Can you burp?

Odd question I know! Following on from a conversation with my partner he thinks it’s really odd that I can’t burp. I am pretty sure I’ve heard people before saying they can’t either but his made me wonder if I’m just an odd ball that isn’t able to perform a natural bodily action.
I used to be able to when I was a kid but I think after I was really ill once I’ve now got this block where I just can’t burp!
So... can you burp? 😂

My people! I do a tiny inward burp once a year, always surprises me.

Borgonzola · 25/01/2022 21:10

Nope. Head over to Reddit - r/noburp - for a whole worldwide community of us!

MrsGHarrison87 · 25/01/2022 21:15

No I can't burp, I just seem to swallow the gas back down. I get hiccups quite a lot though. I don't get how people can force burps, I don't even get them by accident.

I had no idea others couldn't either! Thought I was a freak all these years. Although after kids and a hiatal hernia I can now report that I'm making up for all those lost burps and it is definitely not a good thing.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/01/2022 21:29

I can't, I've never been able to.

I don't drink quickly though, I sip.

I've burped once in my life but I was ill and about to vomit so it was more of a retch!

itwasntaparty · 25/01/2022 21:32

I can burp the alphabet. Haven't tried it for a good few years though.

emwithme · 25/01/2022 21:37

I can now but couldn't until my late 20s.

My 3 year old DD appears to take after her Dad and can already burp on demand

SwimmingOnEggshells · 25/01/2022 21:38

Another non-burper here. About one a year might pop out by accident but that's it. I suffer quite badly from indigestion and reflux which I think is related.

I recently found out a cousin of mine also can't burp and I wonder is it hereditary? My dad had oesophageal cancer and I hope there's no connection there.

Themadcatparade · 25/01/2022 21:46

Wtf. Why can't you all burp?!!

Themadcatparade · 25/01/2022 21:47

Honestly I didn't realise people couldn't burp this had stunned me 😂

Moonshine160 · 25/01/2022 21:51

Nope, can’t burp. And I have Emetophobia (fear of being sick), not sure if it’s related.

Dilbertian · 25/01/2022 21:54

I couldn't, until I had babies. Before, all that would happen was a sort of soupy bubbling noise that relieved a bit of the pressure in my stomach. But being pregnant weakened my stomach sphincter more with each pregnancy. I now burp frequently, usually just a little unladylike pop, but anything fizzy will cause me to bring forth earth-shaking raspers.

Still can't do them on demand, though.

TroysMammy · 25/01/2022 21:55

@TwinkleToeMatilda after drinking pop hold your nose and jiggle up and down. I was crying laughing when my then husband did this to burp after Dandelion and Burdock pop Grin

KateTheEighth · 25/01/2022 21:57

🤣🤣🤣

Mmmmdanone · 25/01/2022 22:03

I couldn't until I had my first baby. Must have released something and now I burp lots. I love it 🤣
That baby is now 17 and she can't burp!

PivotPivotPivottt · 25/01/2022 22:06

Forgot to say I can force my croaks and it does relieve discomfort. But I don't understand why the burp doesn't come out my mouth it goes through my chest and stops in my throat. Where does it go? 😂

noblegreenk · 25/01/2022 22:09

I burp maybe 2-3 times a year and theyre only little ones. It causes me a lot of discomfort at times.

MBM18 · 25/01/2022 22:14

Same here! I hate the throat gurgles, they can be so embarrassing.
I only burp before I vomit Confused

Wednesdayafternoon · 25/01/2022 22:15

I think I've burped about twice in my life and I'm 31 🙈

TwinkleToeMatilda · 25/01/2022 22:16

Yes I get the throat gurgles too! They can be quite loud which can be awkward haha
