Can you burp?

Odd question I know! Following on from a conversation with my partner he thinks it’s really odd that I can’t burp. I am pretty sure I’ve heard people before saying they can’t either but his made me wonder if I’m just an odd ball that isn’t able to perform a natural bodily action.
I used to be able to when I was a kid but I think after I was really ill once I’ve now got this block where I just can’t burp!
So... can you burp? 😂

I wish I could, the gurgling is embarrassing and the trapped wind is painful.

BlueBeeSpots · 25/01/2022 20:22

I never knew that some people couldn’t burp! You really do learn something new everyday

girlabouthome · 25/01/2022 20:23

I can't either!

Oh yes. Massive rumbling growlers.

TinaYouFatLard · 25/01/2022 20:25

I can’t burp and never have been able to. I could chug a can of coke and nothing! I do have an extra grumbly tummy though!

ShowOfHands · 25/01/2022 20:26

@LubaLuca

I didn't know it was possible to not be able to burp, how interesting! For those who can't, do you fart a lot instead?
Nope not really. A normal amount I suspect.

But I wonder if I don't burp because I don't need to iyswim. I've never had heartburn outside of late pregnancy and I don't get bloated or uncomfortable. I also don't drink fizzy drinks or alcohol which seem to cause it in a lot of people.

daisychainsandrainbows · 25/01/2022 20:29

On the other end of the spectrum, during pregnancy I began burping all day bloody long. I counted one day and hit 130+ burps. Clearly taking it for the team for all you non-burpers!

ReadySteadyTwins · 25/01/2022 20:31

If I down fizzy drinks at an alarming rate, I will burp, once, at a Brian Blessed level. But my body does this. And I either choose to "let it out" or stop it, depending on if anyone's around!

But it baffles me how people burp on command. Couldn't even work out how you go about it, it's like me being told to just sneeze. You can't do a real sneeze as you fancy.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/01/2022 20:33

@LubaLuca yes I do. Blush

AcceptYourself · 25/01/2022 20:35

Nope I can't either!!!!

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 25/01/2022 20:36

You all must drop farts like sonic booms.

LaMadrilena · 25/01/2022 20:37

My husband can't! Apparently he could when he was a baby, and then just... stopped. It can actually make him quite uncomfortable as obviously he has to wait for any gases to work their way through to the other end.

Purpleseaside · 25/01/2022 20:40

I couldn't burp for years and then when I turned 21 I started burping and haven't been able to stop since Grin.

I used to suffer very badly with trapped wind, bent over in agony, but since being able to burp its almost stopped it completely. My father can't burp and suffers with trapped wind, I think it's in the family.

ApocalypseNowt · 25/01/2022 20:40

I can burp on purpose crap boast alert

iklboo · 25/01/2022 20:41

Not on cue, no. I can vomit you order though (not a particularly great or on demand life skill, but I did get the odd afternoon off school).

girafferafferaffe · 25/01/2022 20:41

I can't at all!

auldmaw · 25/01/2022 20:43

I thought I was the only one! I never burp and can't imagine how people make themselves do it without accidentally vomiting (as in, I don't understand the physiology of that!)
If I drink fizzy juice I just get hiccups

NoLongerTroels · 25/01/2022 20:44

Ds2 couldn't burp. Never did even when a tiny baby. He'd fart like a trooper but wind never came up.

StrawberrySanta · 25/01/2022 20:45

Some people can't burp?!? I can burp on command if I want to 😂

FidoRido · 25/01/2022 20:46

I can’t either! It’s so annoying - like PP I get so much pain and discomfort instead. Indigestion, trapped wind, painful hiccups, bloating. I would love to be a burper.

The only time I was able to burp was when pregnant. No idea why! I have burped once or twice since being pregnant but hardly ever. It baffles me why I can’t do it.

Polkadotties · 25/01/2022 20:50

Neither me or my sister can burp. We accuse my mum of not winding us properly as babies 😂

Betsyboo87 · 25/01/2022 20:54

Funnily enough DH and I had this conversation a couple of nights ago. I couldn’t until I was pregnant which always fascinated DH. When I was pregnant everything made me burp and I still do sometimes. However I can’t do it on demand at all. I get that horrible gargling noise too.

rifling · 25/01/2022 20:56

No, have burped involuntarily maybe 8 times in my life. Can't do it on demand.

germsandcoffee · 25/01/2022 20:59

Yep I'm like a female Barney Gumble

TwinkleToeMatilda · 25/01/2022 21:03

I am so glad I am not alone! Must also say I don’t suffer with bloating or trapped wind either. It’s odd though, I can drink a can of coke and get that sensation that I would burp (if I could) but it just doesn’t happen and it doesn’t affect me either. How odd!
