Can you burp?

Odd question I know! Following on from a conversation with my partner he thinks it’s really odd that I can’t burp. I am pretty sure I’ve heard people before saying they can’t either but his made me wonder if I’m just an odd ball that isn’t able to perform a natural bodily action.
I used to be able to when I was a kid but I think after I was really ill once I’ve now got this block where I just can’t burp!
So... can you burp? 😂

Nope!

gggrrrargh · 25/01/2022 22:30

I had no idea people couldn’t burp!

DaisyTheUnicorn · 25/01/2022 22:32

Me neither! Isn't it bad for you not to be able to? Can people "learn" or just not do it?

R CPD 🤯 I can't believe it's actually a medical condition!

mrsfollowill · 25/01/2022 22:41

Well I'm stunned- did not realise some people could not burp! I don't do it a lot but I can only imagine the build up of gas must be so uncomfortable. I don't fart much though Grin and can hold it in from both ends for an appropriate moment!

NotsoNeurotypical · 25/01/2022 22:47

I can burp but not on purpose. It kind of just comes out like when you open a can of fizzy pop. More like a hiss than a burp really. Very occasionally if I've eaten a lot it will come out more loudly like a proper burp. But I can't make myself do it and I can't burp the alphabet or anything, it's only ever involuntary like hiccoughs

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 25/01/2022 22:48

Yes

TwinkleToeMatilda · 25/01/2022 22:53

Haha I just read that article and said to my partner I have eructile dysfunction. He was rather confused!

Polkadotties · 25/01/2022 23:03

If I drink a lot of alcohol with bubbles I get really bad hiccups. The only way of getting rid of them is to make myself sick except that I don’t actually throw up but it releases a load of air, almost like a massive burp. Then the hiccups go.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 25/01/2022 23:07

Wow there's a treatment for it!

(Anyone else burping more while reading this.. )

I've never been able to.

DH can burp like a pondful of natterjack toads. I get quite jealous of his prowess.

dalmatianmad · 26/01/2022 01:59

I've never burped, I'm 45.

I make a weird little gurgling noise in my throat.

Furries · 26/01/2022 02:48

Blimey, I never knew that this was a “thing”. I can burp on command - my friends kids think it’s funny 😂

Agadorsparticus · 26/01/2022 03:01

A can of coke guarantees it.

Tee20x · 26/01/2022 03:18

Mine was the other way around - I never used to be able to but can now!

Inthetropics · 26/01/2022 03:24

I've never burped in my life. It is a major source of discomfort for me. I really wish i could. It seems like it would be relieving to burp in a few situations.

TheOrigRights · 26/01/2022 04:55

I don't think I burp involuntarily, I just gulp down air and burp away. I can say whole sentences or work on a massive belch. I am otherwise a very well behaved person.

TwinkleToeMatilda · 26/01/2022 12:32

It’s really interesting to see so many people can’t burp. It’s not as unusual as I thought! I just opened a can of coke took a big gulp and... nothing. Maybe i was just meant not to burp?!

Disastermagnet27 · 26/01/2022 12:47

Not on purpose, no but I do involuntarily sometimes.
Both my sons have been able to since about 18 months! They have burping contests sometimes to see who can do the biggest one!!! Boys!!!Grin

amusedbush · 26/01/2022 13:04

This is so funny to read, I didn't know people couldn't burp! I have to avoid fizzy drinks when I'm around other people because a single mouthful will come back up as a burp seconds later.

Weirdly, I refuse to fart in front of DH even after 10 years together but I will happily burp so loudly it parts his hair. Sometimes I do it upstairs and I hear a quiet "for fuck's sake" from downstairs Blush

spacefrog35 · 26/01/2022 13:12

Oh my goodness - I've found my people! I thought I was the only freak in the world that didn't know how to burp Blush Grin

TwinkleToeMatilda · 26/01/2022 13:13

@amusedbush haha your post made me laugh 😂

I left out the most childish part. Sometimes after I do a particularly loud and impressive burp, I say "...proclaimed the king!"

I'm 31 years old Blush
