Can you burp?

Odd question I know! Following on from a conversation with my partner he thinks it’s really odd that I can’t burp. I am pretty sure I’ve heard people before saying they can’t either but his made me wonder if I’m just an odd ball that isn’t able to perform a natural bodily action.
I used to be able to when I was a kid but I think after I was really ill once I’ve now got this block where I just can’t burp!
So... can you burp? 😂

@amusedbush I want to be your friend Grin

I can't burp either. Get those annoying throat gurgles though. Just read the article posted above and while I don't get heartburn or indigestion I do suffer from painful hiccups.

Nope, I can't burp. It's happened a handful of times in my life, completely by surpeise

Do you deflate completely when this occurs?
FindingMeno · 26/01/2022 20:50

@TheOrigRights eek!
Not happened yet but I'd hate to assume it never would Shock

worcestersauce29 · 26/01/2022 20:59

Like some others I think that my inability to burp was due being told it was 'rude' from a very early age; I so wanted to be able to burp to stop the discomfort but I just couldn't do it! Fast forward to November 2020 when I was poorly with COVID-19, my long lasting side effect is that I can now burp. Mad but true

VetOnCall · 26/01/2022 21:32

I can't burp either, never have been able to. A few times if I've gulped a fizzy drink really quickly I've done a kind of quiet quasi burp-ish type thing but not a proper loud burp like other people do.

TwinkleToeMatilda · 26/01/2022 22:14

@amusedbush I love it 😂
@FindingMeno that’s a pure talent I am actually proud.

That's impressive! I've only sneezed and farted before, I call that "taking a screenshot" Grin

I can't burp! Every now and then one pops up but it's never on purpose.

I haven't RTFT but does anybody else get gurgles in their throat? Sometimes it's like little bubbles, sometimes like one big one. They're really, really annoying and can be loud! Especially bad after a fizzy drink or alcohol. It took me years to realise that I can't burp and it's probably related to that. It was horrendous when I was pregnant with DD, then even worse with DS. The only way I can get it to stop slightly is by laying on my left side. Unfortunately that can trigger my heartburn (mostly when I was pregnant but it can happen after meals, too)...

I hate it! I get really uncomfortable hiccups as well, and I'm sure it's all linked.

The only time I burp is when I'm going to be sick.

I know this is a few months old, but I can quite easily. I can belch quite loudly on command and was notorious for doing it as a party trick in secondary school and university. It got me in trouble with the head teachers more than a few times.

Vampirethriller · 24/03/2022 17:36

I never burped until I was about six months pregnant for the first time, then for some reason I've hardly stopped! (Large one whilst writing thisBlush)

CherryPeach675 · 24/03/2022 19:16

@TiffanyIceberg

I can burp the alphabet Grin adult son can't burp, very strange.
Me too. I was especially proud of this as a child. No one can out-burp me... Grin
Sn0tnose · 24/03/2022 20:43

But it baffles me how people burp on command. Couldn't even work out how you go about it, it's like me being told to just sneeze. You can't do a real sneeze as you fancy.

One of the boys on my estate taught me how to do this when I was nine. I was so proud of myself. (Strangely, my DM was not so impressed). You need to swallow a big gulp of air, as though it were water.

MoreHolidays · 25/03/2022 17:13

Funnily enough, even though I can (and do) belch quite loudly neither my husband or my son do. It's not that they can't burp, they just refuse to because they're too polite.

Did your DM try to make you stop?
Bambooshoot · 27/03/2022 17:07

I can’t burp or vomit - I’ve been through many viruses and a pregnancy without anything resurfacing in spite of the queasiness. I thought it was just my bad luck and my body’s insistence on holding onto every last calorie!!

I once read a Thomas Hardy novel where there was a herd of sheep that I think had eaten clover which gave them serous gas issues in their stomach/intestines and the shepherd had a special tool that was like a small hollow needle that could let the air out to deflate them without causing any harm. I would love one of those . . .
