01/2022 19:53

No I can't. My mum and dd can't either.

ShowOfHands · 25/01/2022 19:54

No. Never have. I don't understand how to do it even

FrenchyQ · 25/01/2022 19:55

I can't burp either, never have.

ShowOfHands · 25/01/2022 19:56

Just read the article above and thought I should point out that for me, it's not an issue. I don't get bloated or have indigestion. I don't see not burping as an issue.

We used to call it dandelion and burpdock when I was a kid :)

You are not alone - this podcast which is nominally about the tiktok algorithm has a whole story about it! gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/z3h78d6

XenoBitch · 25/01/2022 20:04

Nope! I think I have burped about 4 times in my life and it took me by surprise every time. My mum doesn't burp either.

LubaLuca · 25/01/2022 20:13

I didn't know it was possible to not be able to burp, how interesting! For those who can't, do you fart a lot instead?

GCITC · 25/01/2022 20:14

I couldn't until I had my tonsils removed. Being able to burp is great feeling!

Lea1437 · 25/01/2022 20:16

Same here. Massive burp in mid twenties and been able to do them since.
RedCandyApple · 25/01/2022 20:16
